Michel Haché dit Gallant

Michel Haché dit Gallant was born in Trois-Rivières, Acadia in 1662 and baptized on April 24, 1668. The registers mention him as the son of '' a Frenchman and an Eskimo'' and it is believed that he was the natural son of Pierre Larcher, whose origins are from the parish of Saint-Pierre, in the city of Montdidier, in Picardie. In the census of 1686, he is listed as 22 and a servant of Michel Le Neuf de la Vallière. It is said he received the name Gallant following a battle where he fought gallantly. Some of Michel Haché's descendants have taken the last name Gallant.

He married Anne Cormier around 1690. She is the daughter of Thomas Cormier et de Marie-Madeleine Girouard. Thirty years later in 1720, Michel, his wife Anne-Marie and their children are the first family to establish Île Saint-Jean (Prince Edward Island). This monument in honour of Michel Haché dit Gallant and Anne Cormier stands today in Fort Amherst Port Lajoye National Historical Park near Charlottetown, P.E.I. recognizing them as the first white settlers on Prince Edward Island.

Unfortunately, the first pioneer Michel Haché dit Gallant perished in a drowning accident in the ‘Rivière du Nord', on Île St-Jean, April 10, 1737.

Michel Haché dit Gallant and Anne Cormier had twelve children and we are descendants of two of his sons:

  1. The fourth son Charles Haché dit Gallant was born around 1692. He married Geneviève Lavergne (Pierre & Anne Bernon) in Port Royal on February 24, 1727.

Charles Haché dit Gallant and Geneviève Lavergne had a son named Joseph Haché, born November 26, 1744 in Port Lajoie, Ile St-Jean (P.E.I.). Joseph Haché married Madeleine Doucet on June 22, 1772 in Nipisiguit (Bathurst, N.B.). Their son, Sylvain Haché was born June 3, 1772 and married Anastasie Lavigne September 19, 1796 in Caraquet. Their daughter, Marie-Marguerite Haché-Gallant married Pierre Pitre on January 10, 1848 in Bathurst, N.B.

  2. Jacques Haché dit Gallant, born around 1712, is the youngest son of the pioneer family. He married in Port-Lajoie, on June 20, 1735, Marie-Josèphe Boudreau daughter of François Boudrot dit Manne and Jeanne Landry.

Jacques Haché dit Gallant and Marie-Josèphe Boudreau are the maternal grandparents of Marguerite Boudreau.
