It Was In The Cards

June 2008

St. Louis, MO - It seems that the cards dealt to St. Louis by their division rivals was a pair of aces in Steve Cain and Pat Miller as the Pittsburgh Pirates completed the sweep of the World Series Defendanding champs in a three game series at Busch Stadium. The Pirates are now 5-1 against the Red Birds this season.
The final game of the series was quite the pitchers duel, Pirate starter Steve Cain went up against the Cardinals number one man and former Cy Young award winner Jack McMillian. Cain went 8 innings of one-hit shutout baseball and gave way to Hughie Waters and Ty Chapman in the 9th inning to finish things off. McMillian was on top of his game was well, also going 8 innings and gave up one run in the fourth inning when Herb Palmer singled Don White home.

Steve Cain has won 10 games over the last year and a half with the Pirates
Pat Miller catches Cardinal Willard Cruz looking The second game of the series featured and return for one player of some sort. Rookie pitcher Pat Miller was traded to the Pirates from St. Louis just before the season started and has been the most realiable starter on his new team. Miller didn't end up with the win but he still pitched well, scattering 6 hits and 2 walks over 6 innings while only giving up 2 runs. George Lewis ended up with the victory in the 3-2 victory for the Pirates.
So far this season Miller is 7-2, tied for 4th in the National League, and sports a 2.95 ERA which also tags him at 4th. The 24 year old pitcher never pitched in the majors during his stay with the Cardinals. Steve Cain hasn't gotten off to as good as a start that Miller has, going 4-4 with a 4.35 ERA. Cain started his career in Toronto with the Blue Jays and was signed by the Pirates before the 2007 season. He went 6-6 in his first season as a Pirate and had a 3.72 ERA.
