Naraku, he's the evil villain but what'll we do without him? Surprisingly, 'Inuyasha' is the only manga where there is no particular character that I hate or dislike. I really don't have anything against Kikyou or Naraku (and they do seem to be two of the most disliked characters from the manga). I can think of characters from other manga more despicable than these two. Anyway, instead of not disliking Naraku, I kind of like him and sympathise with him. I mean, Naraku exists because of Onigumo's feelings for Kikyou. I know that this argument will sound very dodgy due to the fact that one can point out that Naraku and Onigumo are two different and separate beings. But until Naraku can severe all ties with Onigumo, I will continue to think of them as one. I've always had a soft spot for villains who become villains because of unrequited love. It's especially touching when after 50 years, he still harbours feelings for Kikyou, he spies on her, he gets jealous when she's with Inuyasha, he doesn't feel like killing her and he only tries because he knows that she will kill him when the time is right. You may say that it's not love at all, it's lust. But does lust last for 50 years? However, I do not intend to go too deep with Naraku's love life. I just want to say that he is the villain, many want to see him dead, so do I but only because his death means Miroku will live, and if it weren't for him, Inuyasha wouldn't have all this problem with Kikyou, Miroku wouldn't be cursed, Sango wouldn't have her whole village killed and her brother wouldn't be manipulated. But I reckon that the Inuyasha group also have a lot to thank Naraku for. If it weren't for Naraku, they may never have met and in my opinion, they have a very beautiful friendship going on which may after all be worth all the pain and suffering each of them has experienced. And for us fans, if Naraku didn't exist, there may be no 'Inuyasha'. Yep, shutting my trap now!
Miroku, Shippou's babysitter? It is my firm belief that Miroku was first created to be Shippou's babysitter so Takahashi-sensei can concentrate on the progress of the Inuyasha-Kagome relationship without having to worry about the whereabouts of the little fox. Like, in the early stages of Miroku's appearance, I believe there has been an increase in Inuyasha-Kagome scenes since the arrival of Shippou. We see quite a fair bit of Miroku and Shippou in the background spying on them but fundamently, Inuyasha and Kagome were 'alone' in the sense that they can behave as no one was watching. I know that Shippou does deliberately give I and K time to themselves but this only happens later when their relationship has advanced to the stage that they can be considered as a 'couple' (their relationship is still unstable due to the Kikyou factor but I think it's pretty obvious that Miroku, Sango, Shippou, Kaede and Myouga think of them as an 'item'). Takahashi-sensei may have realized the potential Miroku has to the plot (his traumatic childhood, his complex nature, his way of speech also indicates that he is a lot more than what he seems) and pleased with his unexpected popularity that she decided to create a love interest for him and thus the birth of Sango (yes, I am one of those people of strongly believe that Miroku and Sango will end up together). So now, when there is an I+K scene, Miroku and Sango take care of Shippou, and when there is a M+S scene, Inuyasha and Kagome become the baby-sitters. It works well, don't you think.
Everything on this page is naught but my opinion, I believe that everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. If you do not agree to what I have said here, that's fine with me and if you would like to argue or discuss anything or to point out that I have gotten a fact wrong, feel free to email me.
Miroku and Sango Yes! I love these two! I used to like Inuyasha and Kagome but that was before these two came into the scene. They are so cute together! I think they really do deserve each other and sometimes when my brain is warped from studying for more than ten minutes at a time, I'd start thinking about them and worrying about their future. Why? Well, I worry about whether they'll live happily ever after (I'm putting my money on Kikyou finally merging with Kagome and Inuyasha somehow managing to cross time to live with her in her world). Although Miroku and Sango are like a comedy duo, there is an air of tragedy surrounding them, more so than I+K because somehow I cannot imagine either of them dying. But for Miroku and Sango, there seems to be a high probability that one of them would have to live without the other. I guess the most obvious would be Miroku being consumed by his void and leaving Sango all alone to raise their child (who would not have the curse because Inuyasha would kick Naraku's head in soon after Miroku's death). Another possibility would be that Sango would offer to bear Miroku's child because he may die anytime soon and she wouldn't like to see him go without an heir. Now, a pregnant Sango is a vulnerable Sango and Naraku would use this chance to do her in and she would die in childbirth leaving Miroku alone to raise their child (and Inuyasha would kick Naraku's head in soon after Sango's death). I don't know why I'm writing this (actually because I studied for about eleven straight minutes and my brain needs a diversion to stay sane). I don't want either of them to die but having one or both of them dying would make it even more beautiful (huh?). Let me explain, tragic lovers seem to be the ones who captivate our attention and fascinate us the most because they demand our pity and we mourn over their tragedy (take Romeo and Juliet for example). Sorata and Arashi come to a tragic end in the X movie (I don't know the ending of the manga). Mum and I watched 'Life is Beautiful' last Friday night and we debated on why it was such a good movie. I believe that Guido's death was part of it. If Guido had lived, then we are left with a warm fuzzy 'awwww' feeling and leave it at that. But he died, so what do we do? We ask ourselves over and over again 'why?', 'It's too cruel!', 'What a shame, what a pity!', 'I don't want him to die!' etc and it'll stay in our minds for the next few days. But what does Guido have to do with Miroku and Sango? Nothing, really, maybe I just wanted to mention that I did see that movie and liked it. Hmph, am I ranting on insanely for too long? Well, I'll stop after saying just one more thing. I believe that Miroku has asked Sango to bear his child in a totally different and more sincere way than when he asked Kagome and various other women. In the chapter where Miroku and Sango go off alone to fight that demon in the mountains, he gave her a small string of rosary beads to protect her. There seems to be two theories to when Miroku received his air-rip. 1. He was born with it. 2. It developed after his father died. Now I am going with the first theory and I think that the rosary beads he gave to Sango were the same ones that sealed his void when he was a baby (because babies are so much tinier than a fully grown man) and he was saving them for the next generation. By giving them to Sango meant that he wanted her to be the mother of his child. I am going too far with this theory? Well, I am slightly insane so I have the right to go to far and to talk endlessly about nothing. That's it.
