Mewtwo, a newborn Pokémon opens his eyes in a laboratory, finding a dozen people in lab coats. They are scientists who have given birth to him, by genetically cloning cells of the Legendary Pokémon Mew. Mewtwo's birth is not natural, but artificial. Mewtwo is confused. The scientists wanted to research Mew, and Giovanni found out about their cloning skills. Giovanni agrees to fund the project only if the scientists clone Mew. Mewtwo thinks that the scientists don't care for him and wants to be free and outside, so he uses his powers to destroy the island. The boss of Team Rocket, Giovanni Mewtwo takes because they agreed to be partners. Whilst teaching Mewtwo how to control his powers, Giovanni says that Mewtwo serves him, so therefore Mewtwo is not equal to humans. Mewtwo wants to be alone because he feels betrayed, so he destroys the Team Rocket base.
Overlooking the sea on some grassland, Ash and Misty wait for Brock's stew to be ready. Misty decides to help Brock. Pikachu finds Togepi tottering towards the edge of a cliff, and rushes to stop him from falling off the edge. Togepi stops centimetres away from the edge, but Pikachu topples in. The cliff is not too deep, and Pikachu crawls out. A man then appears, and challenges Ash to a Pokémon battle, which Ash accepts. During the match, Mewtwo watches Ash battle. Ash wins. Suddenly, a Dragonite flies by, and drops off an holographic invitation, and a beautiful lady appears telling him about a strong Pokémon trainer. Ash does not know the sender but he accepts the invitation to New Island with other Pokémon trainers. Team Rocket are nearby and see the invitation.
A heavy viscous storm is terrorising the sea, making it impossible for any kind of ship to travel across it. The friends learn that many other Pokémon trainers were invited by this stranger, and that a female doctor is missing from the Pokémon center. Trainers try the raged sea, with the help of their Pokémon. A boat appears, and Ash and friends accept a free ride to New Island. However, it is Team Rocket in disguise. Ash is in high spirits, while Pikachu is scared of sailing. A huge wave hits the boat, and reveals Team Rocket. Another wave hits the boat, and they all get thrown into the sea. Misty uses her Staryu, and Ash uses his Squirtle to get back to the surface. They swim to New Island, where they have been invited. Team Rocket also reach the island using Koffing.
Only three other trainers have made it. The woman from the holographic card is also there, and tells Ash to release his Pokémon. The trainer that invited Ash and the other trainers reveals himself to be Mewtwo. Mewtwo does not need the assistant, and he releases her from his psychic powers. She collapses, and Brock realises that it is Nurse Joy missing from the Pokémon Center. He says that he only needed her for her knowledge of Pokémon.
Trainers then decide that they can capture Mewtwo, but he beats the Pokemon easily. He then leads the trainers and their Pokéon to a battling stadium.
Team Rocket manage to get into the building and enter into a laboratory. They find many huge tubes in there, and some contain Pokémon. Jessie sits on the machine and turns it on. Team Rocket see a video message from a scientist that created Mewtwo. They wonder what the machine is, when suddenly, something grabs one of Meowth's hairs. The machine in the main lab starts to clone Meowth, and a clone is stored in one of these tubes.
Mewtwo explains that he wants to make his own world, by destroying the humans world. He says that not even Pokémon will survive because they have shamed themselves by working for humans. Pikachu tells Mewtwo that they work together and that they are friends, but Mewtwo has none of it and attacks Pikachu.
Mewtwo has made much more powerful copies of these Pokemon, and they start to come to life on Mewtwo's command. The tubes open, and reveal a Blastoise, and Charizard and a Venusaur. They head to the battling ground, guided by Mewtwo's powers. Mewtwo explains that he altered the genetic code of the three original starter Pokémon, and made them evolve into much stronger Pokémon.
Two other trainers that made it to the island challenge the Venusaur and Blastoise copies with their own Blastoise and Venusaur. He wants to prove that clones are so much stronger than originals, like Mewtwo a clone. Mewtwo leads them to a battle arena and Root Root (The trainers Venusaur) starts off the battle. The cloned Venusaur beats it easily, so the next trainer sends out Shellshocker (Blastoise), and Mewtwo uses his own clone. Mewtwo's Blastoise wins, so Ash sends out Charizard, but is then beaten by Mewtwo's clone. As the victor, Mewtwo sends out his own Pokéballs, which capture all the Pokémon.
Ash tries to help Pikachu, but fails. Ash holds onto the ball and is then sucked into the cloning room. The cloning machine clones all the Pokémon, but malufunctions when Ash goes into it. All the original Pokémon are released from Mewtwo's Pokéballs.
Copies of the Pokémon are sent to the field under Mewtwo's control. Ash and Pikachu follow with all the trainers original Pokémon. Ash tries to stop Mewtwo, but is then balsted away. He land on a bubble and is confused. Mew has saved him. Mewtwo then attacks Mew, because he wants to show that he is more superior. Mewtwo blocks all the cloned Pokémon's specials abilities and commands them to fight with brute force.
Team Rocket's Meowth is talking to his copy, and explains that they should start looking at what is the same instead of what's different. Nurse Joy, Brock and Misty are very unhappy about the situation, and Ash runs to the middle of the field when he sees Pikachu not fighting back against its clone. Ash is then hit by the attacks of Mewtwo and Mew, and is turned to stone.
Pikachu sees that Ash is hurt, and runs to the middle of the field and tries to revive him with his electric attacks. When he uses all of his energy, Pikachu starts to cry. All the other Pokémon are watching and also start to cry, and Ash is brought back to life. Mewtwo then realises that Ash valued all Pokemon, even if they were cloned. He realises that it does not matter how you were born, it is what you do with the gift of life that determines what you are. He has seen that Pokémon and humans can be friends.
Mewtwo now understands, and recalls all his Pokémon using his powers. He can now believe his life, and realises that it is valuable. He heads off and starts looking for a place to live.
Suddenly, Ash and his friends are returned to the port, and are totally unaware about what had happened. Mewtwo had erased all of their memories about him and the clones. Ash runs out to the port and thinks he sees Mew, his second legendary sighting. Minutes later, the storm is over. Team Rocket who are left on New Island, which is now just a tropical island, decide that they need a vacation, and chill out! |
