Yellow: You fight Jessie&James on more than one occasion

How do I capture Pokemon?
First off, you need to purchase some Poke Balls at a Poke Mart. Each
kind of ball can perform better or worse than others. Then visit a
cave or an area with grass. There are some another places, but you
see those the most. Walk around until you go into battle. Have your
Pokemon fight the enemy until the enemy's HP is very low.
Use your Poke Ball, and you should be able to capture one. If not,
keep trying. And remember you cannot capture a trainer's Pokemon!

I captured a Pokemon, now what do I do?
Now you can train your Pokemon to fight. Remember, to heal your
Pokemon, just visit a Pokemon Center. Also once you capture one, data
is recorded in your PokeDex. With that, you can find some info and
where you can find it. I won't go into much more detail because other
parts of this section explain them.

How do my Pokemon learn moves?
You can get them in one of two ways. Once Pokemon reach a certain
level they learn a move. Another way is to use a TM or HM on it. use
Power Points (PP). So when you don't have any PP, the
Pokemon can't use the move until healed. Remember that your Pokemon
can only have four moves at a time!

What are ‘types’?
Every Pokemon has one or two types out of fifteen. They tell how your
Pokemon will perform against other types. Look in your manual to find
the Battle Chart. For example, a Grass-type does great against a
Water-type, but it does poor against a Fire-type.

How do I build levels?
If you played an RPG before, you should understand know how it works.
First, find an area like I said about before for capturing, or you
can fight trainers. Go into battle, and if your Pokemon wins, it
gains EXP. Once it gets a certain amount of EXP, it goes up a level.
With a level-up, its stats increases. To see how much is needed,
check its stats. If you switch Pokemon in battle, they both get EXP,
but the amount is reduced. That can also help when you want to build
your low-level Pokemon.

What are the Technical Machines (TM’s) and Hidden Machines (HM’s) for?
These items can teach your Pokemon new moves for battle, but they work
a bit differently. TM’s can only be used once and only work in battle.
HM’s can be used over and over, and the moves work on the
Field Map and battle. Most moves can only work with certain Pokemon,
such as "Fly" only works with Flying-type.

How do my Pokemon evolve?
Some Pokemon may evolve a couple times or some may not evolve at all.
When they evolve, the Pokemon's stats increase more than a level-up
would. Pokemon can in one of three ways:

#1: Level-Up
This one is used more than the others. The Pokemon changes once it
reaches a certain level. For example, Kakuna evolves into Beedrill at
around Level 10.

#2: Item
Some Pokemon only evolve if you use a certain Stone. Most Stones can
be bought at Celadon City. For example, Staryu evolves into Starmie
if you use a Water Stone on it.

#3: Trade
These Pokemon only evolve if you trade with a friend who has another
Game Pak. This applies to four Pokemon. For example, Graveler evolves
into Golem when traded.

How do I earn money?
There are two ways to do this. You can fight a trainer and win or use
the "Pay Day" attack. You can get Pay Day from Meowth or from a TM on
Route 12.

A Few Tips:
- Use strategy! Using it will make Pokemon MUCH easier!
- Build levels whenever possible and try to build them evenly.
- If you carry six Pokemon, capture another one and automatically
goes to the PC!
- Trade often for new Pokemon!
- When you use traded Pokemon, they gain about 1/2 more EXP than a
regular Pokemon!
- When a Pokemon evolves, its stats increase more than a normal
level-up would. Also its type may change after evolving.
- Fight trainers when you can to earn more money.
- Search trees, rocks, etc. for some free items. You usually find
them if it is in a "strange" place such as a tree being in the middle
of nowhere.
- If you use Poison-type Pokemon, you won't need to worry about being
poisoned!
- In both Versions, there are five Pokemon (Snorlax, Zapdos,
Articuno, Moltres, and Mewtwo) that appear once (Snorlax appears
twice). So capturing them will be a good addition to your collection!

*********************************************************************
2)   IMPORTANT INFORMATION
*********************************************************************

This section includes various information about the game.

===============
Hidden Machines
===============

HM 01 - Cut:
  In order for you to get the HM 01, you must first get the S.S.
Ticket. Go to Route 24 and 25 and visit Bill the Pokemanic. Bill had
bizarre accident with a new experimental machine. Talk to him, and
he goes into the machine. Use the PC, and Bill will be changed back
to normal. He will give you the ticket as a reward. Visit Vermilion
City and board the S.S. Anne. Work your way around the ship until you
fight Gary. Beat Gary and go down the stairs to enter the captain's
room. Talk to him and "rub" his back to get the HM. The Cut ability
allows you to cut down trees to access other areas.

HM 02 - Fly:
  This one is not that hard to get. Go to Route 16 west of Celadon
City. Cut down the tree and follow the road into a building. Keep
going west and enter the house. The person inside will give you the
HM. The Fly ability allows you to visit cities you've been to.

HM 03 - Surf:
  This one is located in the Secret House in Safari Zone. I can't
really explain this well, so just try to make your way around. Once
you reach the house, the man inside gives you the HM as a prize. The
Surf ability allows you to move around on water.

HM 04 - Strength:
  The Warden in Fuchsia City will give you the HM if you give him his
Gold Teeth. The teeth are located in Safari Zone. It's in Area 3 near
the Secret House. Get them and give them to the Warden. Now that he
can talk, he'll hand over the Hidden Machine. The Strength ability
allows you to move heavy boulders.

HM 05 - Flash:
  Enter Diglett's Cave east of Vermilion City. Go through to get near
Viridian Forest. The one house in that section is where one of Prof.
Oak's aides is. If you caught 10 or more kinds of Pokemon, he gives
you HM 05.

====================

#1 - Found to the right of Viridian Forest. Reach it from Diglett's
Cave.
#2 - Found at Mt. Moon.
#3 - Also at Mt. Moon. Go to the part right before the Fossils and go
right to a narrow section. Search the wall for the Stone.
#4 - Found in the Game Corner Basement in Celadon City.
#5 - (Found by: msms) Found in the Pokemon Mansion at Cinnabar
Island. Right when you enter the Mansion, they are boxes to the left
and right of you. Search around the fifth box on the right to find
the Moon Stone.

==========
Cable Club
==========
Here's some information for the Cable Club. This isn't a very big
section since there is not much to the Cable Club.

- Intro -
In case if you have no idea what the Cable Club is, you can trade or
fight your Pokemon with a friend's. But in order to do so, you must
purchase a Game Link Cable (It's not very expensive). Once you have
one, insert the end of the Cable in the "EXT. CONNECTOR" slot on the
Game Boys. Then start your games up, and go to a Pokemon Center. Talk
to the person at the entrance of the Cable Club at the same time on
both games. You can then choose to go to the Colosseum or the Trade
Center...

- Colosseum -
Here you can fight your friend! Before you enter the Cable Club, make
sure you choose the Pokemon you want to fight with because you won't
be able switch in the Cable Club! With your Pokemon, turn the PC on
to begin the fight. Not that much to say about this, but remember
that this battle will take longer since you have to wait the data to
transfer between the two Game Boys.

- Trade Center -
Here you can trade Pokemon between you and your friend! Remember that
you can only trade Pokemon, you can't just give them away (Though it
would be nice)! Here's how to trade. Turn on the PC and a screen will
come up showing you and your friend's current Pokemon. Both of you
select the Pokemon you want to trade. Then it will show the Pokemon
being transferred. Now the Pokemon that was traded will be able to
get "boosted" EXP. Here's something good that you can use to your
advantage. When you trade a Pokemon, your PokeDex will still count
the Pokemon that was traded as "caught". For example, if you trade a
Scyther for a Pinsir, your PokeDex will still count as you having a
Scyther! That can be very useful when going for all of the Pokemon.

===============
Exchange Corner
===============

At Exchange Corner in Celadon City, you trade Coins for some Pokemon
and TMs. In order to get the Coins, you win or buy them at Game
Corner. But you need a Coin Case to hold them. Near Exchange Corner,
there is a diner, and a man inside will give you the case. With that,
go back to Game Corner. Talk to the people inside for some Coins. Now
you can play the slots, or you can buy 50 Coins for $1000. Each slot
machine has different odds of winning, so if you find a good one,
stick to it! What you can get is a bit different in the Versions.
Since the price varies, the person with the cheaper Pokemon should
get it. For example, it's a good idea to have the person with the
Blue Version to get Porygon rather than Red because there is a 3,499
C difference! Here is what you can get:

--------------------------
RED VERSION
--------------------------
NAME         PRICE (Coins)

TM 50........7,700

=======
Fishing
=======

Fishing is the way of catching Water-type Pokemon, but the rods catch
different Pokemon:

Old Rod - Don't expect much, just a Magikarp will bite it, but if you
train it to Level 20, it will turn into Gyarados, a dragon (NOT a
Dragon-type) and a tough Pokemon.

Good Rod - Can catch a Goldeen, Magikarp, and Poliwag but the only
way to catch the best is the Super Rod.

Super Rod - The best rod and can catch ALL of the Pokemon in the
water.

People usually don't know what Pokemon are in a piece of water when
you use the Super Rod. But here's what you can get:

Pallet Town - Tentacool & Poliwag

Viridian City - Tentacool & Poliwag

Cerulean City - Goldeen, Psyduck, & Krabby

Vermilion City - Krabby & Shellder

Celadon City - Slowpoke & Poliwhirl

Fuchsia City - Krabby, Goldeen, Magikarp, & Seaking

Route 22 - Poliwag & Goldeen

Route 4, 24 & 25 - Same as Cerulean City

Route 6 & 11 - Same as Vermilion City

Route 10 - Same as Celadon City

Routes 12, 13, 17, & 18 - Tentacool, Krabby, Goldeen, & Magikarp

Route 19 - Shellder, Goldeen, Tentacool, Staryu, & Horsea

Safari Zone - Psyduck, Krabby, Slowpoke, & Dratini

==========================
Safari Zone (Fuchsia City)
==========================

For a low price of $500, you can enter the safari zone.
When you pay, you can 30 Safari Balls and Bait. 30 Balls may
seem a lot, but you'll end up using most of them. You have four
areas to explore, each may have a Pokemon that is not in the other.
You also have a timer, but it only decreases when you walk. If you
use the bicycle, you can go further. When you run out of time or
Balls, the game is over. The battle system in this mini-game works
different than a regular battle. Instead of having Pokemon fight,
you fight...sort of. In other words, you can't cause ANY damage to
the enemy, that's why they give you 30 Balls! You have four
commands in battle:

Ball x(Amount of Balls) - Throws a Safari Ball. You usually have to
throw multiple times to capture a Pokemon.
Bait - Throw some Bait. This makes it slightly easier to capture.
Throw Rock - Throw a nearby rock. Makes it slightly easier to
capture, but the Pokemon tends to run away after you use this.
Run - Self-explanatory.

Here's a list of Pokemon you can capture in Safari Zone:

#29 Nidoran (F)
#30 Nidorina
#32 Nidoran (M)
#33 Nidorino
#48 Venonat
#49 Venomoth
#54 Psyduck
#79 Slowpoke
#84 Doduo
#98 Krabby
#102 Exeggcute
#111 Rhyhorn
#113 Chansey
#115 Kangaskhan
#123 Scyther
#127 Pinsir
#128 Tauros
#147 Dratini

Here's a trick you can do to fight Pokemon in the Safari Zone outside
of it. Enter the Safari Zone, exit and go to the eastern side of
Seafoam Islands. Move up and down along the "shore" part to fight
Pokemon from the Safari Zone! This makes it easier to capture them.
The bad part is that there are some Pokemon that you won't find.

===============
Elite Four/Gary
===============

Elite Four:

****************************************************************
ROUND #1

TRAINER: Lorelei
POKEMON: Dewgong - L54, Cloyster - L53, Slowbro - L54, Jynx - L56,
Lapras
- L56

Lorelei is the Mistress of Ice Pokemon. This is the easiest one
because Fire, Fighting, and Electric are the ones that have
advantages. Ghost Pokemon will have an advantage over Jynx.

****************************************************************
ROUND #2

TRAINER: Bruno
POKEMON: Onix - L53, Hitmonchan - L55, Hitmonlee - L55, Onix - L56,
Machamp - L58

Bruno is a Fighting-type Pokemon master and also tougher. Flying,
Ghost, and Psychic Pokemon have the advantage on this one.
****************************************************************

NOTE: At this point, if your Pokemon are in good shape, go on.

****************************************************************
ROUND #3

TRAINER: Agatha
POKEMON: Gengar - L56, Golbat - L56, Haunter - L55, Arbok - L58,
Gengar -
L60

Agatha is the master of Ghost-type Pokemon and has a very sneaky way
of Fighting, but Water and Fire have a good chance. She is also a tad
weaker, so be relaxed. (My Note: Enough though Agatha may be weaker
than the others, few attacks will hit her Ghost Pokemon!)
****************************************************************

Now, make sure you heal your Pokemon with any type of Potions if you
have any.

****************************************************************
ROUND #4

TRAINER: Lance
POKEMON: Gyarados - L58, Dragonair - L56, Dragonair - L56, Aerodactyl
-
L60, Dragonite - L62

Lance is the leader and the toughest fighter you have seen at all
times, he has Dragon-type Pokemon. Ice, Psychic, Flying, and Ghost
Pokemon have an advantage.
****************************************************************

If you beat him, you're a Pokemon Master now! Congrats! But you got
someone else to fight...

Gary:

You've beaten the Elite Four? All right! Now you are the Pokemon
League Champion! Or, at least you would be, but you have one more
challenge ahead. Gary is the real Pokemon League Champion!

****************************************************************
TRAINER: Gary
POKEMON: Pidgeot, Alakazam, & Rhydon. His other Pokemon varies, so
here is what you may be up against...

NOTE: When it says "Chose something", that's what Gary picked, not you.

Chose Charmander: Exeggutor, Gyarados, & Charizard.
Chose Squirtle: Exeggutor, Arcanine, & Blastoise.
Chose Bulbasaur: Arcanine, Gyarados, & Venusaur.

