The Extension Period

The period between the World Series and when trading opens is used to do pick the PTBNL and offer contract extentions to your teams 27 year olds and other players who have had their contracts expire. And since this years crop of rookies is nothing to call home about and someone tried to name their whole A-Ball team "Joe Garbage" the only thing exciting is to follow these days are the contract extentions.

In the HHASL the rules state that once a player turns 27, that team's GM has only three options for what they can do with that player: give them either a 5 year $10 mil contract, 3 year $8 mil contract, or let them become a free agent. So far this off season only one 27 year old player, pitcher Dan Young of the Seattle Mariners, has given a $10 mil a year contract. Young led the Mariners pitching staff in last year with 16 and had a 3.53 ERA. The Mariners also gave Joe Parker a new big contract giving him the $8 over three years.

The Mariners weren't the only team handing out $10 mil contracts as the Anaheim Angels offered a 3 year extension to Tracy Mora where he will bring home $11.04 mil a season. Mora was a member of the American League champs but got injured early in the playoffs. And finally the Montreal Expos, who made a run at being the first team to win the National League East that isn't called the Philadelphia Phillies, gave Drew Bert $10.4 a season for the next two years. Drew won 16 games for the second place Expos.

Other teams that threw out the big money were the St. Louis Cardinals who gave slugger Joe Joyce and 14 game winner Tim Rowe who both got the $8 mil over three season deal and Boston was the other team to offer two players the eight for three deal extending the stays in Boston for Tim Porter and Bill Kreutzmann.

Tim Rowe $8/3 years

Johnny Blackwell hopes to get the Dodgers back in the World Series after signing a 3 year extension
