This site is ment to be informative and has been put together with the co-operation of many miniature dwarf horse owners.

Not so many years ago miniature breeders hid the fact that they ever had a dwarf horse.  Sometimes they were euthenizied with out having been given a chance.

Reputable breeders now are taking responsability for any dwarfs there farm may produce.
Intentional breeding for a dwarf miniature horse should not be done. Even a minimal dwarf should not be used in a breeding program.

If a breeder has produced a dwarf miniature horse most breeders will avoid breeding the same mare and stallion, so as not to repeat the possiability of a dwarf miniature horse.

Dwarfism in miniature horses can range from minimal to severe.  Dwarfs should never be use for breeding or selling.  No matter how minor the dwarfism.

Pixies Story
Pixie was given to Betheny by a breeder who cared.  She new Pixie would have a good home with us.

Pixie is the fourth and last foal from the same dam and sire.  She was the only mare.   Two of her brothers were gelded and never produced any foals.  One brother was sold and used as a stallion and produced dwarfs.  Her brothers also had excellant confirmation and show records.  The temperment was good with all four foals.

When Pixie was born you could tell immediately that she was a dwarf miniature horse.  She could not stand up to nurse.  Her legs were braced immediately.  Her teeth came in, and a equine dentist recommended she go to Michigan State University for dental work to help as she matured.  As with many procedures in a dwarf they need to be at a medical center rather then the vet coming to the barn, because of anesthetic use can be dangerous and life threatning.

For the protection of a dwarf they can not go in pastures with other miniature horses if they are as severe as Pixie.  We solved this with a pasture next to the miniatures and arabian.  We use multiple pastures with each breed of horse and Pixie having there own pasture.  They are all able to communicate through the fence.
She is allowed to be a horse.
We didn't ask for a life this way
And you didn't ask for it either
So we try to put our heads together
And decide to make things easier

We do our best to love you
And show off for you in our own way
We try not to make you worry
So we just love you more and more each day

We don't like to bother you
We don't like to cost you extra time
We appreciate all the things you do for us
to help us feel just fine

The extra smile you have for us
The extra kindness that shows
We do so try to return it
In our hearts it glows

So while we have a little time with you
We try so hard to be good
Trying to act like a normal horse
just the way we should

And when it's time to leave you
when we no longer share a smile
don't be sad or mad or hurt
you made our life worthwhile

You see there was a special plan
That you were picked out to own us
God wouldn't have sent us to just anyone
He knew with you He could trust

Be happy for us little ones
that people like you are near
Don't mourn our tiny lives or have any regrets
Celebrate the time that we had here

Dwarfs have the most lovable, sweet personalities that I've ever encountered & they make the BEST pets arounds. They ARE "high maintenence tho, and most require extra hoof trimmings, dental work, and attention to other health problems they may have. Anyone who is contemplating buying a Dwarf for a pet, should very seriously consider everything that will be involved before doing so. Extra work, extra expense...etc. (and possible heartache down the road!) These "little Luvs" deserve the best homes possible where people are willing & able to provide, not only the love...but all the necessary attention to their health problems.