Here's how to beat the Pokemon:

Pidgeot - Use any Electric-type Pokemon.

Alakazam - Use Jolteon or a Psychic-type Pokemon.

Rhydon - Use a Water-type or a Grass-type Pokemon.

Exeggutor/Venusaur - Use a Fire-type Pokemon.

Arcanine/Charizard - Use a Water-type. (My Note: A Rock-type Pokemon
will also do well against them.)

Gyarados/Blastoise - Like Pidgeot, an Electric-type will defeat them
easily.
****************************************************************

Now with Gary out of the way, you can explore the cave near Cerulean
City.

=======
Pikachu
=======

Well if you notice there are quite a few things different in the

Yellow version. That is because Yellow is loosely based on the Anime

show Pokemon. They include things such as:

     - Different title intro.

     - You now start off with Pikachu and follow you around.

     - Many new and improved pictures for Pokemon and trainers.

     - You now see Jessie and James from the Anime.

     - Other characters include Gizelle from the Tech School

     - And AJ who had the 100 win streak

     - You can get Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle in Yellow.

     - Codes & glitches don't seem to work in Yellow. (or they are

       different)

     - Pokemon learn different TMs and HMs.

     - Pokemon learn skills at different levels.

     And quite a few more.

Plus Pikachu has been upgraded in this game. He is one of your

more powerful Pokemon. He follows you around instead of staying in his

Poke Ball. If you talk to him you can see his current facial expression

(sad, happy, etc.) To make him happy (which you will need to do to get

Bulbasaur and do various other things) is by putting him first in

battle, not letting him die, not trying to evolve, trade, putting him

in the computer.

Also you can evolve Pikachu, the way to do this is to first trade

him to someone else's Red and Blue game, than evolve him in their game.

Now trade the now evolved Pikachu back to your game, and you will have

a Raichu.

(Note- if you do this you will not be able to play the mini-surfing

game with Pikachu, nor will you be able to do other things that involve

your Pikachu like getting Bulbasaur)

Plus you may have heard that Pikachu can surf. Well that is true,

but to get it you must win some tournament from Nintendo or use him in

Pokemon Stadium and get Surf as a prize for him. The Surf ability is

actually a mini-game, and as soon as I can get it I will have more info

on it.

Another difference you may have seen in the game is the added

feature of Colosseum 2. If you've been to any of the Pokemon League

training tours you will know what all these are about, if not basically

there are 3 cups, Poke, Pika, and Petit Cup, each with special rules

and stipulations. However you can only use this cup if you are fighting

against someone with another Yellow cart.

One of the major differences in Yellow is with your rival. He has an

Eevee which evolves depending on two major events at the beginning of

the game. He will evolve Eevee into:

Jolteon- If you win the battle against him in Professor Oak's lab, and

beat him on Route 22, near the Pokemon League. (This is done early in

the game)

Vaporeon- If you lose to him at Professor Oak's lab.

Flareon- If you beat him at Oak's lab, but lose to him at Route 22.

(It's considered a loss if you do not fight him there.)

More Information:

Talking to Pikachu

Pikachu follows you around on the map! Unless he fainted. You can talk to him at

any time, bringing up a picture of his face, showing if he is happy or sad. If

happy, sprite on the main screen will jump up and down, REALLY fast if super

happy! If really upset he will turn around and not look at you! When he sees

Bill The Pokemaniac as a Pokemon, question marks appear over his head! And when

you go to the Pokemon meeting in Vermillion City, love hearts appear when he

sees the other Pokemon!

 -Pikachu’s emotion's are rumoured to change as he improves level.

Pikachu's Moves

Pikachu learns new moves! Chief amongst them is Thunderbolt, which he gets at

level 26. Here is the list of his moves:

-Thundershock

-Growl

Pikachu starts with these 2.

LV.6 Tail Whip

LV.8 Thunderwave

LV.11 Quick Attack

LV.15 Double Team

LV.20 Slam

LV.26 Thunderbolt

LV.34 Agility

LV.41Thunder

LV.50 Light Screen

Thunder Stone

Pikachu will NOT use the Thunderstone! Thus leaving this question: How the heck

do you get a Raichu? (There are no Pikachu in the game besides the one you start

with). Just as on the cartoon; Pikachu chose not to evolve, deciding it would

fight Raichu for the honour of Pikachus everywhere. And it whupped ass too.

Pikachu talks

You can't hear it on a ROM (for whatever reason) but there are indeed samples in

this game! Pika! Pikachu!

*********************************************************************
4)   FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
*********************************************************************

Q: Where is the Old Amber fossil?
A: You need the Cut ability for this. Go to Pewter City, and cut down
   the tree near the museum. Go through the door to a room in the Pokemon
   museum, and the fossil is in that room.

Q: What's the most effective way to use the Vitamins?
A: If you're desperate, use them as soon as possible, but if you want
   the full effect, do this. Remember that a Pokemon can take about 10
   Vitamins before it work anymore on it. It seems that a Pokemon with a
   much higher Level, gains more stat points if you use a Vitamin on it.
   For example, a Pokemon at L10 will only gain 1 stat point for each
   Vitamin used which would mean it would gain 10 points for 10
   Vitamins. But if you use one on a L100 Pokemon, it would gain a
   whopping 40 stat points! So my point here is this, use the Vitamins
   on a Pokemon when you have trained as far as you can.

Q: What is the use of a PP Up?
A: It's purpose is to increase the PP of an ability of a Pokemon. You
   can use a maximum of three PP Ups per ability. But the PP increased
   will vary so here's how it works. The ability that has a low max PP
   will not increase very much, but an ability with a high max PP will.
   For example, if you use 3 PP Up on Tackle, its max will become 56
   from 35. If you use it on Hyper Beam, its max will become 8 from 5.

Q: Some of the Pokemon never evolve no matter what the Stones or the
   Level, how do I evolve them?
A: They evolve by trading the Pokemon to another Game Pak.

Q: How do I stop my Pokemon from evolving?
A: Once it starts to evolve, simply tap B to cancel the process.
   Once the Pokemon gains another Level, it'll try to evolve again.

Q: What does "Area Unknown" in the PokeDex mean?
A: It means that that Pokemon can only be evolved from another
   Pokemon or it can mean that the Pokemon can only be found in the
   other Version.

Q: What's the difference between Boosted EXP and Regular EXP?
A: Boosted EXP allows a Pokemon to gain about 1/2 more EXP than a
   Pokemon with Regular EXP. The downside with Boosted EXP is that the
   Pokemon will become weaker.

Q: Why does my Pokemon not obey me?
A: You must get the Badge that allows you to command a higher level
   Pokemon!

Q: What do you get for capturing all 150 Pokemon?
A: A man in Celadon City will give you a Diploma in the U.S. Version.

Q: Where do I find the Poke Flute?
A: Head to the 3rd and you'll find some people which evil spirits
have "taken" over them. You can free them of the evil spirits, but
it's not required to do so. Keep going up until you reach the 5th
Floor. On that floor, someone has made you a "healing tile" to heal
your Pokemon. When you try to go up the stairs on the 6th Floor, you
will fight a L30 Marowak. When you beat Cubone's Mother, her spirit
will lay to rest...allowing you to go on. On the final floor, there
will be some Rocket guards around. Defeat them, and talk to Mr. Fuji.
Then you will appear back at house. Talk to him again to get the Poke
Flute. Always carry this with you, for it will wake up sleeping
Pokemon.

Q: I've defeated [Insert Gym Leader here], and they say I can use
   [Insert HM Ability here]. How do I use it?
A: There are two requirements to use an HM. First, you must have the actual
   HM (of course). And you also need the correct Badge for that ability.

Q: I have the HM, but the ability won't work!
A: You must earn the Badge that allows you to use it!

Q: How many Masterballs are in the game?
A: Only one, so use it on a one-time Pokemon like Mewtwo.

Q: If I defeat the rare Pokemon (Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Snorlax,
   Mewtwo) is there any other way to get them?
A: No, so once you defeat one, it's gone for good!

Q: How can I earn some money?
A: There's a couple ways for this. One way is to defeat Trainers, and
   also fighting the Elite Four over and over makes getting money easy.

   Get a Meowth and use its Pay Day attack. And finally, get TM 16 which
   is at Route 12 and teach Pay Day to a Pokemon.

Q: Is there any other way to get Mew without cheating?
A: No, you need a Gameshark.

Q: How do I reach the Card Key in Silph. Co?
A: To reach it, step on the Warp Tile near the Rocket guard. Then
   when you reappear, step on it again. Now you can go past the guard to
   the Card Key!

Q: How can I move the truck near the S.S. Anne with Strength?
A: You can't!

Q: I've heard that there are other Pokemon in this Version
   of the game, such as Togepi and Pikablu. Is this true?
A: No, those Pokemon are in the Gold & Silver Versions.

Q: Is Game Boy Color's IR Connection compatible with Pokemon?
A: No, so you have to buy a Game Link Cable in order to trade.

Q: Is it possible to buy a Bicycle without a Bike Voucher?
A: No. The maximum amount of money you can have is $999,999.

Q: What are the differences between Yellow, Red and Blue?

A:

a) Scyther and Pinsir

 BOTH are in this version :) Both can be found in the same area in the Safari

Zone.

b) Charmander

 After Nugget Bridge, there is a man standing on a raised bit of land. He tells

you he is not a very good trainer, and is considering letting his Charmander go.

If you promise to take care of it (answer yes/top choice) you get a Charmander!

 -Charizard can learn HM02 (fly)

c) Squirtle

 In Vermillion City, after the trip on the St. Anne, talk to Officer Jenny. She

tells you she has a Squirtle she caught who has been causing mischief. If you

come back after beating Surge for a Thunder Badge, she recognises you as a good

trainer and asks you to take it (Choose Yes/top choice).

d) Bulbasaur

 In Cerulean City, there is a house with an Oddish, a Sandshrew and a lady stood

next to what looks like a Bulbasaur. Talk to her, and she tells you that she

looks after injured Pokemon, and that she nursed Bulbasaur back to health. She

adds it needs a good trainer. Note: Nothing I have tried so far has gotten me

the Bulbasaur. Not making Pikachu jump up and down, not taking Squirtle,

nothing.

e) Psyduck

Just north of Vermillion City, in the

grassy area where there are trainers, there is a pond, and if you surf on it for

a while, you get to fight a Psyduck!

f) Farfetch'd

South of the hut where you get the Good Rod, there

are two grassy areas. In the southern most one (you have to go into the bizarre

maze on the left and "cut" through a plant to get to this grassy area), about

one in 15 encounters ia a Farfetch'd! You can get them in the wild!

*********************************************************************
5)   WALKTHROUGH
*********************************************************************

Professor Oak will do the intro, letting you choose both your name and your

rival's name. Choose carefully as you cannot change them. I'll call you Ash for

no apparent reason.

                              =============

                              *Pallet Town*

                              =============

Ash will be in your room in front of an SNES console at the beginning of the

game. Go to the top left corner and withdraw a potion from the storage PC.

Then, go downstairs, go outside and wander into the long grass outside of

Pallet Town. Professor Oak will come to protect you and stop you from being

harmed, but a wild Pokémon will initiate a battle with Oak after a while. It is

a Pikachu. Oak will capture it and then return to his lab with you. Follow him

to the top of the lab where your rival (let's call him Gary), is waiting. Oak

will tell you to take the Poké Ball on the table. Walk over to do so. However,

before Ash can pick it up, Gary will push you out of the way and will take the

Pokémon. Oak will duly agree and give you the wild Pikachu he caught earlier.

On your way out, Gary will make you have a battle with him.

It's not too difficult to beat him. Just use Growl once and then Thundershock

for the rest of your turns. Once you defeat Gary, Pikachu receives 97

experience points, and will be boosted a level. He will also learn Tail Whip,

which lowers the opposing Pokémon's defence. If you somehow loose this battle,

switch off the game and switch it back on, effectively starting again. The

experience is instrumental, and you haven't got very far anyway for it to

matter.

After the battle, Oak will tell you how your Pikachu marvellously does not like

being in its Pokéball and wants to stay out with you for company. Naturally,

you have no choice but to agree. This is one of that main reasons in what makes

Pokémon Yellow so different than Pokémon Red and Blue. One of your main

objectives is to makes sure Pikachu is happy with you. It has no real bearing

on the actual game, however. He will start off quite unhappy, as you will see

when you look at it, but the more you battle with it and the higher its level,

the happier it will become. Anyway, exit Professor Oak's lab and return to your

house. Talk to your mother, the woman inside, and she will have you rest, which

you will need after your battle with Gary. Your health will be restored. Exit

the house and head into the long grass at the north side of Town.

There are wild Pidgeys and Rattatas between levels 2 and 4 in the grass here.

There are also two people you'll meet along the way. One will give you a

potion, the other tells you how you can jump over low walls that face in the

right position. Soon enough, after travelling north, you will arrive in

Viridian City.

                                ===============

                                *Viridian City*

                                ===============

Bypass the Pokémon Centre and go to the Pokémart. The shopkeeper will see you

have come from Pallet Town and will give you a package to be delivered to

Professor Oak. Next, go to the Pokémon centre and have Nurse Joy heal your

Pokémon. Then, return to Pallet Town. The way back is much easier and quicker

as you can hop over the walls on the way back, and thus the tedious battles

with wild Pokémon while also avoiding the task of weaving through the randomly

crooked route.

                                 =============

                                 *Pallet Town*

                                 =============

Go straight to Professor Oak's Lab. Professor Oak will commend you on your

excellent Pikachu-tending capabilities, so smile graciously and begin your

first thank-you speach. Ash will then give him the parcel which turns out to be

a custom pokéball. Gary then enters the lab. Oak will ask Gary and Ask to do

him a favour of sorts. He grants a Pokédex unto them both. A pokedex is a newly

invented Pokémon encyclopaedia. Oak wants Garry and Ash to complete the guides

for him, as, in his old age, he lacks the ability to do so (that, I don't get—

it's merely tossing some light spheres around). The Pokedex will be updated

each time you meet a new Pokémon in battle, though only a picture will be

shown. The spot will be completely filled when you catch a new Pokémon,

however. In this spot, you will find such things as a description of the

Pokémon, heigh and weight details, their call and where they are found. Anyway,

Gary will leave soon enough, leaving you free to leave Pallet Town. Heal

yourself at you're your Mom's house and then enter Gary's house, which is the

one just above Oak's Lab. Talk to Gary's sister and she will give you a World

Map, an extremely useful tool if you have limited geography of the world. It

shows you each and every road and each and every city. You may view it from the

menu, just above "Pokémon".

