Gollum
Also called: Smagol, Stinker/Slinker, Trahald
Age: (during the War of the Ring) 589 (approximately)
Race: Hobbit of the Stoor strain
Parents: ???
Played by: Andy Serkis
Gollum is first introduced in The Hobbit as a strange creature living within the caves of the Misty Mountains. For centuries he has held the One Ring, allowing it to corrupt his mind, and control him completely. But the Ring leaves him, and comes to Bilbo. Sauron uses Gollum by torturing him, to find the location and name of the new Ringbearer (although the details are quite vague, with only two words of importance deciphered Shire and Baggins).

A villain only by corruption of his mind by the Ring, Gollum is literally ripped in two. One half his original self, Smagol is a pitiful being, who seems to stay with Frodo, because Frodo is the first person to ever treat him kindly. Smagol (who Sam refers to as Slinker) acts as a guide for Sam and Frodo on their way to Mordor. However, his corrupted side, Gollum (called Stinker by Sam), is still present in his mind. Both sides of Gollums mind desire the Ring which they call their Precious yet they fight continually over how they may retrieve it. Eventually, Gollum wins over Smagol, and he betrays Frodo, by leading him through the lair of the spider-creature, Shelob. But Gollum is almost the hero of the day. When Frodo refuses to cast the Ring into the fires of Mount Doom and uses it to make himself invisible, Gollum somehow finds Frodo, and bites off his finger. In his fit of joy over regaining the Precious, Gollum falls off the edge and into the fires, destroying himself and the Ring.

The Balrog of Moria
Also called: Durins Bane, Flame of Udn
The Balrog is a demon of fire and shadow, found in Moria. This balrog was probably the last remaining balrog in Middle-Earth. The balrogs were Maia demons, in the service of Morgoth (the master of Sauron). The Balrog of Moria lie sleeping in the depths of the earth and was awoken when the Dwarves mined too deeply in search of mithril.

While they are travelling through Moria, the Fellowship encounters the Balrog. Gandalf confronts it upon the Bridge of Khazad-dm. He casts it into the deep, but the Balrog uses its flaming whip to grab onto Gandalfs leg and pulls him down with it. The Fellowship believes Gandalf to be dead, however, both Gandalf and the Balrog survive the fall. Gandalf pursues the Balrog to the peak of Zirakzigil, where he casts the Balrog down.
