When football season finally kicks off, the smell of my Uncle Bill's chicken wings travels through the air. Nothing bonds the family together more than football trash-talking and delicious chicken wings.

His wings are just the basic frozen chicken wings from the grocery store...with a twist. He mixes his own creative sauce to slather on the wings, which makes them unlike any other wings around. He also has specific times for rotating the wings and how long to cook the wings.

My Uncle Bill first thought of making his own chicken wing sauce after he went to a bar to watch football in downtown Pittsburgh in the early 1980's. In the early 80's, chicken wings were not as popular as they are now. The bar was serving chicken wings with their own creative wing sauce and he fell in love with the idea. He talked to the man on the grill to get an idea of what ingredients to use.

When he finally came up with his own sauce, it became a family tradition. Even his neighbors talk about his wings as if he was a famous chef. Whenever we watch football, whether it be Monday night or Sunday afternoon, Uncle Bill's chicken wings are near. He taught my dad, grandfather, and his own son the art of cooking wings to make sure we had his masterpiece year round.

When we eat his wings, there has to be sides of some sort to make it a complete package for watching football. Usually a small caesar salad, Lays chips, and an ice cold cup of Coca Cola will come along with the wings. Well, for most of the family, it's a cold Coors Light, but for me, it's still a Coca Cola.

The main reason why his wings are my favorite is because of the family element added to a simple food item. I have so many memories throughout my childhood being with the family, watching football, and eating chicken wings. My Uncle Bill still lives in Pittsburgh, so I rarely get to eat his own creation. Whenever we drive up to Pittsburgh or have our family vacation at the beach, he's always sure to make a batch of his famous wings for everyone. Luckily my grandpa lives close and makes some pretty good wings also, so they tide me over until my Uncle Bill makes a visit.