Leave Pallet Town for Viridian once you have done this.

                             ===============

                             *Viridian City*

                             ===============

At the top of town you will notice a gym. Gyms are where Pokémon Trainers, the

highest ranked, are situated. You must defeat these Gym Leaders in order to

obtain a badge. There are eight badges to collect, a gym in each city. Once all

eight badges have been obtained, you earn the right to participate in the

Pokémon League. The Elite Four are the trainers which are in the League.

So, anyway... Buy yourself some Poké Balls from the Pokémart in Viridian.

Fifteen should do it. Remember, to capture Pokémon, you must weaken it before

tossing a Poké Ball at it. Status changes such as sleep and paralysis help when

capturing a Pokémon. However, for the moment this is not important. All you

need to is assault it until it's health is about three-quarters way down. Then,

toss a Pokéball and hope it will succeed. There are four different types of

Pokémon you should have caught before you leave Viridian City: Rattata, Pidgey,

Nidoran Female and Nidoran Male.

By taking the West route out of town you will find the area in which both kinds

of Nidoran lie. Catch them both. If you continue westward Gary will appear. You

can fight him, but make sure to have at least two other Pokémon. It might be a

bit better if you get to Pewter City first and then go back to Viridian to

fight Gary. This may seem like a waste of time, but it gets you levels higher.

High levels are needed for the upcoming battle. Anyway, once you've decided to

leave, head North, past the gym. There will be an elderly man nearby, who when

you pass him, will show you how to catch Pokémon. Nevertheless, continue north

and you should soon find yourself out of town.

                            =================

                            *Viridian Forest*

                            =================

So far, your Pokémon Party should be about:

Pikachu          Level 8

Nidoran (M)      Level 5

Nidoran (F)      Level 5

Pidgey           Level 7

Rattata          Level 5

Don't bother levelling up Rattata. He won't be needed in this game. There will

be better Pokémon found before the first gym battle.

The next city you need to visit is Pewter City, but between Viridian and

Pewter, the Viridian Forest is situated. The forest hides many bug-type

Pokémon. Once entered, go left and up. Soon enough you should find a Pokéball.

Pick it up and go back the way you came, right. Continue that way, walking in

the grass (do this so you will ignite wild Pokémon battles, thus increasing

your Pokémon's levels when you defeat them). Fight the four trainers you meet

along the way too. None of them will have anything very strong. Not too much

bother. While in the forest, capture a Caterpie. Put it at the top of your

Pokémon list and switch it to a stronger Pokémon when a battle comes if it's

not above level six. This will up the level of it. At level seven it will

evolve to Metapod. Press B to stop the evolution and wait until level nine to

let it. At this stage it cannot attack. So, keep it at the top of the list

until it evolves at level ten to Butterfree.

By the time you reach Pewter City, your party should be:

Pikachu          Level 12

Nidoran (M)      Level 10

Nidoran (F)      Level 7

Pidgey           Level 10

Pidgeotto        Level 12

Butterfree       Level 12

If your Pokémon aren't at those levels, mess around in Viridian Forest,

fighting wild Pokémon until they are. You may have trouble catching a

Pidgeotto. They are found in Viridian Forest, but are pretty tough. Have

Pikachu paralyse it with Thunder Wave. Be wary though, they're rare and if the

one you're battling faints you won't find another for a long time. For anybody

who still has to defeat Gary on the route West of Viridian City, return there

now and defeat him. He has but a Spearow and Eevee, so, no problems there.

While you're in the area, catch yourself a Spearow and Mankey. These must be

found in the second patch of grass, however. Keep out the Spearow (deposit

Nidoran Female). Mankey isn't that great. Leave him in Someone's PC. Work with

Spearow in the Forest (flying types are strong against bug types) and level it

to about nine. Then, return to Pewter City and enter the Gym.

Defeat the Jr. Trainer for some experience and then heal your Pokémon.

Challenge Brock. Your party should be as follows:

Pikachu          Level 12

Nidoran (M)      Level 8

Spearow          Level 9

Pidgey           Level 10

Pidgeotto        Level 10

Butterfree       Level 10

       **=======================**

Brock - Pewter City Gym Leader

-Geodude          Level 10       EXP 182

-Onix             Level 12       EXP 276

Prizes:

-Boulder Badge (Attack of all Pokémon increases; HM Flash can be used.)

-TM34 (Bide)

-$1188

       **=======================**

Admittedly, having four flying types against the rock Gym Leader isn't a good

idea, but these are the strongest Pokémon you'll find for the moment. We'll

change things when we hit the next city. A little tactic I like to use is

having Pikachu use Tail Whip on Geodude to weaken his defence significantly.

When Pikachu's health reaches a little less than half way, have Butterfree go

at him. Use confusion and after about three attacks Geodude should fall. Now

the Level twelve Onix appears. Have either Pikachu or Nidoran Male to use Tail

Whip or Leer to lower Onix' defence. Onix, in his foolishness, uses Bide often.

It is an attack that has the Pokémon skip two turns and then deal twice the

amount of damage it has suffered. Using Leer or Tail Whip does not count as

defence, and so when Onix lashes back, he won't deal any damage. When Onix'

defence has been lowered four times, switch to Butterfree again. Confuse the

heck out of Onix, but if somehow Butterfree faints, use Pidgeotto. Use a

combination of Sand Attack to lower Onix's accuracy and Quick attack to finish

the match. Congratulations, you receive your first badge: the Boulder Badge.

       Also, you receive nearly $1200 and TM34, Bide. As a prize, it'll do.

There is little else in Pewter City to do. There is a museum at the North side

of town, but there's nothing in there for you yet. Before you leave, however,

Buy one escape rope and spend the rest of your money on Pokéballs.

If you're having trouble with beating Brock, you could always catch a Mankey

and level it up. Fighting Pokémon are strong versus rock kinds.

Take the road East out of Pewter City, the route to Cerulean City. There is a

cluster of trainers here. Use this opportunity to train your Pokémon and raise

some levels. Don't risk it, however--if your Pokémon are getting weak, return

to the Pokémon centre in Pewter City to heal as you loose half of your money

when you faint. Once you fight your way through the trainers there will be a

patch of grass straight ahead. This is the only place in the game where you

will find a Jigglypuff (you may remember it from the Pewter City Pokémon

Centre). It's hard to find one though--they're pretty rare. Even if you catch

one, don't withdraw it--It's pretty crap, in my opinion.

      Anyway, continue on that direction, (you will pass another patch of grass

to the right when you take your first North turn. If you didn't catch a Mankey

already, catch one there.) And soon enough you will end up at a Pokémon centre

just outside the entrance to Mount Moon. Through Mount Moon is a tunnel which

leads to the next city on your badge-winning map- -- Cerulean City. Inside the

Pokémon centre is a man selling Magicarps for $500. Don't bother taking one.

You receive it at level five and will not evolve until level twenty. The only

attack it has until Level 15 is something called 'Splash', which doesn't do any

damage... AT ALL! You can also catch them for free a bit later in the game.

Admittedly, it's evolved form, Gyarados, is extremely powerful.

                             ============

                             *Mount Moon*

                             ============

Once you've been healed, enter Mount Moon through the cutting in the cave. For

the record, I'm not going to detail which trainers to fight and which not to. I

think, personally, that you should fight them all in a bid to level up your

Pokémon. However, take a left straight away and you will find a Potion in the

top left corner of the area. Return to your right, however, and continue that

direction. Fight the trainer, (she has a Clefairy, a rare Pokémon only to be

found in Mount Moon), and continue. Take the ladder down and continue down the

path, taking the ladder you come across at the end. Team Rocket's first

appearance is here. They are a criminal organization that traffic Pokémon and

exploit them in illegal ways. They will continue to cross your path in the

game. Defeat the Rocket and pick up the HP UP on the ledge. Take the ladder and

then the path back to the main floor.

        There is a gap in the walls just ahead. Go through it. A trainer is

situated just ahead, a Bellsprout and Oddish at her disposal, so use either

Spearow or Butterfree. Continue left and then down. A ladder looms nearby, take

it and follow the path to the end. In the next area you will find a Rocket and

an item. The item is TM01, Megapunch. There is a lone rock just past the

Rocket. If you search inside it, you will find an Ether. For those who don't

know, Ethers and Elixers are used to restore PP to Pokémon's moves. Return to

the main area and you will pass a trainer. He's pretty weak, having merely two

Rattatas and a Zubat, so no worries. Go to the top of the next area. In the

corner is a Moon Stone, a very rare stone used in forced Pokémon evolution.

Indeed, some Pokémon can ONLY change into the next stage using stones such as

these.

Anyway, use the ladder to enter the next area. Continue along the path until

you come to a place with various routes leading away. There is a narrow path,

which at the end of, you can find another Moon Stone, useful later in the game.

Continue on and talk to the trainer just ahead and near the two spiral items to

battle him.

-Voltorb          Level 12       EXP 264

-Koffing          Level 12       EXP 292

Prizes:

-Choice of either Helix Fossil (Omanyte) or Dome Fossil (Kabuto)

-$300

       **=======================**

You will get a choice of two fossils, Helix or Dome. They bring you Omanyte or

Kabuto respectively later in the game. To get the other, however, you must

trade with a friend. Head towards the ladder further on. Two people you may be

familiar with from the series arrive. They are Team Rocket's Jessie and James

and wish to steal the fossils from you for Team Rocket.

       **=======================**

Take the final two ladders and you'll soon be out of Mount Moon. Head Eastward

through the paths and you will soon arrive in Cerulean City. Before you enter,

however, an item lies nearby. It is TM04, Whirlwind.

                             ===============

                             *Cerulean City*

                             ===============

Heal your Pokémon straight away. Your Pokémon party should now look something

like this:

Pikachu          Level 17

Nidoran (M)      Level 15

Spearow          Level 15

Pidgey           Level 14

Pidgeotto        Level 14

Butterfree       Level 16

That will soon change, now that you have a bigger selection of Pokémon. While

in the Pokémon centre, however, store some of your unneeded items in the PC in

the corner (Open 'Ash's PC'). Items like the Dome Fossil, all your TMs and the

Moon Stones are not needed for the moment, so store them. Next, head to the

north of the city to where a bridge is situated. Before you manage to get onto

the bridge, however, Gary, your rival, will appear. He tells briefly of his

encounter with Bill and then, as usual, initiates a battle.

       **=======================**

Gary - Cerulean Bridge

-Spearow          Level 16       EXP 222

-Sandshrew        Level 15       EXP 298

-Rattata          Level 15       EXP 183

-Eevee            Level 17       EXP 334

Prizes:

-$595

       **=======================**

His Pokémon aren't great. Use Pikachu for Spearow, and Butterfree after that.

There are five trainers lying in wait across the bridge. If you beat them all

you will get a prize, or so they say. Heal your Pokémon and return to the

bridge to defeat the trainers. At the end, a trainer will try convince you to

join Team Rocket, ending in a final Pokémon battle. The battle is pretty easy,

and you will receive a nugget by the end. Nuggets don't help you in battle, but

they can be sold for $5,000 in a Pokémart. There is some grass to the left of

you. Oddishes, Bellsprouts and Abras can be found in here, all a bit rare.

Catch them to up your level of Pokémon caught.

Further on, a trainer will stand in a new area with an item next to it. Talk to

the trainer (named Damian)  and you will be gifted with a Charmander, one of

the original starting Pokémon, also potentially a huge asset for you in the

game. The reason for receiving a random Pokémon is that its previous trainer

wasn't good enough to handle it. Charmander starts at level ten only,

however. TM45 is the item right next to the trainer. It contains Thunderwave.

Once you receive Charmander, return to the Pokémon Centre to heal and to take

him out of the storage PC in exchange for Pidgey. Continue to the right and up

the trail. There are many trainers nearby, a great place for levelling up.

Defeat them all and continue on the Bill's house.

Once you get inside, a Pokémon will appear inside the door. Talk to the Pokémon

and you will uncover that it is, infact, Bill and he messed up on an

experiment. To cure Bill of his badly-pixelled Pokémon state, you must go over

to his computer when he's in the cell. He will soon come out and repay you by

giving you an S.S. Ticket. This is a ticket on the S.S. Anne, a ship docked in

Virmilion City. Exit Bill's house and return to Cerulean and heal your Pokémon.

Enter Cerulean City's gym. The leader is Misty, a use of water Pokémon. Pikachu

is instrumental here. At this point, you should have the following:

Pikachu          Level 22

Nidorino         Level 19

Spearow          Level 18

Charmander       Level 16

Pidgeotto        Level 19

Butterfree       Level 20

The levels must be either the same or roughly right, it doesn't matter at the

moment, they'll be boosted soon. Make sure to battle both Misty's assistants,

as they will help your levels. Heal your Pokémon and ignite the battle.

       **=======================**

Misty - Cerulean City Gym Leader

-Staryu           Level 18       EXP 408

-Starmie          Level 21       EXP 931

Prizes:

-Cascade Badge (All Pokémon up to level 30 obey. HM01 can be used outside of

battle.)

-TM11 (Bubblebeam)

-$2079

       **=======================**

Pikachu is your salvation here. Keep it potioned up, as you won't have any

bother if it is on a high level, about twenty should do. If, however, it should

faint, try Butterfree's Sleep Powder to knock down the opposition. Confusion,

however, won't affect either significantly. Switch to either Pidgeotto or

Nidorino. Use either of their physical attacks to finish off Starmie. Once you

defeat Misty, heal your Pokémon and go to the house just above the gym that

previously had a guard standing outside the door. You see that house to the

left of the Pokémon Centre? If you go inside, there will be a woman nursing

sick Pokémon back to health. She is called Melanie. A bit of a Pokémon Centre-

Rip off if you ask me. Anyway, she has a Bulbasaur, another of the starting

Pokémon. You can soon receive Bulbasaur from her if Pikachu meets the

requirements of her (I'm not certain, but I believe Pikachu has to hop twice

when you talk to it and it has to be above level 20). Anyway, to the house

above the gym.

