Relevant Work Experience Details :

a. Design , Development implementation and maintenance of CONCERT ( an OLTP based Passenger

Reservation System with very large distributed databases )

CONCERT is a Railway Reservation system developed under client server architecture using distributed transaction

processing and distributed data base architecture. Indian Railway passenger train network is one of the largest systems

both in terms of geographical expense as well as passenger traffic. It supports variety of train types ( Mail, passenger,

Super fast, express, Rajdhani etc. ), Train gauges ( Broad, Meter, Narrow ), classes of travel, coach types etc. The system

has a complex tariff calculation sub system which caters to a variety of concessions, different payment modes and

other complicated business rules. CONCERT when fully operational would enable issues of reservation tickets from any

reservation counter, from any station to any other station, on Indian Railways, irrespective of the location of the

reservation counter and the originating station of the train.

The project covers development and implementation of an OLTP system for passenger reservation

connecting 5 regional databases into a distributed data base network with the aim of providing access

to all inventories by any user of the system. As the CONCERT is a high throughput OLTP application

with stringent response time requirements, all critical subsystems like Resource Manager

( Database Engine), Forms Manager and Recovery manager had to be tailor made for this application.

Over 100 man years of person- effort   and an investment of over Rs. 6 crores ( Over $ 3 m.) has

already gone into the project. CONCERT now handles over 10 million passengers a day covering

some 600 locations with 3000+ terminals deployed.

b. WEB ENABLING OF CONCERT APPLICATION

CRIS has now implemented and hosted Indian Railway’s own web-site, namely www.indianrail.gov.in and offers

PRS enquiries on the internet namely, Accommodation availability Enquiry, PNR Status Enquiry, Train Schedule

Enquiry, Fare related enquiry, Trains between pair of stations.

1. The site also provides information about the rules and regulation for passenger booking, refunds, and other

services available in general.

2. So, with e-commerce getting more matured and with effective cyber laws in place, the system has been

enhanced to provide reservations through the internet.

3. This has been done jointly by CRIS and IRCTC. (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) and the

web-site is http://www.irctc.co.in/

 c. NATIONAL TRAIN ENQUIRY SYSTEMS (NTES)

National Train Enquiry  System  is a reliable centralised information system which provides up-to-date and accurate

information to the passengers regarding:-

Arrival/ Departure  of passenger trains including Expected time of arrival (ETA) of trains.

Platform berthing of passenger trains

These informations are made available to the user through Display Boards, Interactive Voice Response System,

Public Address System, Face to Face Enquiry, CCTV and it is proposed to make it available on the  Internet in

the next phase.

The above information is collected from stations, control offices and other database administrators.

The project started as a pilot project and was implemented in Aug. 1998. In the phase II, the software has

networked all 5 servers running the NTES application.

This system has been web-enabled and the web-site, namely www.trainenquiry.com gives the position about

the running of trains

d.  IMPLEMENTATION OF   PRS DATA WAREHOUSE FOR INDIAN RAILWAYS

Currently, a PRS Data Warehouse is in place and it archives around 300 GB of passenger data and is configured

on a Sun 880R machine with data on storage box , FC4710 from Clarion and server process running on

Pentium IV machine. around 100 enquiry terminals have been configured across the country and has been

successfully  handling the queries  since March 2003.

Top-down architecture

  • provides systematic solution

  • minimizes integration problem

  • data marts supporting subject oriented analysis follow from the Data Warehouse

  • supports profound and prolific data modeling.

Features of Data Warehouse

    Analytic Logic

    • The analytical logic is built using ASIQ.

    • Dependency of application logic is woven around it by writing stored procedures

    • By separating analytical logic, it is now possible to test this logic with out involving other tiers (making testing much easier).

    • The capabilities of ASIQ availed using platform-specific solution features to ensure application design remain portable.

  •

  • Web and Presentation Layer

    • ASP and HTML to leverage the benefits of scalability and modularity

    • ASP and HTML are used as presentation tools for Internet users

    • Breaking the application into components has given us magnificent control over layers

    Extraction, Transformation and Loading tool

    • In-house Extraction, Transformation and Loading tool

    • Customized for Extraction Transformation and Loading (ETL) data from flat files to relational

      tables

    • Used features of UNIX OS to automatically schedule loading and summarization of data in

the various tables of data warehouse

    • Summarize and aggregated data is rolled up using stored procedures so the design is

flexible to accommodate more dimensions and measures

    • Design highly scalable more clients can be added without paying extra licensing fee unlike

    • the license fee attached with each user as it happens in case of Data Warehousing tool.

This has been web-enabled and now has over 30 types of queries for the Indian Railway. The same can be accessed over

the url:-http://www.trainenquiry.com/

e. Implementation of Un-reserved Ticketing System (UTS)

UTS is the Computerized System for the issuance of unreserved tickets for Indian Railway. Unreserved ticketing

constitutes major component of the overall ticketing in Indian Railways. UTS is the complete solution to provide

computerized unreserved tickets to railway passengers from dedicated counter terminals.

The UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) application which keep track of the issued un-reserved tickets,

is the main application to run on this platform. This system issues tickets based on preconfigured fares, which is

synchronized from the central database to the local embedded database. The system is capable of working in

stand alone mode for a minimum interval of two days, in case of a link failure. It can do this because when it loses

the server link it will store/cache the transaction data to the local storage, which is a flash memory card . It continues to

do this until the server link is back online. When that happens, the Smart Client sends the stored data, in the order in

which it was received, to the server where it will be posted to the database like any other transaction.
