Membership Information and FAQ
Man At Arms
1. What physical requirements do I have to meet to be a man-at-arms?
Only YOU know your physical limitations.  A man-at-arm needs to be able to walk for long distances, stand for long periods of time, safely be able to handle a musket and the musket drill, and deal with high heat and humidity safely.  Running may also be involved.

2.  Do I need to acquire everything before I can join the unit?
No.  The 84th 10th coy 1st bat will assist you in any way we can to get you in the field, but you must cooperate with us in also working to get your kit together, finding sleeping arrangements, and maintaining historical accuracy.

3.  I belonged to another unit and still have their uniform.  Can I use that?
It depends.  Please contact the unit, or meet with them at an event to determine what part of the uniform can be used for the 84th.

4.  I'm black.  Can I still join?
Yes.  The 84th cannot discriminate on race, color, or ethnicity.  All we ask is that historical accuracy is maintained.  The 84th DID have FREE black men in the unit.

5.  I'm a woman.  Can I still join?
Yes.  The 84th cannot discriminate on gender.  All we ask is that historical accuracy is maintained.  Women are welcome to be a man at arms.  Women who are men at arms are expected to maintain the SAME physical requirements as the men, and must make every effort to diminish her feminine appearance and look and portray a man at arms while she is in uniform.  Female men at arms CAN return to a female interpretation after hours.  We ask that interpretations are maintained throughout the weekend.

6.  What is the age limit for men at arms?
You must be at least 16 years of age to be a man at arms.

1. What is a camp follower?
A camp follower is anyone who is not a man at arms or officer.  For more information visit:
www.geocities.com/piseag/campfollower.html

2. Can I be a camp follower and a man at arms?
If you join the 84th 10th coy 1st bat as a man at arms, you are expected to maintain that persona.  Women can return to female interpretation after public hours.

3. I'm a man, can I be a camp follower?
As a military unit, a man is expected to portray a man at arms.  Men can be camp followers if they follow historical accuracy and significants (surgeon, clergy, etc.)  The 84th cannot discriminate on cross-gender interpretations.  If a man wants to portray a woman, he must make every effort to look like a woman.  He must maintain the persona throughout the weekend during public hours.  He must be accompanied by a man (or woman portraying a man).  Also, look into joining the Behind the Lines of the BVMA.  www.bvma.org  There are more opportunities for interpretations there than within a military unit.

4.  Your history talks of married women in the regiment.  What about unmarried women?
The 84th cannot discriminate on marital status.  We ask that historical accuracy is maintained.  Any woman portraying a campfollower must be accompanied by an of age man (husband, son, brother, friend, cousin, etc.)  Unaccompanied women CAN portray a man at arms and are free to return to a female interpretation after hours.

5.  I'm an unaccompanied woman, but I don't want to be a man at arms.  Can I still join?
Unaccompanied women who wish to portray women are welcome to join the Behind the Lines of the Burning of the Valleys Military Association.  This is a specific working unit set aside for anyone not portraying a man at arms.  There are more opportunites for interpretations through the BTL than there are in a military unit.

6.  What about children?
Children are welcome to join the 84th 10th coy 1st bat so long as they are acompanied by a parent or approved guardian who is also in the unit and maintaining an accurate persona.
