Pirate Palate - Meatloaf - Nick Vinson

Pirate PalateMeatloaf

Nick Vinson

I have been eating my mother's meatloaf since I can remember. It has always been one of my favorite dishes that my mother has made. Every time that she fixes it, I can't wait to eat it. She knows that it's one of my favorites, so when I come home from college she always fixes it for me.

I'm never in the kitchen when my mom prepares her meatloaf. Usually my little brother is. Sometimes I get a sneak of her putting the ingredients into the bowl when she is mixing everything, but I usually end up leaving and not really watching what she does. When it's in the oven, we can smell it through the whole house.

The last time I came home from college, she made it for me. It tasted so good to me, probably because I hadn't had it in such a long time. I don't see myself ever getting used to eating school meatloaf like I'm used to hers. Just being able to taste all of the ingredients that she has put into her food makes the wait for it all worth it. The meatloaf at school isn't nasty, but it doesn't have much flavor either.

I don't think I could ever really compare anything to my mom's meatloaf. I really like my grandma's meatloaf also. Hers is homemade, which I enjoy, but I don't know if I would compare them to each other. For sauce, my grandma uses tomato sauce and ketchup. But my mom uses the spaghetti sauce that comes in the glass bottle. It gives it a whole new flavor. It really puts it above a lot of other meatloaves, including restaurant meatloaf, that I have tasted. I know she got the recipe out of a book a long time ago, but it's like it's her own because she has been doing it for so long.

My brothers and I all have different things that we like that my mom makes. Mine is the meatloaf, of course. My one brother, who is ten, has his favorite, which is spaghetti. My other brother, who is five, likes my mom's chicken. They don't really eat meatloaf like I do, but it doesn't matter to me 'cause it's just more for me.
