Camp Nutrition Quest”

Class: Physical Education Class

Grade Level: 4-6 Grades

Introduction:

Our country is struggling with the issue of obesity and food nutrition and fitness.  Many adults say that children today are not healthy because they do not exercise enough, they eat too much junk food, and watch too much television.

The Task:

Your task is an opportunity to prove them wrong. You are being asked to join with two other classmates to form a team and become camp counselors for this summer. This is a camp for kids ages 6 to 8. The camp’s focus is on creating healthy lifestyles and teaching campers how to stay fit by exercising and eating properly. You have three responsibilities as a team during experience of preparing for camp.  At the end you are expected to have prepared the following:

1.    Learn about heart rate, target heart rate, exercise and show what you have learned using a flow chart, web, or graph in a presentation for the campers.

2.    Develop a brochure for parents with tips about helping their children stay healthy, and include games or activities that will help them stay fit.

3.    Develop a menu for the week that includes breakfast, lunch, a healthy snack, and dinner.  Healthy foods and meals should be strategically planned to provide all the essential nutrients for one day according to the food pyramid guide.  Make the menu fun and healthy so campers will enjoy eating at meal times.
