Trancers (1985)

Cast:Tim Thomerson, Helent Hunt, Art LaFleur, Telma Hopkins,Michael Stefani

Tim Thomerson stars as Jack Deth, a cop from the future, who goes through time to protect the ancestors of three government officals (The ones who run the country) from an evil criminal named Whistler (Stefani) who uses hypnotic powers to brainwash the weak minded into doing his will, however this leads him to 1985 where he takes the form of his ancestor Phillip Deth (Played by Thomerson) , he also enlists the help of Lena (Hunt) who helps him fight the hypnotic criminal, in what is the best Band effort ever made.  Sure the elements of
The Terminator are stolen but this offering brings up enough new ideas to be almost on par with it's inspiration. Plus Thomerson is very good in the role adding intellegence and cynical humor to the part.

Trancers
is one of the most compulsively watchable films ever made.  Believe me when I tell you that I have seen it at least 12 times, each time it never gets tiresome and the ideas and futuristic settings just make this quite enjoyable.  It's all because of Tim Thomerson though.  With someone like a typical muscle man this would be just a good Sci-Fi/Action hybrid but with Thomerson the movie gets great mileage out of showing Thomerson use intellegence and his one-man army skills and still end up in harm's way.  This is an element that makes this movie so enjoyable.  Also there are great novel touches which are admittedly not very well explained but nonetheless still surprising and interesting.  For instance the elements in which Tim Thomerson goes back in time, is explained by the fact that you can only go back by family member. So this of course implies that Thomerson is inhabited the body of his great, great grandfather. Also noted that this provides an intriguing setting as well as lots of humor.  Such as when Thomerson's partner (Art LaFleur) comes back as a 12 year old girl. Best of all is when Stefani comes back as a police chief, to which he then uses the police force to round up Thomerson, Hunt and the person they protect.

These are all ingenius plot threads wrapped together in a complex yet never too complex story, the only complaint is that it runs only at 76 minutes, I for one wanted to learn more about the future and more science and the works about this world, in which Thomerson frequents. Despite that though
Trancers is one of the best B.movies made and well worth watching. Indeed over and over again. D.Charles Band****