      Team Rocket have ransacked the house. Use the hole in the back of the

house and go out to the yard to confront the offending Rocket. The Rocket has a

Machop and a Drowzee, so not too much bother. After the fight, he will leave

and give you what he stole: TM28, containing Dig. Heal your Pokémon and return

to this path. Continue down it and take the turn Southward. You will see a

house nearby. This is the Pokémon day-care centre. If you deposit one of your

Pokémon inside, the Pokémon will gain one experience point per step you take

outside the house. It runs at a cost of $100 deposit and $100 then on for every

other level gained. It is a very good idea to put a Pokémon inside, so at least

you'll receive something for all the walking you do. A good Pokémon to put in

there for the moment is either Abra or Magikarp. Think about it.

If you try to enter the gates of Saffron City, you will be refused. I have no

idea WHY the gates are closed, but they are. Anyway, there is an underground

passage from Cerulean to the next city, Virmilion, if you wish to take it. See

the small house to the right? Yup, that's it. Take the underground passage and

climb the stairs at the end. You will need to do a bit more travelling before

you reach Virmilion, however. There are some trainers nearby who will fight

you. Fight them all. When you reach Virmilion, enter the Pokémon Centre and

heal your Pokémon.

                              ================

                              *Vermilion City*

                              ================

To the left of the Pokémon Centre is a house, go inside. A man called the

Fishing Guru lives inside, and will give you an old rod if you ask for it. The

old rod is pretty crap, all you can catch with it is Magikarps, though, you

saved $500 by getting one later, huh? Go southerly in the city and just above

the gym is a house with a sign outside--enter it. Pikachu will run over to a

Pokémon, Clefairy, and if you talk to Pikachu, you will see it is in love ^_^.

Talk to the man at the head of the table anyway and hear out his story. When

he's finished, he will give you a bicycle voucher. The bike store is in

Cerulean, so get your bike when you return there.

Once you've finished exploring the town, take the road East of town and you

will soon find a cave. Walk past the cave and into the patch of grass. There

are many trainers here and will do great for levelling you up. There are also

some Drowzees in the grass if you want to capture one. Don't bother levelling

up your Spearow much--it will soon be replaced. Actually, back in Vermilion

City there is a person willing to trade a Farfetch'd for a Spearow, so if you

want a Farfetch'd, talk to him. I wouldn't take Farfetch'd out, however. Soon

you'll have a better Pokémon. Just past the patch of grass is a building. Go up

the stairs and one of Professor Oak's Aides will ask you if you have caught

thirty kinds of Pokémon. If you have, you will receive an Itemfinder. The

itemfinder points out items that cannot be seen. It's a bit of a bitch to use

regularly though. Oh well, it's free, isn't it?

At this moment, you should have the following Pokémon:

Pikachu          Level 22

Nidorino         Level 22

Charmeleon       Level 20

Pidgeotto        Level 20

Butterfree       Level 20

Spearow          Level 16

Go to the docks and enter the S.S. Anne ship. If you check inside each room,

there are trainers inside. Fight and defeat them to gain levels. In the kitchen

on the level below deck, look at the third bin on the right. You will find an

ultra ball. There are a lot of water Pokémon here. Use this opportunity to up

Pikachu's level to the level needed by Bulbasaur's trainer (25). Once you get

to that level, return to Cerulean. Trade in your Bike Voucher if you haven't

already (store in the bottom left corner) and head to the previously mentioned

house. In the house, talk to Sandshrew, Oddish and Bulbasaur. The only other

problem is that Pikachu has to be exceptionally happy with you. You can tell

he's happy if he smiles and stuff when you talk to him. You're ready to take

Bulbasaur when Pikachu hops twice and grins at you. When you're ready, talk to

the nurse and she will ask you if you want to take care of the Bulbasaur. It's

only at level ten, but he will become extremely powerful. Put it in the day

care centre if you choose. Otherwise, keep it at the top of your list.

For your enjoyment, I have taken the liberty of denoting which Pokémon you

should use depending on what element Pokémon you are opposing. This only works

for the Pokémon Party I asked you to use. There won't be any Dragon-types at

this stage, so I didn't bother putting them in.

Pikachu          Level 25      Water/Flying/Normal/Ghost/Fire/Electric

Nidorino         Level 24      Rock/Normal/Fighting/Poison/Fire/Electric

Charmeleon       Level 22      Grass/Bug/Ice/

Pidgeotto        Level 22      Ground/Grass/Bug

Butterfree       Level 22      Fighting/Rock/Psychic

Ivysaur          Level 18      Water/Rock/Ground/Electric

Return to the S.S. Anne and finish fighting all the trainers. On one of the

levels, Gary, your rival, will appear after finishing looking for the Cut

master whom is apparently onboard. He will fight you.

       **=======================**

Gary - S.S. Anne

-Spearow          Level 19       EXP 234

-Rattata          Level 16       EXP 195

-Sandshrew        Level 18       EXP 358

-Eevee            Level 20       EXP 393

Prizes:

-$1300

       **=======================**

There is absolutely nothing hard about this battle. All your Pokémon should be

above Gary's levels. Just stick to the element plan above and you'll be fine.

Continue on the corridor and take the stairs to the captain's chambers. Talk to

the captain, whom is vomiting in a nearby bin ^_^. Ash will rub his back and

make him feel somehow better. You will receive HM01, a CUT technique. A HM

stands for Hidden Machine. It is like a TM, only they can be used more than

once. They are techniques mainly used outside of battle. For example, c

Cut can cut down trees or grass, while Flash can light up a dark cave. In

battle they can also be used. Cut would be the equivalent of a slightly less

powerful Slash, while Flash is the same as Sand Attack. Anyway, once you've

received HM01, leave the ship and it will depart. Go to the East route out of

town and you will soon come to a cave.

Enter the cave and continue to the end of it. This is Diglett's Cave, built

completely by Digletts. Make sure to capture one. You may come across a Dugtrio

on occasion. Do your best to capture it; though don't risk fainting, as they

are usually at level twenty-nine. Anyway, once you are at the end, you will

find yourself back at Pewter City. Go south for a while and you will see a

house. If you go inside, at the top there will be a trainer looking for

Clefairy. If you have caught one and would like to trade it for Mr. Mime, then

you can get yours out of the Pokémon Centre in Pewter City. Mr. Mime is one of

the Pokémon you cannot catch, but can only get by trading: Jynx, Likitung and

Farfetch'd are the others. Anyway, not far after the previously mentioned house

is a building, one which you must pass through. Inside is one of Professor

Oak's Aides. He will ask if you have caught 10 kinds of Pokémon, and, when you

tell him you have, he gives you HM05, Flash. Flash is used to light up dark

caves such as Rock Tunnel in Cerulean. Anyway, pass through the building and

you will find some more items along the way, HP Up and a Moon Stone.

Enter Pewter City and head to the north of the town. Enter the field to the

right of the museum via the gate and then use Cut to cut down the tree blocking

the path to the next field. Enter the building and talk to the scientist beside

the bookcases. He will give you a section of amber, telling you he believes

there is an old Pokémon fossil encased inside. Anyway, when you're ready to

return to Vermilion, do so.

Now, you are ready to face your next gym leader. Vermilion City's Gym leader is

an ex-soldier by the name of Lt. Surge. His Pokémon are of the electric

element. Seeing as how CUT is needed to cut down the bush in front of the gym,

you will need to teach it to one of your Pokémon. Personally, I hate HMs, and

despise teaching any but Fly or Surf to my main Pokémon. Since Pidgeotto will

be at a loss here, store him in Bill's PC and take out someone like Diglett

(capture one in the cave outside of town) to teach HM01 to and yet will still

be an asset in fighting electric Pokémon. Once you're ready, cut down the bush

and enter the gym.

You'll have to solve a little puzzle before receiving leave to challenge Lt.

Surge. You see all those bins littered around in a pattern? Right, there are

switches hidden inside each of them. Go around looking at each bin and when you

find a switch, the next one is in a container in a one-bin radius of the one

the switch you already found. When you've found the second, the door opens and

you may challenge Lt. Surge. For those that don't get it, it does like this:

  0    0    0    A    X

  0    0    0    B    C

  0    0    0    0    0

Say if switch one was at X, then the next switch would be at either A, B or C.

Get it? Great. There are also some assistants around who will fight you should

you go near them. Fight them for fun :). Enter Surge's room when you're ready.

Only your strongest Pokémon should be at roughly the same level as Surge's

Raichu. It covers its weaknesses well with Megapunch and Megakick, both lethel

assaulst on your Pokémon. It also has the powerful electric attack,

Thunderbolt. Its fourth attack is Growl. Use these momentarily lack of physical

damage to do much to him. Butterfree isn't much use here, though just about

everyone else should put up a decent fight.

       **=======================**

Lt. Surge - Vermilion City Gym Leader

-Raichu           Level 28       EXP 732

Prizes:

-Thunder Badge (Speed of all Pokémon increase; Use FLY outside of battle)

-TM24 (Thunderbolt)

-$2772

       **=======================**

Once you win, go outside and talk to the person dressed in black, Officer

Jenny. She will notice you have won the Thunder Badge and tell you how she has

caught a Squirtle, though it is unruly. She will ask whether you want it.

Grudgingly accept the offer. It's a bit of a conundrum here: Squirtle will soon

be great and there is no spots left in the party. Pikachu is needed. Charmeleon

and Ivysaur will be pretty good, same as Squirtle. Pidgeotto will be needed to

learn FLY when we reach Celadon. Nidorino or Butterfree must go. Let's weigh up

the stats, shall we:

Nidorino

+ Looks cool

+ Has great attacks and will learn better ones

+ One of my favourite Pokémon

+ Strong against a wide majority of attacks

- Is purple

+ Has better stats than Butterfree

+ Is going to win

+ He... uhhh... gets on better with Professor Oak...  _

Score: 6

Butterfree

- Looks like a giant flying bug

+ Has some OK attacks and is the only Pokémon with Confusion

- Fuck off

+ Strong against a lot of a attacks

+ Is blue/black

- Has worse stats than Nidorino, though special is really high

- Is SO going to lose

- So, how's the weather?

Score: -2 (Point deducted for cheating)

I think it's pretty clear than Nidorino is much better than Butterfree. Feel

free to put Butterfree in the day-care centre though. Anyway, make sure to put

Squirtle at the top of your Pokémon list--he's only at level ten. Level him up

to about sixteen and let him evolve before moving on to the next part here:

Head back to Cerulean and take out the Pokémon with CUT assigned to it

(diglett/Dugtrio?). Take the route East and cut down the bush, continuing on.

There's another cluster of trainers nearby. Don't defeat them all, make your

way along the path, avoiding trainers as best you can. In the battles you must

fight, don't use your CUT Pokémon too often. You will soon come across a

Pokémon centre. Deposit your cut Pokémon and take out whichever one you put in.

Return to the cluster of trainers and begin fighting the rest of them.

Somewhere along the way is an item, TM30--Teleport.

                                =============

                                *Rock Tunnel*

                                =============

       When you arrive at Rock Tunnel and enter, you will see it's pretty dark

inside. You can see the walls, but not anything between them, items, or

trainers. If you want, you can do it that way, but I'm going to use Flash. You

can take out Butterfree if you want, it can learn Flash. I'm going to use an

Abra though. Note that you cannot rewrite over a HM move with a new move, so be

careful. Enter the cave and get on your bike. Take a right, fight the trainer

and continue. Follow the path and take the ladder. Go south and take the

western route, fighting the trainer along the way. Follow the route and go

north then. Fight the trainer and continue along that path, fighting any

trainers. Soon enough the path will split. Don't worry you'll end up in the

same place in the end. Take the ladder up.

When you arrive in the next level, take the right path; you won't have to fight

the trainer if you do it right. Take the ladder down and continue along the

path. There will be trainers on either side here. Battle them if you want, you

can always return if your Pokémon are low on health. Take a left and battle the

trainer. You are now at the end. Take the ladder and you will be at the exit.

Manoeuvre your way around the trainers and you will soon arrive in Lavender

Town.

                               ===============

                               *Lavender Town*

                               ===============

Go to the Pokémon Centre. Deposit your flash Pokémon and take out Charmeleon.

Heal your Pokémon then. Lavender Town has two most distinguishing features: its

Pokémon burial tower, and its Name Ratter. The former is inhabited by Pokémon

spirits and Ghost element Pokémon. The second is a place where you can change

the name or nickname of your Pokémon. First of all, head back to Rock Tunnel

and defeat any trainers you may have skipped over while in the need to get to a

Pokémon centre. Then, battle the trainers just outside. There is a lone bush

around there. In it is hidden a Max Ether.

There's not much for you at the moment in Lavender Town, so head west. There

are two trainers here, neither tough at all. Defeat them and take the path,

which turns northwards. Go west and defeat some of the trainers there. If you

have a Pokémon with cut in your party, you can bypass this part and take a

shortcut through the grass. Anyway, follow the path and enter the house you

soon come to. This is another underground path, like the one from Cerulean to

Vermilion, only this time from Lavender Town to Celadon City. Follow the path

and take the stairs at the end. Exit the building and go west to Celadon.

                                ==============

                                *Celadon City*

                                ==============

This city is much bigger than the others you've been to so far. In here is a

Pokémon Research Lab, a Game Corner, and the biggest Pokémart in the area.

Bypass them all and take the Westward route away from the city. Cut down the

bush and (in the grass nearby you can catch a Doduo...) go through the gates

and enter the house you will find. A girl inside will randomly give you a HM.

