Every year for my birthday, my parents have insisted that it consists of three things: friends, family,
and delicious food. Following their request, every year since I was born, we have a summer cookout at my house with friends and family in August. Each cookout has a different style and theme of food decided by my mom and Yia Yia (“grandmother” in Greek). I would be surprised each year by finding out the different theme my parties would be. After moving into my family’s new house 7 years ago, my Yia Yia thought that our house had a Mexican style and wanted my mom to plan a Mexican themed party for my birthday that year.
My Yia Yia is a woman that has many great qualities, especially with cooking and coming up with new recipes. As my mom and her planned out the menu in July, she decided to try a new dip that would be tasteful and addictive. Yia Yia would not tell my mom what she had planned and only said that it would be “great.”
The day of the party was fun getting ready for all of my friends and family to celebrate my birthday! As I was preparing for people to arrive, all of the appetizers were set out. I noticed this light orange dip surrounded by carrots and tortilla chips. Immediately I was intrigued because I had never seen this before. After taking one bite I found myself indulging in the spicy yet cool dip all throughout the night. Every guest that had tasted it was asking who made it and trying to get the details.
After my birthday, my mom insisted that Yia Yia give her the recipe for future parties and events. At first, my Yia Yia would not share the recipe, so my mom tried to recreate it. Every time was a disaster, and the ingredients weren't right. My sister and I told my Yia Yia how many times my mom had tried to make this dip and how unsuccessful she was every time. I am still unsure of why she decided to give my mom the recipe, but I would like to think it is because of my mom's determination to get it right.
From my eleventh birthday until now, my mom and I make this easy dip for all my friends and family. My Yia Yia has since passed away, but we always think of her when making this quick snack. Every time I visit home my mom makes a fresh batch of dip that I bring back to school and share with friends on my hall. They have asked for the recipe, but I'm going to wait a few months before giving it to them, keeping the true tradition of the creator. |
