The Olympians About the name ‘Olympian’ There seems to be some confusion. Some think it’s those athletes that win But it’s also those who just begin. The dedication and the pain Commitment, is about the same. Whether ultimately won or lost To run the race is the same cost. Just one more inch, portion of time And everything would have gone fine. The agony on athletes’ face You see on both first and last place. Eyes blazing with need to be first They do not stop, even for thirst. Hardened muscles, years of pain They live to just one medal gain. One accident can ruin a dream And then we hear the silent scream: A rictus of both fear and rage Hidden in public image. 1,000,000 or more eyes to view If their courage is false or true. So tears of agony, defeat Are seldom shown, even when beat. There’s power here, we cannot feel An ingrained strength that’s very real. A quiet dedication to Doing the best that they can do. Over the years the history Of athletes’ pride in their country Has brought to viewers’ eyes a tear And given them reason to cheer. No matter which event you view You know the courage shown is true. Running, cycling, weightlifting Olympians give their everything. Who doubts the authenticity Of Special Athletes’ agony? Parathletes’ misery Overcome by bravery. These Special Athletes, who to win Must from childbirth, training begin. And even after years of pain They never do real prestige gain. As spectators we owe to all That we should their courage recall. Tell these Olympians, each one We understand, and say ‘well done’. Send them a note, by phone or mail We know they tried, and did not fail. First or last place, it matters not We honour them for what they sought. What counts is how you ran the race Not if you got first or last place. Both ecstasy and agony Forever in our memory. Dave C.
