Pirate PalateProseus Meatballs

Courtney Proseus

My brother and sister, along with many others outside the family, have always expected my dad to bring his "famous" meatballs to special occasions. After every event, the compliments poured in, and there never was a single meatball left over. I, however, took longer to fall in love with this wonderful dish.

I cannot remember when I learned to love my dad's yummy meatballs, but it was a little after everyone else. What held me back was that I was not a huge lover of barbeque sauce, but when I finally decided to try these cheesy meatballs with an open mind, I was just as crazy about them as the others.

My dad makes his meatloaf very similar to his meatballs. In fact, that is how he came up with the recipe. He decided to experiment with his meatloaf recipe and made meatballs in barbeque sauce and added the A1 steak sauce to the meatballs as well. That very simple change that he made turned into another one of his wonderful recipes.

The meatballs are also my favorite because it is something I can help my dad with and it has turned out to be our bonding time. Neither my brother nor sister have ever helped him with this dish, so it's special to us both. While we make meatballs for whatever occasion, my dad will tell me stories and help me with knowing how to handle the large knife we use when we slice our own cheese.

These meatballs are not only good to eat, but easy to make. And they bring back fond memories.
