We connected with Paul, a friend of Katherine's who lives in Juneau. He showed us around town a bit then took us on a "skiff" ride to his cabin on the Taku river. It was 50 miles from Juneau and took about four hours to get there. The challenging part was crossing the bar below the glacier. Although the river is miles wide it is only inches deep in places making navigating it difficult. This obstacle effectively keeps many boats from the upper portion of the river.

We passed one place on the river that is visited by many tourists, the Taku Lodge. They reach it by float plane taking off and landing on the water. I snapped at couple pictures of the planes before we headed further up the river to Paul's cabin.

There were at least six glaciers along the way, the largest was the Taku Glacier. This is the same one we landed on a few years ago during a helicopter flight seeing tour. Now, in addition to flying a helicopter to a glacier, we have hiked, driven, kayaked and now "skiffed" to glaciers!
