Below are some pictures of the ACT 2001's run on the Permanente Trail. We made this run as a day trip from our Ruby Lake base camp. The trail was tight with alders, especially with the wider 80 Series cruiser. After about eight miles of listening to the branches scraping along the sides I put in a CD and turned up the volume. The scrapping didn't seem so bad when all I could hear was Carlos Santana's guitar licks. After the alders, the trail crossed a washed out section on a steep side hill. We broke out the shovels and turned this impassable section into a fine Alaskan highway. It was a good thing too, since slipping off into the canyon below would have been a very bad thing. There was another interesting rocky section to cross. It is caused by winter runoff washing the road out, but it wasn't too bad. In fact, it would have been fun if this section was longer because it was a nice break from the tight alders. The trail finished at a beautiful mountain stream with panaramic views of the surrounding peaks. The best part of the day had to be the weather and scenery. It was absolutely beautiful! I included a couple of pictures of the "road" back to our Ruby Lake base camp. This proved to be a fun four mile run itself, especially after a day or two of rain. We had plenty of stories to tell under the tarp around the fire. |
