Pirate PalateMacaroni & Cheese

Jazz Joyner

One of my favorite foods is my grandmother's macaroni and cheese. I do not know what it is about her macaroni and cheese, but when she cooks it, I cannot get enough of it. I have even had friends who have tasted it hassle me about when is she going to cook it again. She cooks it all year round, but it is usually the best around Thanksgiving. That's when it hits peak flavor and aroma.

Usually around Thanksgiving turkey is the main dish, or the highly expected part of dinner, but at my grandmother's house it is the macaroni and cheese. All the aromas that are floating around the air somehow just amplify the taste and smell of my main objective: the macaroni and cheese.

Everybody in the family knows about this macaroni and cheese. Even neighbors ask for plates around Thanksgiving. Every year, somebody I have never seen before makes their way to my grandmother's house and the first thing I see them reach for is the macaroni and cheese. It has gotten to the point where she has to make two batches just to make sure everybody gets some. This is the only dish that does not make it to leftovers the next day.

So as you can see, my grandmother's macaroni and cheese has quite a reputation in my family and with the neighbors. And its reputation is not going to do anything but grow. At first, many people did not believe why one of my favorite times of the year was Thanksgiving, but when they tasted my grandmother's macaroni and cheese it became their favorite time of the year, too.

I do not know what I would do if in some strange case my grandmother did not cook for Thanksgiving. But I think she feels it is a duty to feed her family and to see everybody eat and be happy together. No matter who you are, you canot resist my grandmother's macaroni and cheese once you have tried it.
