| Born Losers (1967) Cast:Tom Laughlin,Elizabeth James,Jeremey Slate Laughlin stars as a tough vietnam vet who dispatches evil bikers by the hundreds, when they pick a fight with him and his new girlfriend, in the first Billy Jack film which became a cult classic among movie goers when the sequel Billy Jack came out. I haven't seen Billy Jack so I have to judge this as a stand alone film and thankfully it turned out to be alot more entertaining then I thought it would be. It's full of action, Laughlin is quite likable in the lead role and he makes for quite an intreresting action star. Certainly it comes from the same school of politics as Death Wish and Dirty Harry but it also seems more balanced by it's point of view. Secondly it never preaches, it just gives us a hard edged story that's punctuated by brutal violence at a fast clip. Indeed Born Losers gets high marks just on energy alone. Sure the movie hasn't aged as well as Death Wish or Dirty Harry but Born Losers is quite an impressive effort. D. Tom Laughlin *** |
