Pirate PalateHamburgers & French Fries

Samantha McLemore

Growing up in my grandmother's house was a lot of fun. On Sundays, she'd plan to have soup on Wednesday, but she wouldn't go to the grocery store to get the supplies she needed. Instead he would take anything she had in her refrigerator or her cabinets: hot dogs, corn, beef broth, broccoli and cheese, anything. And it was actually decent-tasting.

My mother was busy raising three children. Her son went into the Marine Corp, and then she was my Girl Scout leader, drove a school bus, delivered mail, took my sister and me to dance classes every day. So, she didn't have time to cook so she would let us cook our own food.

Like my grandmother, I would just pick up random things and dump it into whatever I was cooking. My mother would monitor me and wrote down all of my recipes. My daddy fell in love with my hamburgers. My mother added the onions to the recipe when we had a horse trail-ride at our house about five years ago. They have been a family tradition since.
