What to do when first you know
It's easier to disinterest show,
That it's not vital loved ones see
That you need their love desperately?

Is this the start of something bad?
Or is it just incredibly sad?
Is this the start of the ending
Or just a natural changing?

Roll over, and a good book read.
Is this the life you want to lead?
Pretend indifference, matters not!
Is this the real love that you sought?

So easy to grow far apart
If you forget what's in your heart.
So easy to just let things ride
Because then you can your pain hide.

You fall in love, and there's the chance
That your love may seek a distance.
But what to do when first you find
That you do not now as much mind.

That desperate yearning first you felt
That caused your very bones to melt
Was bound to decline some in time.
So you just pretend all is fine.

It's time, or maybe it's the strife
That caused this change in your love life.
Or maybe it's just natural
That need for each other should pall.

That self-respect, so important
And risking hurt you simply can't!
Why should you take the risk, and try?
Easier to just let your love die.

After all, who wants to take
A chance of making a mistake?
If you show that your needs still great
You may be laughed at by your mate.

But what if you're wrong, and they mean
To keep the distance that you've seen?
If you're the first to show caring
Self-respect you may be losing!

The distance might have come from pain
Or fear of being hurt again.
The distance could mean that they need
You to their insecurities feed.

And yes,the closeness you once had
You thought worth more than all you had.
But take a chance, and risk more pain?
What is it that you hope to gain?

OH YES!! A love so real and true!
A sharing that no other knew.
A bonding that makes one from two
A wondrous feeling deep in you.

For these, and all those other things
Lack of this distance always brings.
For these, you'll fight, you'll risk again
The ridicule, the growing pain.

Why should you even think to fight?
It's much easier to hide in fright!
So what if you lose love that's true
At least no one is hurting you!

Next time, it may be you who flees
And your love whom the distance sees.
Would you want them to take a chance?
Recapture love, or gain distance?

Over the years, distance can grow
But this one fact you'll always know:
No matter what the cost may be
This love you'll need eternally.

There is no price too high to pay
When you can hear your loved one say
"Thank you for sticking around
I have, again, our closeness found."

This time you will be the first one
To fight the wrong that life has done.
To bring again, close together
Those promised in love forever.
