Knik Glacier Trail

updated August 14, 2001
We just had to drive to the Knik Glacier outside of Palmer. It didn't matter that July was the wettest on record or that Mark hadn't seen the water this high for years. We all wanted to ford the river and cross the beaver ponds.

The trail was a blast and we were fortunate enough to a someone testing the water for us. Usually this was done by Mark or Bret in their chest waders (the water quickly exceeded the height of my hip waders). However, sometimes a fearless cruisernaut would plunge into the murky water to test the depth. This resulted in a severely flooded cruiser and a route through the pond no one else would dare attempt.

The payoff is worth it because we were able to get very close to the glacier. First we "rallied" across open barrens for a few miles. Very fun cruising through dry washes over miles wide river bottom.

Of course someone had to test the glacier silt for traction - unsuccessfully, so the winches got some work. On the way out, it seemed the water had actually risen during the day. Lot's of fun and the end of the ACT 2001 event.