Take it to be polite and teach it to Pidgeotto. Right now, you can go back and

do anything you forgot to. Fly will have your Pokémon bring you to any city

you've already been to. It counts as being in a city when you've visited the

Pokémon centre, so when you're brought to a city via Fly, you will be left at

the town's Pokémon centre. Once you're ready, head over to the town's Pokémon

mart.

      Go to the roof and buy one Soda, one can of Fresh Water and one can of

Lemonade. Talk to the little girl nearby. She will say she's thirsty. Give her

a drink and she will give a TM. Give her one of each of the drinks and you will

get a total of three TMs: TM13, TM48 and TM49, containing Ice Beam, Rock Slide

and Tri Attack respectively. Go to the third floor and talk to the guy behind

the counter. He will give you TM18: Counter. On floor two is the TM section and

the other normal Pokémart stuff. On level four is the Evolution stone section.

Leave the Pokémon Centre when you're ready.

There is a large mansion with a door in front of it in the centre of town.

Ignore the door and go behind the back of the Pokémon Centre and continue.

Enter the back door of the Mansion. Climb the stairs and go inside the building

on top. The man inside is some sort of king-guy. On the table is a Pokéball,

holding Eevee inside. Pick it up and head back to the Pokémon Centre so you can

withdraw it. You have four choices: Leave it as an Eevee learning normal-type

attacks, evolve it to Vaporeon, evolve it to Jolteon or evolve it to Flareon.

Each of them are great Pokémon, though I prefer Jolteon. He is, in fact, one of

the best Pokémon in the game. To evolve it to Jolteon, get a thunderstone from

the Pokémart, to evolve it to Vaporeon get a waterstone and to evolve it to

Flareon you must get a firestone. Once you're satisfied with your choice,

continue. Oh, by the way, put Nidorino in the PC to allow for your new Pokémon.

Whoever you evolve it to, you should probably teach it a TM for the moment. Its

attacks are crap for a while.

Anyway, mess around for a while between Saffron, Celadon and Lavender. By the

way, to get into Saffron City, enter the gates to Saffron and talk to the

guard. If you have a drink from the top of Celadon's Pokémart then you can go

ahead on through. When you're read, head to the Game Corner. This is the Game

Corner. It is a gambling building, mainly slot machines. You can purchase 50

Game coins for $1000. But you must get a Coin Case first. To get one, head to

the café on the bottom row of stores, the depressed guy in the corner will give

it to you. If you walk around in the GC while pressing A, you will pick up

dropped coins. When you're ready, talk to the suspicious guard next to the

poster. He will get a bit shady and will quickly battle you. Having a Zubat and

Raticate, he'll be dispatched with much ease. When he runs to tell the BOSS,

press the button behind the poster and enter the uncovered hole to the right.

       Go to the left and battle the guard, taking the item (an escape rope)

when you win. Then head to the right and battle the Rocket guardian the

opening. You don't really need to, but it'll help later on. Take the stairs

down a level when you're ready. The next Rock will say something about the

Silph Scope. Curious? I am. For the moment, don't go into the maze. Just take

the stairs down. Battle the next rocket and take the item at the end, TM10:

Double-Edge. There is another maze just here. This time you must go into it.

Skip the first entrance and choose to take the middle entrance. Take the path

right, and take the thing to push you down. Get the Rare Candy and return to

the top again. Take the path left and then take two steps down. Take two steps

left, three down, three left, two down and finally two to the right. Battle the

rocket and take the stairs down. Take the path going up and enter the room on

the left. Battle the Rocket and pick up the Left Key he drops. Get the item on

the other side of the table (TM Razor Wind) and return up the stairs to the

previous floor. Now you may enter the maze. Take the lower of the two options

and when you land, go around the block and take the Nugget. There is another

moonstone for you just down a bit. From the stopping point, take one step

right, two down and another right. You will receive TM07. From the stopping

point, take two steps right, three down and one left. Then take two steps

right. Take two steps left, and go down and take the upper of the two options.

Take one step right and one down. Take the stairs and battle the two Rockets,

taking the Hyper Potion in the top left corner when finished. Return downstairs

and take the elevator to Floor Four. Battle the rocket and exit Game Corner to

heal your Pokémon in the Centre. Return there and take the elevator to Level

One when you're ready. Jessie and James come to confront you.

-Meowth           Level 25       EXP 369

-Ekans            Level 25       EXP 331

Prizes:

-$750

       **=======================**

Go into the room ahead. This is the Team Rocket leader, by the name of

Giovanni. Just behind him in the press is a Super Potion, by the way. Talk to

him.

       **=======================**

Giovanni - Celadon City Game Corner

-Onix             Level 25       EXP 577

-Rhyhorn          Level 24       EXP 693

-Persian          Level 29       EXP 919

Prizes:

-Silph Scope

-$2871

       **=======================**

Giovanni avoids any backchat and battles straight away. The first Pokémon out

is Onix, so Bulbasaur or Squirtle should be more than enough to defeat it. Make

sure to keep one of them at the top of your list. Second is Rhyhorn, so use

either Bulbasaur's Vine Whip or Squirtle's Water Gun to defeat him. A high-

levelled Persian is the final Pokémon. Because it is a Normal type, it'll take

a few attacks to defeat it. Use either Pikachu or Jolteon. Once you defeat

Giovanni, he will disappear, randomly leaving a Silph Scope behind. You'll be

needed that later, so put it in your PC when you return to the Pokémon Centre.

Right now, we're going to head to Celadon's Gym Leader, Erika. Cut is needed to

enter this gym, so take out your CUT Pokémon and put in Wartortle. Get on your

bicycle and head to the gym. Erika has many assistants. Battle them all for

experience.

       **=======================**

Erika - Celadon City Gym Leader

-Tangela          Level 30       EXP 1066

-Weepinbell       Level 32       EXP 1035

-Gloom            Level 32       EXP 904

Prizes:

-Rainbow Badge (Pokémon up to Level 50 obey; Strength can be used out of

battle.)

-TM21 (Mega Drain)

-$3168

       **=======================**

Erika's Pokémon aren't really as strong as their levels tell you. Between

Pidgeotto and Charmeleon you should be able to handle them with easy.

Pidgeotto's FLY and Charmeleon's Ember attack are the attacks to use. Ember is

pretty weak, however, so it may take two or three shots to take down any.

Tangela is probably the hardest, having constrict and bind and all that...

Anyway, the main point is you shouldn't have any bother here. None. At all.

Ever. When you're healed and ready, go to Lavender Town.

                               ===============

                               *Lavender Town*

                               ===============

Enter the Pokémon Tower. This is a place where dead Pokémon are left to rest

for eternity. There are many ghost-element Pokémon inside, with some Channelers

too. Anyway, head up the stairs and Gary will soon appear.

       **=======================**

Gary - Pokémon Tower

-Fearow           Level 25       EXP 867

-Shellder         Level 23       EXP 477

-Vulpix           Level 22       EXP 290

-Sandshrew        Level 20       EXP 397

-Eevee            Level 25       EXP 492

Prizes:

-$1625

       **=======================**

These are the Pokémon you should currently have... roughly:

Pikachu          Level 32

Jolteon          Level 28

Charmeleon       Level 29

Pidgeotto        Level 28

Wartortle        Level 27

Ivysaur          Level 27

Continue to the left and pass the Channeler. Go up the stairs. You might as

well battle all the Channelers, as some level-uppery is needed. You will get

some items along the way as part of the deal. Each Channeler only possesses

ghost-types. You may be wondering what type of Pokémon would defeat ghosts with

ease... Your answer is either Pidgeotto or Pikachu. There's not much to tell

you until you get to the second last floor. Just battle through all the

Channelers and pick up any items you find. Make sure to catch a Gastly or

Haunter if you can. There are Cubones found here too, but they are extremely

rare. Catch one of those too if you can. On sixth (I think) level, you will

find a two-by-two area of squares. This is a revitalization square, it saves

you going to a Pokémon Centre.

Anyway, you will soon reach the second last level, and text warning you will

appear on the screen. A battle will ensue and your Silph Scope will decipher

what the Pokémon is: A Marrowak. Don't even bother trying to catch it; it will

dodge all types of Pokéball. It is only level thirty, so not too much bother.

Once you defeat it, its spirit will become restful and will leave the Pokémon

Tower. Climb the stairs now and Jessie and James appear.

       **=======================**

Rocket - Pokémon Tower

-Meowth           Level 27       EXP 399

-Arbok            Level 27       EXP 850

-Weezing          Level 27       EXP 1000

Prizes:

-$810

       **=======================**

Some pretty big EXP prizes here. The Pokémon however aren't too strong. Weezing

is your biggest problem, but even then it's not a problem at all :). Anyway,

once you defeat Team Rocket continue up the path and talk to the old man, whose

name is Mr. Fuji. He will have you follow him to his house. Talk to him once

you reach it. He will give you a Poké Flute. This is a special flute that will

wake any sleeping Pokémon, in and out of battle.

Now, take the path South of Lavender Town. Enter the building nearby and go

upstairs. Talk to one of the trainers and he will give you a TM, 39 (Swift).

Return to the path and continue south. Follow the main path and battle any

trainers you find. They mostly have water Pokémon, so use either Pikachu or

Ivysaur. The path is long, so take your bike out. You will soon come to a T-

junction, with a large Pokémon blocking all paths. Play the poke flute by him

and he will awaken and attack you. Snorlax, it is.

        Snorlax has great defence and a pretty strong attack to. It's at level

thirty so only use Pokémon above that level. Pikachu is a good choice. It uses

the move Rest to get effect here, resting every two goes. For those that don't

know, Rest is where a Pokémon falls asleep for two turns, but their entire

health is healed during the time they are asleep. Pikachu's Thunderbolt should

get him pretty low on HP. Try using the Pokéball trick. (Just before the ball

is thrown, press A and then B quickly in the little space between when you

select it and when you throw the ball.) I really hate Snorlax for some reason,

so I'm going to leave him out of my party for this game. Heal your Pokémon and

continue ahead.

If you take a left here and go up the stairs, you can get an Itemfinder, just

in case you didn't have enough Pokémon to get it when you were in Vermilion

before. Continue down the southern path now, battling all trainers. Not too far

after Snorlax is a house by the water. The fishing guru's brother lives inside.

If you talk to him, he will eventually give you a Super Rod. This is the best

kind of fishing rod in the game, so you should rejoice... right now, in fact!

Go outside and start fishing for some new Pokémon to up your total. When done,

the path is pretty straightforward. Just battle all the trainers and soon

enough you will arrive in Fuchsia. Just before Fuchsia, at the gates, Professor

Oak's Aide is upstairs. If you have caught 50 kinds of Pokémon, you will

receive EXP All. This is a special item that takes out the average share for

each Pokémon and dispenses it between the other Pokémon you have in your party.

I find it pretty useless, however.

                               ==============

                               *Fuchsia City*

                               ==============

Usually, I go straight to the Safari Zone when arriving in Fuchsia. I suggest

you do the same. It is located at the north of the town. It costs $500 to

enter. In the Safari Zone, you cannot battle the Pokémon with your Pokémon. You

must either throw bait, a rock or a pokéball. It's pretty tough to capture

Pokémon here, alas. They seem to run whenever you throw rocks. The bait does

little for capture. You have 500 steps in the Safari Zone and 30 Safari Balls

(special types). You must leave when you run out of either Safari Balls or

steps. There is a prize for getting to a certain house in Fuchsia. Here is a

walkthrough of how to get there:

Go north and take the path east. Continue east and take the steps onto the

rock, then heading back west. Take the steps off the rock and go north. Take

the steps onto the next rock, go slightly east and get off the rock again. Walk

around the back of the rock and go west. Continue west after getting to the

next section. Bypass the rock and the path south instead taking the most

northerly rock. Go up around the back of the patch of pools and take the path

south. The Warden's Gold Teeth will be nearby. Pick them up and continue west.

That is the Secret House right there. The bottom of the two statues on the

right holds a hidden item. You will receive HM03: Surf, once you talk to the

man. It has Pokémon ferry you across bodies of water. Teach it to

Wartortle/Blastoise. Alas, you cannot use it until you defeat Fuchsia's Gym

Leader. This can wait for a while. Bring the Gold Teeth to the Warden and he

will give you HM04: Strength. Now, head West of Fuchsia City and get onto the

Bike Road. Travel up that roam and defeat all of the trainers you come to so

you can increase your levels. Now head to Saffron City.

                               ==============

                               *Saffron City*

                               ==============

If you have yet to enter Saffron, fly to Celadon City. Go to the Department

Store and go to the roof. Buy a Fresh Water and head to the guards on the edge

of the city. Give them the water and you can enter Saffron. Just above the

Pokémon Centre is Silph Company. Enter it. Go around the pool of water and head

to the stairs. Team Rocket have taken over Silph Co., and well-known Pokémon-

goods maker. Battle your way through the building, defeating all Rockets and

getting all items. This part is pretty long and tough, but it's also one of my

favourite in the game. There are a lot of locked doors, but you'll be able to

open them soon enough. As usual, the main Pokémon Rockets have are Electric,

Fighting and Poison types.

On the Fifth floor, two of the 'Rocket Brothers' are guarding the Key to unlock

all doors. Go to the leftmost of the Rocket Brothers. Talk to him and battle

him. Step onto the Teleport Square and you will be teleported to somewhere on

another floor. Step back on the square and you will be returned, walk to the

south though and you can go between the two Rockets to take the Card Key. Leave

via the same way. Anyway, return to the bottom floor and work your way to the

top floor battling all Rockets, opening all doors and taking all items.

Whenever you need healing, go to the Ninth Floor. Go left and then down. Unlock

the door and talk to the woman amidst the beds. She will have you rest. You can

then return to your eternal ass-kickage.

Once your ass-kickery has been completed, head to the Ninth Floor and heal

yourself. Go up a little bit and take the left here. Battle the trainer and

continue down the path, making sure to step on the teleport square. You will

land somewhere on the third floor. Get on the Teleport Square in the opposite

room. Gary lies in wait just below.

       **=======================**

Gary - Silph Co.

