Tony M.'s Trip To and Through LVRS
December 3, 2006 - 5 weeks Post Surgery

Maybe I was one of the lucky ones but I had no real pain after or since the surgery.   The only time I did hurt was when the chest tubes were removed but that was only for a second.   The incision is healing nicely.   Its still a bit sensitive when whatever Im wearing rubs against it but it doesnt hurt and just tingles.   The strange part of the healing process is I get all sorts of strange sensations where the sternum was opened and the cutting was done. Im told this is the nerves and muscles healing.   The feeling in the sternum area is sort of weird but not painful. It feels as though little things are crawling around in there but its all part of the healing process.

It may be too soon to say for sure but I think this surgery has worked for me. Extreme SOB in the past left me gasping for breath and I needed a few minutes to recover after a short walk, flight of steps or incline.   Now, I feel very mild SOB after exertion but I recover quickly.   I still have the O2 for now.   The therapist and doc recommended I use it now when exercising just to compensate for my weakened condition.  Its been a little more than 4 weeks since the surgery and Im looking forward to how Ill feel with each passing day.

And the last one, December 3rd

One thing I neglected to mention in previous messages is I did have a problem sleeping.  You need to sleep on your back at least during the first few weeks after surgery to avoid putting any undue pressure on your chest.  I was forced to during the first few weeks because I didnt have the strength to turn over on to my side.  I never have nor will ever be able to sleep properly on my back.  You will eventually fall asleep but only for short periods.  Not the most restful sleep but better than no sleep.  I can now sleep on my side and I am getting close to sleeping through the night.  Its a cheap price to pay for the benefits of the surgery
