Walt Slagle is a second baseman who may Pittsburgh
may be able to add to their collection of 20 homerun hitters. |
The In's and the Out's of the Pirates
2007 Season
A look at who's new and who left the Pirates this
winter.
Catcher
In: Ed Mahoney
Out: Herb Palmer
Herb Palmer was signed by Baltimore during the off-season and is
expected to share the catching with Gene A. Stuart. Mahoney, who
is 34 years of age, is a former All-Star with a Texas Rangers. Last
season he hit .324 and knocked in 95 RBI's. Ernie Thornton, who
split time with Palmer last season, will be Mahoney's backup.
2nd Base
In: Walt Slagle, Reggie Bryant
Out: Ben Perry
Ben Perry hit .287 in 470 at bats but he struggled defensivly. He
became a free agent as he turned 27 and was not picked up by anybody
and remains a free agent. Walt Slagle, fresh off his World Series
win with San Diego, takes over for Perry. Slagle is capable of hitting
around the .300 mark and cranking 20 homers out but he was also
picked up for his defense, an area which |
hurt the Pirates
last season. Reggie Bryant is another second baseman signed, last
year was his rookie season with the
Cincinnati Reds where he hit .282 and did not make a single error
after playing in 85 games.
Pitchers
In: Chris Dolan, Tom Willis, Steve Cain, Charles Chouinard
Out: Bill Piazza
The only pitching staff regular to leave Pittsburgh was reliever Bill
Piazza as he was lured to St. Louis with a 1 year contract worth $200,000.
The Pirates were unable to land a high-priced, big-name pitcher but
they did pick up a few that will contribute. Steve Cain is a left
handed starting pitcher who for most of the season was a member of
one of baseball's best starting rotations in Toronto. Cain had a 10-7
record in 22 starts. Two former Giant pitchers have been brought into
the mix, Tom Willis had an 11-9 record with a 4.01 ERA and Charles
Chouinard recorded an ERA of 2.63 in relief. Chris Dolan played last
year in Oakland, and will start the year in AAA. |
Charles Chouinard's 2.63 ERA out of the bullpen wasn't
enough to find the Giants playoff spot in 2006. |