-Sandslash        Level 38       EXP 1326

-Ninetails        Level 35       EXP 1335

-Cloyster         Level 37       EXP 1609

-Kadabra          Level 35       EXP 1087

-Eevee (Evolved)  Level 40       EXP 1687

Prizes:

-$2600

       **=======================**

Gary's Eevee will have evolved, depending on which elemental stone you used

first. If you used a waterstone, it will evolve to Vaporeon, if you used a

thunderstone first, it will evolve to Jolteon and will evolve to Flareon if you

used the firestone first. There is nothing to be worried about here either.

Make sure to place Blastoise first, that should be enough to take out Sandslash

and Ninetails. Switch to Venusaur then and use either Pikachu or Charizard for

Kadabra. You have nothing that can directly counter Kadabra, so just go with

high levels and strong normal-damaging attacks. If you're fighting Jolteon or

Vaporeon, switch to Venusaur, and if you're fighting Flareon, switch to

Blastoise. Once you defeat Gary, he will leave, telling you he is going to the

Pokémon League to defeat the Elite Four. When he leaves, talk to the guy

nearby. He will give you Lapras, a rare sea Pokémon. It looks sort of like a

whale. It's only at level fifteen, so isn't much use. However, this is the only

way you can get Lapras without trading or by gameshark. Once you've been

healed, enter the next Teleport Square. Head down the path. Before you can move

very far, however, Jessie and James appear.

       **=======================**

Rocket - Silph Co.

-Weezing          Level 31       EXP 1149

-Arbok            Level 31       EXP 976

-Meowth           Level 31       EXP 457

Prizes:

-$930

       **=======================**

You have nothing to directly counter either Weezing or Arbok, but they are at

very low levels, so it doesn't really matter much. Try either Pidgeot or

Blastoise - both do well. Jolteon's Double Kick is pretty good with Meowth

either. Anyway, none of them will pose you any threat. You don't even need to

go back to heal. Continue down the path and open the door. Once you take a step

inside, Giovanni, the Team Rocket leader, will issue an immediate challenge.

       **=======================**

Giovanni - Silph Co.

-Nidorino         Level 37       EXP 934

-Persian          Level 35       EXP 1110

-Rhyhorn          Level 37       EXP 1069

-Nidoqueen        Level 41       EXP 1704

Prizes:

-$4059

       **=======================**

Giovanni, again, isn't as tough as you might think. Nidorino falls pretty

easily to Blastoise' Surf, and Persian succumbs also to Jolteon's Double Kick.

Rhyhorn can be defeated with ease by either Venusaur through Razor Leaf or by

Blastoise' Surf. Nidoqueen will pose the biggest threat because of the high

level, but still nothing to worry about. Once he is defeated, talk to the Silph

Co. President. He will give you a Master Ball. You will only get one Master

Ball in Pokémon Yellow. It holds the power to capture any Pokémon without fail.

Nothing can break out of it. You must save it for a worthwhile Pokémon then.

Once you're done, exit Silph Co. the way you entered. Take the lift finally.

Once you emerge, none of the Rockets that guarded buildings will be around.

Saffron City is now free of Team Rocket. Go to the top line of buildings and

enter the second house from the left. Go upstairs. If you have a Poké doll in

your possession, the girl will give you TM31, Mimic.

If you head to the right a bit more, you will find two gyms. The first is a

fighting Dojo, not a certified gym. Enter it however. Defeat all of the

assistants and you will soon get to fight the gym leader. Heal your Pokémon and

talk to the leader at the top to engage in a battle.

       **=======================**

Blackbelt - Fighting Dojo Leader

-Hitmonlee        Level 37       EXP 1092

-Hitmonchan       Level 37       EXP 1110

Prizes:

-Hitmonlee/Hitmonchan

-$925

       **=======================**

Nothing specifically hard about either Pokémon here. The only thing you may

have to watch out for is how much damage they can do on a continuous basis.

Dispatch them quickly to avoid making any mistakes. Once you win, you will get

a choice of either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan, due to the fact that they will not

allow you to take their badge. Personally, I prefer Hitmonchan, but it's up to

you. Choose wisely. Heal your Pokémon and then fly to Fuchsia City.

                               ==============

                               *Fuchsia City*

                               ==============

Your levels should now be high enough to defeat the Fuchsia City gym. This

gym's specialty is Poison Pokémon. Pokémon like Koffing, Weezking, Drowzee and

Hypno, really. It's also kinda hard to get to the gym leader. There are

invisible walls surrounding him. Work your way through the puzzle (if you look

closely at the screen you can see the walls), defeating all assistants. Koga is

the last person you come to at the end of the trail. Talk to him and a battle

will ignite.

       **=======================**

Koga - Fuchsia City Gym Leader

-Venonat          Level 44       EXP 706

-Venonat          Level 46       EXP 738

-Venonat          Level 48       EXP 771

-Venomoth         Level 50       EXP 1477

Prizes:

-Soul Badge (Defence of all Pokémon increases. Can now use HM03 out of battle.)

-TM06 (Toxic)

-$4950

       **=======================**

The first three Venonats are pretty simple. They have low defence, and are weak

against fire, so have Charizard take them out. Unfortunatly, there is little

EXP gained either. The levels are pretty high, probably much higher than any of

your Pokémon are at the moment. If, by chance, Charizard faints by the time

Venomoth is reached, have Pikachu finish the job. You will not lose here if you

play your cards right. Each of them have a good Psychic attack, so be careful.

Have those potions at ready. TM06 holds Toxic. It is like being poisoned only

the damage you receive on each turn gets greater each time. Do not

underestimate it. Heal your Pokémon and head to Pallet Town (Yes, Pallet Town)

                                =============

                                *Pallet Town*

                                =============

Go to the little cutting of water at the South side of town. Surf on it,

heading south. There are many trainers along the way. Defeat them, remember

that most of them have water Pokémon such as Staryu, Goldeen and Tentacool. Try

either Venusaur or Pikachu to defeat them. You will soon come to a patch of

land by the name of Cinnabar Island.

                             =================

                             *Cinnabar Island*

                             =================

Cinnabar Island is the only island nearby inhabited by humans. There is a gym

on it, the leader being a man named Blaze. This is the gym of fire Pokémon.

However, you cannot enter it yet, as you will need a key. This key is located

to the West of the gym. However, we will not enter that place either, as Blane

is way to powerful at the moment. Also on Cinnabar is a Pokémon Research lab.

If you enter the third room and talk to the Professor, he will ask you if you

have any fossils that could be resurrected. Give him the Old Amber and go to

the Pokémon Mart. Return to the lab and talk to the scientist. He will tell you

Aerodactyl was the Pokémon whose the DNA was. You will receive Aerodactyl.

Next, bring him the fossil you got from Mount Moon (Helix/Dome). Repeat the

process, and this time you will receive Omanyte (if you chose the Helix fossil)

or Kabuto (if you chose the Dome fossil).

       The scientist in the bottom right corner of the screen will trade you

Muk for a Kangaskhan, not a good trade at all. In the second room, a scientist

will give you TM35, Metronome. Metronome is a pretty decent attack. It can

randomly choose any attack from every Pokémon moveset and use it on the

opponent. In the first room there are two people who wish to trade. One is

trading a Growlithe for Dewgong, the other will trade Golduck for Rhydon.

Neither of them are great, so unless you're having a lot of trouble getting any

of those, leave. You can go to the mansion to the west of the gym, but don't

bother trying to do anything yet. Just wander around and catch some of the

Pokémon you find wild here. Growlithe, Raticate and Ponyta are some of the rare

ones. When you're ready, fly to Saffron City.

                               ==============

                               *Saffron City*

                               ==============

Head straight to the latter of the two gyms. This is Saffron City's registered

gym leader, Sabrina's, gym. She uses psychic Pokémon, so none of your current

Pokémon will have any main strengths against her. If your Jolteon has learned

Pin Missile, it will help though. Enter the gym and wander around between the

assistants, fighting them all. You must use the teleport squares to get to

where Sabrina is, in the centre. Here is a map for you:

 _______________________________________________

|       1       |       2       |       3       |

|               |               |               |

| 3           2 |    6    1     | 6           9 |

| 2           4 |           9   | 7          8  |

|_______________|_____|   |_____|_______________|

The numbers at the top represent the trainers, and also represent the number of

that chamber. There are four teleport squares in every chamber, except for 5

and 8. Five is where Sabrina is, eight is where you exit. The rest should be

easy to understand once you get inside and mess about. Once you have defeated

all the assistants, go to Sabrina's chamber and talk to her.

       **=======================**

Sabrina - Saffron City Gym Leader

-Abra             Level 50       EXP 781

-Kadabra          Level 50       EXP 1552

-Alakazam         Level 50       EXP 1992

Prizes:

-Marsh Badge (Pokémon up to level 70 obey. Can now use HM03 out of battle.)

-TM46 (Psywave)

-$4950

       **=======================**

Jolteon's Pin Missile is a pretty big strength here. You should be able to take

out the first two Pokémon with it, as they are not very powerful. Anyone, I

suppose, could take out Abra. Teleport isn't much use here. However, only 700

EXP points are given, which isn't much for level fifty. Alakazam's Recover is a

huge pain in the ass. None of your Pokémon can do huge damage to it, and so

it's pretty tough to beat. You just have to keep going at it with the strongest

attack you have, and hoping it will stray from using Recover once or twice.

Psywave doesn't cause too much damage, so don't pay much attention here. Once

you defeat Sabrina, heal your Pokémon and head to Cerulean.

                              ===============

                              *Cerulean City*

                              ===============

Take out your CUT Pokémon and take the route east of Cerulean, the one you took

along the way to Rock Tunnel. Return the cut Pokémon to the PC when you arrive

at the Pokémon Centre and then take the route just above it. There is a river-

like area on which you can surf down. Do so. Get on the land once you arrive

near it. There is a trainer close by, defeat it. This one has a Likitung, a

rare Pokémon which can only be received via trade. Enter the Power Plant when

you defeat the trainer.

                               =============

                               *Power Plant*

                               =============

This building is an abandoned Power Plant, practically a breeding ground for

electric types. Also inside is (SHOCK!) Zapdos--a legendary bird Pokémon.

Anyway, head north and pick up the Carbos along the way. Keep going northwards

and then take the path east. Then, go south. Continue south until you pass the

second turn east. Take that turn and follow it, ignoring the next turn south in

favour of going north. Keep following that path, making sure to ignore all

turns. You will soon find Zapdos just ahead. Zapdos is at level 50, and is

EXTREMELY hard to catch with anything but a Master Ball or Ultra Ball. Make

sure to save the game beforehand so that you can get another chance if you

screw up. There is absolutely no help I can give you for this. All I can say is

that try get Zapdos asleep. Otherwise, your Pokéballs will just miss. Once

you're done with Zapdos, take the path to its right and you will find yourself

just outside the Plant. Zapdos is one of my favourite Pokémon, and so I like to

take it out. However, in terms of fairness and fun for the game, I like to wait

until all of my Pokémon are level 50 or over so as to make it still worthwhile

to play. Zapdos can practically blow away anyone at this stage. When you

finally do take out Zapdos (if you do), place Pidgeot in the PC.

                             =================

                             *Cinnabar Island*

                             =================

Go to the Pokémon mansion next to the gym. Enter. On the right side of columns

there is a Moon Stone hidden. You must be on the rightmost of the sides though.

This is the fourth Moon Stone available in the game. Head past the stairs and

head right. Take the left here and look at the statue. There is a secret switch

here, so press it. A room has just opened, but there is nothing inside, so

disreguard it. Go up the stairs now, however. In the room immediately south of

you is a trainer. Fight and defeat it. Fire Pokémon are the specialty used

here. Head up the stairs, pick up the items and defeat the trainer before

heading back downstairs. Enter the room just above the stairs you descended

from and take the stairs you find.

     Follow the path right and enter the first room. Inside is an Iron. Return

outside and use the statue. The door that was once closed will now be open and

the other, which you just came out of, will be closed. Enter the room and take

the former of the two passages. You will find yourself landed in a whole new

area. Battle the nearby scientist and take the path east just after him,

picking up the item along the way, which turns out to be a Carbos. If you

ignore the stairs and follow the path above it, the ledge will land you back

out at the door of the building, so unless you're in dire need of healing, take

the stairs. Follow the left path and you will soon arrive at a lone room. Enter

it, battle the trainer, pick up the TM (14, Blizzard) and press the switch

inside the statue. Return to where the stairs left you and enter the now

unlocked path.

Battle the scientist and continue with your incessant following of the path.

Enter the first room you see and use the switch hidden in the statue. The

second room has a Rare Candy to be found. At the end of the path you will find

TM22, Solarbeam, on a table. The key to enter the seventh gym is in the room

below. Once you have received this, you have my permission to leave. If you

managed to not toss the Escape Rope, use that, but otherwise follow my

walkthrough to leave. Return back along the path and press the switch again.

Return back to the area where you got the stairs and go to the room which you

found along the path. Press the switch inside the statue and use the stairs. Go

up and follow the path, jumping off the ledge at the end. You now find yourself

outside the building. Heal your Pokémon and put away any useless items you may

find yourself with. Enter Cinnbar Island's gym.

The gym leader is Blaine, and the specialty of him and his assistants is fire-

types. The original thing about this gym is that you have the chance to skip

the trainers if so you choose, and have a medium amount of Pokémon-knowledge in

you. The machines in the corner of each chamber will give you questions to

answer. If you get it right, the door to the next chamber opens, and if you get

it wrong you must battle a trainer. It's a good way to test your knowledge,

however, I believe you should fight the trainers anyway. Here are the questions

anyway, and their answers. The answers are in all capitol letters.

1. Caterpie evolves into Butterfree? YES/No

2. There are 9 certified Pokémon League badges? Yes/NO

3. Poliwag evolves 3 times? Yes/NO

4. Are thunder moves effective against ground element-type Pokémon? Yes/NO

5. Pokémon of the same kind and level are not identical? YES?No

6. TM28 contains Tombstoner? Yes/NO

       **=======================**

Blaine - Cinnabar Island Gym Leader

-Ninetails        Level 48       EXP 1830

-Radidash         Level 50       EXP 2056

-Arcanine         Level 54       EXP 2464

Prizes:

-Volcano Badge (Special of each Pokémon raises a little.)

