Palmer Could Face Charges

October 28, 2006

San Diego, CA - Herb Palmer could face assault and battery charges after last night he allegedly attacked an unidentified reporter in a post game interview after game 5 against the Padres. Herb Palmer was the Pirates
starting catcher at the start of the season but lost his starting role to Ernie Thornton.
Witnesses reported a pushy reporter asking Palmer questions about his recent play and losing the starting role and it seemed to have angered the Pittsburgh catcher who had been known for having a temper. The tape that the reporter's was recording the interview on was recovered.

Q: So Herb, tough series wasn't it?
A: Yeah, well you know, the Padres have a great team, they could win this whole thing.
Q: How'd you do in this series? hmmm, says here you hit .227 and had a passed ball.
A: Well there you go, that's how I did.
Q: Well let's go back in to the season. You were the starting catcher, then you lost you starting job to the younger Ernie Thornton. How did that make you feel?
A: You gotta take one for the team. That's what I did.
Q: That's got to hurt though, eh?
A: How about I hurt your face!
Q: Hey, easy now, I'm just getting what the people want to hear.
A: I'll show you something that the people want to hear.

That was all that recorded on the tape before Palmer broke the tape recorder.
Palmer, who turns 27 over the off-season and will be a free agent, and probably will not receive an offer for the up coming season from the Pirates. Assault and battery is a misdemeanor charge and Palmer could face up to 90 in jail or have to sign a contract with the Chicago Cubs.

Palmer saves one from going behind him earlier this season.
