For the first three months of this year some 21 hundred applications have been filed by state police.

For all of 2001 48-hundred gun permit applications were filed.

In January of 2001, state police processed 361 applications. A year later, the January figure increased to 851.

The application process, which includes local, state and federal background checks and an eight-hour National Rifle Association safety course, takes about two months.