-TM38 (Fire Blast)

-$5346

       **=======================**

Blaine's Pokémon should be a few levels higher than yours (I don't know why,

but in Pokémon Yellow a leader's Pokémon are about 20 levels higher than their

assistants...)  Blastoise should take out the first two without much bother,

but it possibly might run out of HP by the time Arcanine is finished with it.

Charizard would be a good next option, using Slash for full damage. It probably

won't happen like this, but Pikachu would be used next, for me. That is all you

need to know. Blaine is not very tough. Nobody is, actually. Once you win, the

Volcano Badge is yours, along with a nice little TM. Too bad there's only 5 PP

with the move. Go to Fuchsia City once you are ready.

                               ==============

                               *Fuchsia City*

                               ==============

Enter the Pokémon Centre and take HM04 (Strength) out of Ash's PC. Teach it to

Blastoise and return it to the PC. Head south of the Pokémon centre, jumping

over the walls and battling any trainers you may come across. Enter the water

by surfing on Blastoise and battle the nearby trainers. Just head south, but

keep an eye on the western barrier. None of the trainers are hard at all,

Pokémon rarely stretch above level thirty-two. You will soon arrive at an

island, all the same.

                              =================

                              *Seafoam Islands*

                              =================

When you're ready, enter the cave. It'd probably be a good idea to get on your

bike. Just a thought. Walk onto the plateau and take the ladder down a level.

Get off the ledge and take the ladder just above you. Travel east from here,

and fall down the gaping hole you come to. You will find yourself surfing in an

area of water, but being dragged by the current. Land on the flat one-square

space nearby. Search and you will find an Ultra Ball. Get back to surfing and

land on the land a little northwards. Ignore the ladder immediately ahead, in

favour of following the path away south and west. Take the first ladder you

come to. Get on the ledge and follow it around the circle.

        Ignore the ladder and follow the path east and south. You will soon

come to an area with some rocks and two holes nearby. Have Blastoise use

Strength and push the first rock of the two up TWO places. Enter the square,

which has just been opened and push that rock down ONE place. Move it west ONE

square. Leave that rock and push the rock blocking the new area THREE squares.

Push the next rock down ONE square, right into the hole. Return to the second

rock you pushed and push it ONE square west. Then, push it into the hole by

pushing it ONE square south. Jump in one of the holes yourself. Bypass the

first landing and go to the next piece of land. On it is a bird Pokémon. It is

the legendary Ice Pokémon, Articuno. Save the game and battle it. Battling

Articuno is much like battling Zapdos. Very tough. Your best bet is to have it

fall asleep, otherwise it will just evade any Pokéballs you throw at it. Again,

if you like this Pokémon so bad, use the Master Ball to capture it. When you're

done, you now must escape the horrors of the Seafoam Islands. Here's how.

Get back on Blastoise and Surf away from the Island. Land on the first landmass

you come to and take the ladder. Follow the path to the first ladder and take

that ladder. Get on the plateau and take the ladder. Get off the ledge and head

to the left. Go north a bit and get on that ledge. Take the ladder, go south

and you're out. Fly to your next city to heal.

                               ===============

                               *Viridian City*

                               ===============

You might think I've made a mistake, but no, I haven't. There was a gym in

Viridian City, remember? The gym leader has returned and is available for

challenging. Enter the gym and battle each of the assistants. The assistants

mainly have ground Pokémon, but there are some Poison and Fighting types thrown

in there sometimes for fun. Before fighting the gym leader, heal up your

Pokémon. The top-right-hand chamber has the leader inside it is... *SPOILERS*

None other than Team Rocket's Giovanni! Talk to him and battle him.

       **=======================**

Giovanni - Viridian City Gym Leader

-Dugtrio          Level 50       EXP 1638

-Persian          Level 53       EXP 1680

-Nidoqueen        Level 53       EXP 2202

-Nidoking         Level 55       EXP 2298

-Rhydon           Level 55       EXP 2403

Prizes:

-Earth Badge (All Pokémon obey.)

-TM27 (Fissure)

-$5445

       **=======================**

These levels should be roughly what you are, so that's not much of a problem.

Leaders 5-8 have had Pokémon on or about level 50, which is odd. Make sure to

have Venusaur or Blastoise at the top of your list when starting off and use

Surf (Blastoise) or Razor Leaf (Venusaur) and you should take Dugtrio out in

one attack. Persian, as a normal type, has nothing specifically in your party

its weak against, so try Pikachu or Zapdos/Pidgeotto, maybe. Anyone, you

choose, really. Use Charizard for Nidoqueen and Slash her to pieces. Nidoking

has an elemental attack or two, so be careful. Try use Charizard as well,

though watch out for Thunder, as Charizard is partially a Flying type. Rhydon

can be taken out in one go with Venusaur's Razor Leaf, so after that the battle

is over. This is the last badge you need to enter the Pokémon League. You will

receive TM27, Fissure. Fissure is an attack which makes an instant kill, as

long as it hits. It rarely hits, though. Talk to Giovanni again, and he will

tell you he is finished with Team Rocket, and will now dedicate his life to

studying Pokémon.

Go to the Pokémon Centre to heal your Pokémon, and (if you have nothing better

to do) we will now start our journey to Indigo Pleateaux, where the Pokémon

League is situated. Take the road West of Viridian City. If you haven't got it

before, Surf across the small lake and talk to the man sleeping on the ground

to receive a TM (Dream Eater). Continue westward and Gary will soon arrive on

the scene to do a little bragging, with battling on the side. You'll notice him

swear... Tsk tsk... kids these days...

       **=======================**

Gary - En-Route Victory Road

-Sandslash        Level 47       EXP 1641

-Exeggcute        Level 45       EXP 945

-Ninetails        Level 45       EXP 1716

-Cloyster         Level 47       EXP 2044

-Kadabra          Level 50       EXP 1552

-Jolteon          Level 53       EXP 2236

Prizes:

-$3445

       **=======================**

Nothing too hard here. Just combat the elements with their direct opposites.

Kadabra and Jolteon are the toughest, though they are still only mildly tough.

For Sandslash use Blastoise, for Exeggcute use Charizard, for Ninetails use

Blastoise, for Cloister use Venusaur, for Kadabra use Pikachu/Jolton and for

Jolteon use Venusaur. Simple, really. Once you're ready, heal your Pokémon and

continue West until you reach a building. Enter the building. Travel northwards

through the building. Guards will ask you whether you have certain badges. The

last one will let you pass to enter a cave.

                                ==============

                                *Victory Road*

                                ==============

Once you enter, you will find there is absolutely nowhere to go for the moment,

the only path away is blocked somehow. Go to the rock nearby and have Blastoise

use Strength. Push it south one square, and then push it east until you hit the

rocks near the door. Push it north two squares and then east seven squares.

Push it north two squares, east one square and then south one square onto the

spot. If you mess up along the way, just exit Victory Road and come back in,

the rock will be back in its original place. Take the path away anyway. When

faced with the choice of going east or west, go west. Follow the path and take

the ladder up.

Ignore the first rock, but on the second rock, move it one square east and then

three down. Push it east until it gets into the slot. Get onto the ledge and

take that path. Get off the path when you reach the end and take the path north

and east. Take the ladder at the end. **** Move the rock two squares north and

then push it west until it hits the rocks. Then, move it south one square and

four squares west. Three squares south and one east. Return to where you

started with the rock and take the path riding along the ledge. Battle the two

trainers and continue along the path. Push the rock next to the hole into it,

and then jump in yourself. You must push that rock west until it goes into the

slot. Take the ladder in the room that has just opened up when ready. Go north

and take the next ladder. The exit is right by you, so take it. Now, ride north

and you will soon see a building to enter.

You'll notice during the walkthrough of Victory Road, a random collection of

****s. This is to note where I will take a new walkthrough to catching Moltres,

who is in Victory Road. Continuing, walk to where the grove where you put the

rock is. Take the ladder nearby. Walk forward a bit. And there you go. That's

the walkthrough. Have fun! Moltres is the same as any of the other Legends to

fight against. Sleep is the best way to defeat and capture it.

                               ================

                               *Indigo Plateau*

                               ================

This is Indigo Plateau, where the Pokémon League takes place. You will probably

need a little more training before having the ability (and levels) to take on

the Elite Four, so train for about 30 minutes or so before moving on. Victory

Road is a good place to train, as the wild Pokémon are on high levels. Of

course, fighting trainers is better, so any trainers you see, battle them.

Heal your Pokémon and buy a few revival items before entering, as once you

enter, you cannot heal except via items. The Pokémon League awaits you, so

enter the room at the top of the screen. Talk to the trainer (Lorelei) and he

will chat to you for a while before inciting a battle.

       **=======================**

Lorelei - Pokémon League

-Dewgong          Level 54       EXP 2035

-Cloyster         Level 53       EXP 2305

-Slowbro          Level 54       EXP 1897

-Jynx             Level 56       EXP 1644

-Lapras           Level 56       EXP 2628

Prizes:

-$5544

       **=======================**

Lorelei's ice Pokémon are tough, but they'll go down easy if you combat them

directly. Admittedly, you don't really have anything that will completely

combay them. Charizard SHOULD, as a fire Pokémon, but the flying part in him

has him succumb to ice moves. Pikachu, Venusaur and Jolteon are ok to

demostrate the weakness of their water parts, but unfortunately they three of

them loose out when attacked by Aurora or Ice Beam. All you have to do is

battle using any of the previously mentioned and hope they don't use ice

attacks. Jynx is the toughest of the lot, with Thrash and all that. She has

Lovely Kiss too, which has your Pokémon fall asleep, so keep the Poké Flute

ready. Go through the door into Bruno's chamber when you have defeated Lorelei.

       **=======================**

Bruno - Pokémon League

-Onix             Level 53       EXP 1225

-Hitmonchan       Level 55       EXP 1650

-Hitmonlee        Level 55       EXP 1638

-Onix             Level 56       EXP 1296

-Machamp          Level 58       EXP 2398

Prizes:

-$5742

       **=======================**

As you may  be able to pick up for yourself, Bruno uses rock and fighting

Pokémon mainly. The rock ones are easy, just set Venusaur's Razor Leaf on them.

The fighting ones should be tougher, seeing as you have no counter for them.

Blastoise' Surf seems to work really well on them. I don't know why, it

shouldn't, but it does. Anyway, that's what I use. It sometimes takes a second

attack to completely finish them off, but that's not a bother really. Be

careful, however, as Hitmonchan has Thunder punch, which is basically an

elemental mega punch. Machamp even goes down surprisingly well to Surf. Well,

that's fluke for you. In general, however, Bruno is not that strong. Once he is

defeated, you are on to your third of the Elite Four. Heal your Pokémon and

progress to the next chamber.

       **=======================**

Agatha - Pokémon League

-Gengar           Level 56       EXP 2280

-Golbat           Level 56       EXP 2040

-Haunter          Level 55       EXP 1485

-Arbok            Level 58       EXP 1827

-Gengar           Level 60       EXP 2442

Prizes:

-$5742

       **=======================**

This bi-atch is pretty tough. You doubtfully have anything extremely strong

against her, but just make sure to use elemental attacks. Attacks like

Flamethrower, Razor Leaf, Wing Attack, Surf, etc. Physical attacks, as you may

already know, don't effect ghosts. Pidgeot's Fly works pretty well. For Golbat,

use Pikachu and for Arbok use anyone of your choice. Around now is the time to

begin to get wary of the PP you use. You may not have enough should you get to

the final battle. Anyway, once you defeat Agatha, you can pass to the forth of

the Elite Four. His name is Lance, a Dragon trainer.

       **=======================**

Lance - Pokémon League

-Gyarados         Level 58       EXP 2659

-Dragonair        Level 56       EXP 1728

-Dragonair        Level 56       EXP 1728

-Aerodactyl       Level 60       EXP 2596

-Dragonite        Level 62       EXP 2442

Prizes:

-$5742

       **=======================**

Lance, as you may know, is the hardest of the four. Dragons have little that

they are weak to, thus, they are formidable Pokémon. The first, Gyarados, may

be tough, but as he is a Flying/Water type and not Dragon, can be defeated by

Pikachu or Jolteon. Consistent mid-to-high level damage attacks will take out

both Dragonairs. Be wary of the Hyper Potions Lance uses a lot. It is a real

frustration booster, especially when you've just worn down a tough Pokémon. The

dragons have some elemental attacks such as Thunder too, so be careful here.

Blastoise is a good choice, in my opinion. Normal attacks are good, too.

Aerodactyl is partially rock, part flying. Thus, electric attacks don't always

work. Blastoise is a good choice again. Venusaur would just be slain by the

aerial attacks. All Pokémon seem to have Hyper Beam too. This is a great bolt

of damaging energy inflicted on you. Take note that the attack to follow it is

spent recharging.

Once Lance has been defeated, you discover Gary has beaten the Elite Four

before you did. Thus, you'd better hope you have enough strength left for

another battle. Make sure you're ready before taking the next few steps

forward, as once you enter the room you will have to face Gary straight away.

       **=======================**

Gary - Pokémon League

-Sandslash        Level 61       EXP

-Alakazam         Level 59       EXP

-Exeggutor        Level 61       EXP

-Cloyster         Level 61       EXP

-Ninetails        Level 63       EXP

-Jolteon          Level 65       EXP

Prizes:

       **=======================**

Before I go on, please note that this is the selection Gary would have if you

used the thunderstone first, which is what you should have used, if you've

followed my walkthrough. Start with Blatoise again and defeat Sandslash with

Surf. Alakazam is a tough-y. Zados' Drill Peck works well, or Pidgeotto's Fly.

There's nothing you have to directly counter it though. Exeggutor can be

defeated by Charizard's Flametrower. If you're out of PP, try Slash either.

