Self Mutilation |
Self mutilation (self harm, self abuse) can be defined as the attempt to delibritley cause harm to one's body. |
There are three forms of self mutilation: |
Major self mutilation- the rarest and most extreme form. This form usually results in permanant disfigurement, (limb amputation) |
Stereo typic self mutilation- This form of mutilation usually consists biting, eyeball pressing, and head banging. |
Superficial self mutilation- This is the most common form of self mutilation. This form consists of cutting, burning, bone breaking, hair pulling, hitting, interfearance with the healing of wounds, and any other way to harm one's self. |

People who cut themselves can do it for a various aray of reasons such as: a way to punish themselves, to express emotion or feeling, stress, pressure, or just because they feel they need to cope. once a person bugun harming themselves, it becomes addicting. You feel like you have to take a lighter to your leg, or drag a razor across you arms just to feel "ok". People who harm themselves somtimes feel that they have to, like there is no other way to fight what they are feeling. If you are not a self mutalator, its probably difficult for you to understand why someone would want to intentionally hurt themself. Some self injurers become so numb that seeing their own blood after cutting themselves help them feel alive because they feel so dead inside. Self injury can also spawn if the person has been abused emotionally or physically. Victims of child abuse, sexual abuse, spousal abuse, ect. may feel ashamed or to blame for being abused and will cause them to want to punish themselves. These victims will offen carve demeaning names into their flesh toreming themselves of what a horrible person they are. Whatever form of self mutilation the person has, after harming themself, they genuinely feel calm and peacefull. This feeling may last for two minutes or two hours depending on the amount of harm they did on themselves causing them to continue harming themselves to feel it again. |
| Its is often very difficult for a person to admit to another person that they harm themself. In order to overcome self mutilation, the person has to want to. After admiting to themself that what they are doing is not healthy, the person then must find treatment whether it be a therapist, a friend, or even a journal.Bottled up emotions will cause the person to go back harming themself. I know what im talking about, I'v been there done that.... Its not a one's man (womans) battle. |
