Pirate PalateFried Apple Pies

Tyler Dellinger

For as long as I can remember, my family and I have been enjoying fried apple pies at least once every week, for every summer I can count. This colossal calorie dessert has been handed down to my grandmother for four generations and still doesn't seem to be worn-out because, just as the when it first began, everyone still enjoys eating one or two.

Although my grandma is the current master of this recipe, the treat doesn't start with her. It starts in her front yard with my grandpa's many apple trees ranging from Stayman apples to Golden Delicious and to his newly grafted June apple trees, which I'm looking forward to trying out this summer (2008).

Other than the fact that this recipe has been handed down from generation to generation, there isn't any real other significance. It's just the simple fact that everyone enjoys them.

Sometimes, with the help of my mom, the fried pies are accompanied with some homemade vanilla ice cream, which not only is a great way to end a meal, but comes in handy on a hot summer day.