Cloyster can be defeated by Pikachu or Zados' electric element attacks such as

Thunderbolt. Be careful, however, of the fact that both are weak to ice

Pokémon. Ninetails can be countered with Blastoise's Surf. Jolteon is countered

with Venusaur. Venusaur's attacks aren't great when attacking electric types,

so just use the fact that Jolteon's natural attacks are weak against Venusaur

to your advantage.

Once you have defeated Gary, you are carved in stone as the greatest Pokémon

Master on the planet. Remember, this is only a game, though! Anyway, you have

beaten the game... For the moment. Remember, you still have to get all 150

Pokémon. Remember that not all 150 can be caught in Yellow.

After the credits finish, you have one last thing to do. Head to Cerulean City

and go to the top of the Nugget Bridge. Surf in the water nearby and follow the

channel. You will come to a cave. This is Unknown Dungeon. Enter. Go up and get

in the water. Surf down the water passage, ignoring all the paths away. You

will come to the end. Ignore the ladder and walk south and eventually back west

again. Take the ladder.

This next part might be a bit hard to describe. Basically, there's a ladder in

the top left corner of the area – you have to get there. Ignore the first turn

south. Take the second. Take the turn west at the bottom, but ignore the branch

that goes north and west. The path will then turn north. Take the next turn

north. Follow the path and take the ladder. Take the following ladder in the

next area too. Follow the raised path. When you reach the lowered area, go

left. The rest is pretty straight-forward. Walk a little bit, surf a little

bit, walk a little bit more, surf a little bit more. Then, you'll come to a

rock with a Pokémon on it – Mewtwo. Mewtwo is at level 70, and probably one of

the most powerful Pokémon in the game. Most people save their Master Ball for

it, but it's your choice. You'll have a tough time catching it though.

                                =============

                                *Gym Leaders*

                                =============

**=======================**

1. - Brock - Pewter City

**=======================**

Brock is a rock Pokémon trainer from Pewter City, and is the first gym leader

you come across. He has one assistant who only has one Pokémon, a Diglett. He,

himself, has two Pokémon: Geodude (Level 10) and Onix (Level 12). Given how far

into the game this leader is, these Pokémon are pretty tough to beat,

especially considering your range of Pokémon is limited to bugs, Pikachu, and

flying types. Previously in Red and Blue, you could have had Bulbasaur or

Squirtle to combat the rock and ground elements of both Pokémon. Your best bet,

as stated in the walkthrough, is to train a Caterpie into a Butterfree, as the

psychic attack it learns (Confusion) does good damage. You can catch a Mankey

in the road west of Viridian City either, for Fighting types are strong versus

rock elements. Once Brock has been defeated, you are gifted with 1188 of your

finest dollars, TM34, and most importantly, the Boulder Badge. With this badge,

the attack status all of your Pokémon raises a little bit. Also, HM05, Flash,

can be used outside of battle now.

**=======================**

2. - Misty - Cerulean City

**=======================**

The second gym leader you meet in your adventures is Misty, the Cerulean City

water Pokémon trainer. She has two assistants, neither of which are very tough.

Her two Pokémon are Staryu and Starmie, at levels 18 and 21 respectively. The

fact that you have Pikachu is a huge boost, because, as you know, electric

types PWN water type with a vengeance. Surprisingly, however, both are pretty

strong. Again, Butterfree can be used as a backup plan, especially with Sleep

Powder. The Charmander you may have received by now is pretty useless here.

Starmie's Bubblebeam is pretty powerful to all elements. Physical attacks on

Pokémon such as Nidorino and Pidgeotto are the next best thing you'll have to

use. But, if your Pikachu is at a high enough level, you shouldn't need any

others. A back-up plan could always be to catch a grass Pokémon such as Oddish

from the wild grass North of Cerulean City and train it up a bit. Once Misty

has been defeated, you receive TM11, $2079 and the Cascade Badge. With the

Cascade Badge, all Pokémon up to level 30 will obey your command and HM01, Cut,

can now be used outside of battle.

**=======================**

3. - LT. Surge - Viridian City

**=======================**

Lt. Surge is exclusively an Electric Pokémon trainer. He is the third you will

meet along the way. He has three assistants, none of which will cause any

threat to you. IN Pokémon Yellow, Surge's Pokémon have been changed to fit the

show, a level 28 Raichu is all he has. It's a bi-atch to beat, though. It seems

to be able to counter anything you might throw at it, as with a mass of

physical attacks as well as electric ones, its high levels can hurt you hard.

Mega Kick and Mega Punch are two of the physical attacks in his arsenal. The

only break you will get from a physical attack is when it uses Growl. Use this

moment to inflict some real damage on him. Once Lt. Surge has been beaten, you

will receive the Thunder Badge, TM24, and $2772. TM24 is Thunderbolt. The

Thunder Badge allows you to use Fly outside of battle, and aswell as that, you

can use Fly out of battle.

And by the way, there is a puzzle to get into Surge's chamber. As taken from

the walkthrough:

"You see all those bins littered around in a pattern? Right, there are

switches hidden inside each of them. Go around looking at each bin and when you

find a switch, the next one is in a container in a one-bin radius of the one

the switch you already found. When you've found the second, the door opens and

you may challenge Lt. Surge. For those that don't get it, it does like this:

  0    0    0    A    X

  0    0    0    B    C

  0    0    0    0    0

Say if switch one was at X, then the next switch would be at either A, B or C.

Get it? Great."

**=======================**

4. - Erika - Celadon City

**=======================**

Erika is the fourth of the eight gym leaders you face in Pokémon. She is a

grass trainer by choice, and she has seven assistants. Her three Pokémon are

Tangela (Level 30), Weepinbell (Level 32) and Gloom (Level 32). If you trained

Charmander well, it should be able to give you a good hand in defeating Erika.

Pidgeotto is also good, if you have taught it to learn Fly (Find HM02 from road

west of Celadon). Tangela is tough, as it uses Constrict and Bind, slowing up

your progress, but not dealing too much damage. All you need to defeat Erika

are decently-levelled Pokémon and not to fuck-up when attacking. Not much luck

is needed. Tangela is the only problem you should have. You receive TM21, $3168

and the Rainbow Badge for defeating Erika. The Rainbow Badge allows you to use

Hm04 (Strength) outside of battle and all Pokémon up to level 50 will obey you.

TM21 is Mega Drain.

**=======================**

5. - Koga - Fuchsia City

**=======================**

Koga is the fifth gym leader, a poison Pokémon trainer. He has four Pokémon,

three Venonats (at Levels 44, 46 and 48) and one Venomoth (Level 50). The first

two Venonats are easy, though it gets slightly tougher for the last. Have

Charizard burn them like the bugs that they are. There is little EXP gained

from defeating the three, sadly. If Charizard faints while fighting Venomoth,

have Pikachu use electric attacks on it to combat its flying element. Each

Pokémon has some sort of Psychic attack, so be wary. Also, Venomoth has the

Toxic attack, a sort of poison which inflicts more damage per turn as the

battle lengthens. Once that Koga swine has been defeated, you receive a Soul

Badge (Defence of all your Pokémon), TM06 (Toxic) and $4950.

**=======================**

6. - Sabrina - Saffron City

**=======================**

Sabrina is pretty tough. She is the sixth of the gym leaders, and trains

Psychic Pokémon. She has seven assistants, none of which are any comparison to

Sabrina. Her three Pokémon are Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam, all at Level 50.

Abra is easy to take out, as it has Teleport as a lone attack, and it cannot be

used in a trainer battle. Kadabra is easy too, but not too easy. The levels may

be slightly too high, but I guess you'll have to live with it. You don't really

have much to counter Sabrina with, I guess, unless you have a Ghost Pokémon.

Butterfree could be useful... Jolteon's Pin Missle is good though. Physical

attacks aren't great. Once Sabrina has been defeated, you get the Marsh Badge,

TM46 and $4950. TM46 is Psywave. The Marsh Badge allows you to use HM03, Surf,

outside of battle. All Pokémon up to level 70 will now obey you.

Again, there is a puzzle to get into Sabrina's chamber. Taken from the

walkthrough:

"Here is a map for you:

 _______________________________________________

|      *1*      |      *2*      |      *3*      |

|               |               |               |

| 3           2 |    6    1     | 6           9 |

|               |               |               |

| 5           4 |    4    7     | 3           7 |

|_______________|_______________|_______________|

|      *4*      |      *5*      |      *6*      |

|               |               |               |

| 6           2 |               | 3           9 |

|               |          1    |               |

| 1           7 |               | 2           4 |

|_______________|_______________|_______________|

|      *7*      |      *8*      |      *9*      |

|               |               |               |

| 3           9 |               | 3          6  |

|               |               |               |

| 2           4 |           9   | 7          8  |

|_______________|_____|   |_____|_______________|

The numbers at the top represent the trainers, and also represent the number of

that chamber. There are four tleport squares in every chamber, except for 5 and

8. Five is where Sabrina is, eight is where you exit. The rest should be easy

to understand once you get inside and mess about."

**=======================**

7. - Blaine - Cinnabar Island

**=======================**

Blaine is the Cinnabar Island gym leader. He uses fire element Pokémon. The

story goes that Blaine was lost in a mountain range and it was dark. The

legendary fire/flying Pokémon, Moltres appeared to him and helped him find his

way home and he has loved fire Pokémon ever since. Entering Blaine's gym, you

have the option of bypassing the assistant fights by answering Pokémon trivia

questions. Blaine's three Pokémon are Ninetails (Level 48), Rapidash (Level 50)

and Arcannine (Level 54). Doubtfully would your Pokémon be at such levels at

this time, because mine weren't when I wrote the walkthrough. Blastoise is the

main Pokémon to use, but next use Charizard for its Slash attack. Your Pokémon

team as a whole should be able to defeat Blaine without too much bother.

Blastoise should be able to kill at least two of Blaine's Pokémon. Watch out

for Arcanine's Fire Blast attack, however. The Volcano Badge (Special increases

a little), TM38 (Fire Blast) and $5346 are yours after defeating Blaine.

**=======================**

8. - Giovanni - Viridian City

**=======================**

Giovanni is the last of the eight gym leaders you must face in Pokémon Yellow,

and if you defeat him you can then enter the Pokémon League. He is the leader

of Team Rocket and in Pokémon Red, he was the shock leader of this gym. But, of

course, seeing how you've probably already seen the show, you knew this. For

the first part of the game, Giovanni was not in his gym in Viridian City, but

only returned after his plans for the Game Corner, Mt. Moon and Silph Co. were

ruined. He mainly trains Ground Pokémon. His Pokémon are Dugtrio at Level 50,

Persian at Level 53, Nidoqueen at Level 53, Nidoking at 55 and Rhydon at Level

55.

Have Venusaur or Blastoise at the top of your list and use Razor Leaf or Surf

to defeat Dugtrio. Use anyone for Persian. Charizard will work for Nidoqueen

and Nidoking, though be careful as Nidoking has a couple of elemental attacks.

Rhydon can be defeated by either Venusaur or Blastoise. Once Giovanni is

defeated, he will decide to dedicate his life to studying Pokémon. You receive

the Earth Badge (All Pokémon obey), TM27 and $5445. TM27 is Fissure, an attack

which will knock-out a Pokémon in one hit. It's hard to make it hit with it,

though, thus it's pretty useless and consumes moves best spent on other moves.

8)   CODES / TIPS
*********************************************************************

WARNING NOTE: These codes may mess up your game, as the game wasn’t
really designed for them. Some of them may not work.

Clone Pokemon
To begin, you must have two Game Boy linked. Game Boy A has the
Pokemon to be cloned (I cloned Mewtwo, but any one will work), and
Game Boy B will have the Pokemon to be erased because they will get
the cloned Pokemon (a weak Pokemon like Magikarp will do. They're
easy to catch and worthless unless evolved). Game Boy A will be the
first to enter the Cable Club, and the first to trade or this code
will not work. Game Boy A will trade the good Pokemon, and Game Boy B
will trade the bad one. After Game Boy A gets the bad Pokemon the
screen will say "waiting". Game Boy A will turn off the Game Boy the
second "waiting" clears off the screen. Then Game Boy B's screen will
say "trade complete". The screen won't clear, so you'll have to turn
the Game Boy off. Then, restart the game and you'll have a cloned
Pokemon! The weak Pokemon will have disappeared because it never
really traded (or didn't finish trading).
NOTE: This may cause your saved game to screw up!

Fight Land Pokemon On Water
To fight land Pokemon on water, go to the eastern side of Seafoam
Islands. Surf up and down along the eastern coat to do that. The
Pokemon that you fight are from the area you last visited. This even
works with Safari Zone!

Catch Pokemon Better #1
To help increase your chances of catching a Pokemon, press B + Down
when you use a Poke Ball or press B + Up when you use an Ultra Ball.

Catch Pokemon Better #2
Here's another easy to catch Pokemon! When you throw any type of Poke
Ball, hold A and B for an easy catch.

Stat Evolution Tip
The earlier that you evolve a Pokemon, the higher the two of their
four stats will be when they gain a Level than when you don't evolve
them. Here is how that works, I'll use Exeggutor as an example (I'm
not sure if what I'm about to say about his stats are completely
true, but close enough). Say as an Exeggcute his Attack goes up by 1
point for every Level-Up. Whereas Exeggutor's Attack will go up 3
points per Level-Up. It accumulates more Attack points and will make
him stronger. I KNOW Exeggutor's Attack and Special develop faster
than Exeggcute's. It's a perfect pay off. If you keep Exeggcute the
way he is he'll learn a lot of moves, but evolve him early and you'll
get really high stats. What 2 areas develop faster differs Pokemon to
Pokemon. I've checked this out with others too (Arcanine, Starmie,
Raichu), and it stays consistent.

Helpful Pokemon Combo
Here is a helpful combo in battle using the abilities "Leech Seed"
and "Toxic". This combo was tested on a Bulbasaur and its evolutions,
but it should work for any Pokemon with Leech Seed. First, use Leech
Seed and have it connect with the enemy. Then use Toxic (It is found
in TM 06 from Koga). Doing this will cause more damage and Leech Seed
will return more HP even though it drains a little from the enemy. I
received about 50 HP off a single drain of a Leech Seed when
performing this combo.
