HILAIRE PITRE

The property where the present-day Church is found, in the center of the Village of Beresford, N.B. used to belong to Hilaire Pitre (son of Jean-Baptiste Pitre and Marie Haché). Hilaire married Tharsille, daughter of Thimothé Boudreau and Vénérande Doucet on September 1, 1835 in Petit Rocher. (The Village of Beresford was at the limit of the parish of Petit-Rocher and Sainte-Famille de Bathurst but the Church in Petit-Rocher was the closest at the time)

Hilaire Pitre was born April 6, 1818 in Bathurst where he grew up the son of Jean-Baptiste Pitre & Marie Haché. Many family ties brought him to Beresford. (Aunts, oncles, maternal grandmother)

Hilaire Pitre bought the lot between the Millstream and City Hall. Married to Tharsille Boudreau , he settled in the centre of Beresford where his son Victor Pitre later settled.

An older resident of Beresford remembered him as a widower, walking with two canes who sold them candies he called 'sweeties'. Hilaire Pitre owned the only store in Beresford. First a very small store near the Millstream where Donald Pitre later lived. He moved the store to the 'Big House. This was an especially long house which was situated near the present day presbytery. Without going outside, you could leave the house through a passageway which lead you to a wood shed, then the henhouse, then grain storage to access the barn where the animals were kept. In front, a large bay window served as shop window.
