Pirate Palate - Sweet Potato Pie - Shayquanda Daniels

Pirate PalateSweet Potato Pie

There is no sweet potato pie like my grandmother's sweet potato pie. I prefer this pie over any other pie I have ever tasted in my whole entire life.

My grandmother has cooked almost all of her life. She has cooked many dishes and baked cakes, pies, muffins, and breads. Although all of these desserts are delicious, the pies are the best. My grandmother is known for her pie-making. When my family has cookouts, there is always a request for her delicious pies. She bakes about ten to twelve pies at a time.

My entire family can cook. The men always cook the meats at our family gatherings. The women cook the vegetables and bake the desserts. Each woman brings at least three dishes with them. They spend the whole night cooking their foods, and all of it is ready by the next morning. My great-grandmother is a cook, too. She had fourteen children, and all of them can cook. She taught them how to cook everything. My aunts are wonderful cooks. My grandmother cooks on a daily basis, but her pies are only cooked on special occasions.

We have gatherings at my great-grandmother's house on holidays and events such as baby showers, graduations, and birthdays. Lots and lots of people show up. There is food for everyone, and the extra is given away to anyone who wants it. Food takes over the whole kitchen. We even have to put food in the living room. There is hardly any place to sit. Sweet potato pies are delicious, but there is not a word that describes my grandmother's pies. The taste is just unexplainable!

My grandmother puts time and effort into making them. When she bakes them, the whole house is filled with a sweet cinnamon scent that makes your mouth water. My sister and I anxiously wait for her to finish baking the pies. Forty-five minutes later, the pies are done, and I eat at least four slices. I adore the taste of it, especially when it is fresh out the oven.

Sometimes, I help my grandmother make the pies because I love to eat the mixture that is left in the bowl. I help her clean up any spilled ingredients and I wash the dishes. I do not mind helping my grandmother, just because her pies are so delicious. I keep asking her to teach me how to make them, but she tells me that I will never know how to bake them like she does. I wish someday I will know.

My family wants my grandmother to start selling pies because we all know that she will make lots of money off of them. She is thinking about the idea, but she does not know for sure. The idea of a sweet potato pie bake sale sounds great. Therefore, if she sold pies, then she would not have to worry about having money to buy ingredients. She could have the pie sale in our front yard.

My grandmother's sweet potato pies goes great with collard greens and baked ham. That is what she and I eat it with sometimes. The majority of the people in my family eat it with anything. I love the pie by itself. No matter what it is eaten with, it is still delicious. Maybe one day my grandmother will decide on selling pies.
