Why aren't more movies based on video
games?
By PiYoNugget
Some video games would make for a great movie.
The plots are already there, and the only thing that would be
needed is some good acting and special effects. Why aren't more
movies based on video games, it appears that plenty of movies
are based off books. Which seems to do just well, if books do
well why not video games?
Well, they have tried. I am reminded of Super Mario brothers
the movie. However, that is not a good example. If they are
going to make a movie on a game, they need to stick to the same
plotline. Not totally, change it, which then alienates the audience,
which made the game so popular in the first place. In the movie,
there was this whole thing about two different worlds, and this
rock. None of that was in the game. Kind Koopa was a guy with
slicked back hair, and the princess was just some girl.
In addition, when they do make a movie based off a game they
only choose horrible games. Tomb Raider is horrible game, she
runs around shooting dead things with massive amounts of firepower.
"That pisses me off," says Wedge 55.
Wedge brought up a good point; most games would require a trilogy
of movies to explain the whole game. What's wrong with that?
If the movies are good, I have no problem with them making three
of them. Hell there was five, and yes, I said five Rocky movies.
So there would be no problem with making a trilogy as long as
they do not make the movie a piece of crap. This would not be
hard if they follow the games actual plot.
Many games exist that would be great movies. Imagine Zelda
the movie, they could make five Zelda movies. Two Zelda games
were on Nintendo, one for Super Nintendo, One for 64 and the
1 for Game Cube. Imagine five Zelda movies. It would be glorious.
Hell there is six star wars movies. Five of which suck, why
then can't they make five Zelda movies, all of which have a general
plot idea, and only need the writers and actors to fill it in.
Alternatively, why not make a GTA movie, now that would be great,
and I am not saying this because I am a huge GTA freak, Which
I am. Nevertheless, think about what a movie it would make.
Wedge 55 makes the point that Starcraft would make one of the
best movie trilogies ever. The movie would be the Human campaign,
the first Protoss and Zerg campaigns would compose of the second,
and brood war would be the third movie, boom instant trilogy.
Especially since most of the lines are already written. In
addition, the Diablo series would make good movies. Take out
some of the superfluous dungeon crawl for the first, and add
more talking for the second and the xpack, and we have another
Trilogy.
Video games make great movie plots and story lines. If you think
about video games in many ways are already movies. Its animation,
and its on the computer or television screen. Since the Diablo
game series already has a book line, and Starcraft and Warcraft
getting one, I hope that it is only a short matter of time before
the big movie studios realize the previous failures, suck it
up, and this time actually follow the plot, and make some bad
ass movies.