The adult and chibi versions of certain characters Has anyone ever notice that the chibis of some of the characters look a little too much like their full-grown version, down to the clothes and the hair style (I'm talking about Inuyasha, Miroku and Hiten here). Yeah, I know they're supposed to look similar because they are the same person, only at different times of their lifespans, but still. Ten or so years (with the last few being those of puberty) must have taken some toll apart from making them taller and less chubby. I remember when I was around six or seven years old. My hair was short and untidy and my mum made most of my dresses (which meant fluttery collars and frilly multi-layered skirts). I wore these home-made dresses a lot and they were nearly all of them pink or some other sickeningly bright and cheery colour (I hate pink by the way, never liked it in the first place and please do not mention the pink flowery border I had up in the first two weeks of this site otherwise I'd go shoot myself). Being dressed this way when one is six or seven is okay because everyone is cute at that age, except maybe Jaken. Now that I have evolved into an overgrown thug, God forbid if I still wear frilly pink dresses. My hair is fairly long now (though still untidy because I condition too much which makes it rather heavy which is good because that means I can get away without brushing my hair in the morning which I don't often do because I can hardly ever find the hairbrush). I have long traded in my frilly pink dresses for darker, plainer clothes obtained from *gasp* a shop! I look nothing like the cute little girl in the photo album. See, changing hairstyles and dress-senses are all a part of growing up (and searching for one's identity). So don't the above mentioned 'Inuyasha' characters change? They have the same hairstyle and the same outfit that they had ten years ago! Well, except for Miroku because I would guess that he was only a novice back then and not qualified to wear the dark robes he wears now. Inuyasha has the identitical red outfit he had when he was a kid. Why? Who made his clothes? Are they magical and have the ability to expand to the right size to fit their owner? Or did parents back then just decide on the look that their children will have as adults and it's set for life, the poor children cannot change even the colour of their robes even if they desperately wanted to. If this is the case, then did Sesshoumaru have the fluffy thing and the armour since he was a rugrat? What kind of parents dress their kids in full armour complete with swords? And Rin, is she gonna have that bunch of hair sticking out from the side of her head when she is sixteen? It may look cute now but I doubt it will be so when she is taller and slimmer.

My love-hate relationship with Kagome In the beginning she was my favourite heroine at the time. She was so different from Miaka (Fushigi Yuugi) and Usagi (Sailormoon) which was an immense relief because I was really getting sick of girls who are stupid, klutzy and gluttony but still have the ability to defeat the enemy and land a hunk of a boyfriend in the process while the other smarter, more able girl didn't (I'm talking about Yui in FY and practically nearly every other sailor scout in Sailormoon). It just didn't make sense. So Kagome was the cream among the curd and tops in my books until I made the realisation that she is awful to her family. Well, in the anime she has a friendlier relationship with her mother but in the manga she didn't really seem to be willing to give the time of day to any of her family members. I have yet to see her actually look at her little brother Souta and just talk to him. She's usually glaring at him across the dinner table or making grumpy comments about Inuyasha with her back turned towards him or scolding him over something. It's not fair to Souta because he's a very nice kid and obviously likes his sister very much seeing that he's always in sitting on her bed spending his time with her and trying to talk to her. She has pretty much the same attitude towards her grandfather too. I would have been okay with her nastiness to her family and attribute it to her state of being a teenager if she wasn't so damn nice to everyone in the Sengoku Jidai. She dotes on Shippou, respects Kaede and sympathises with poor, sad characters like Jinenji. Like, I understand people who are nice to other people but nasty to their own family if their own family is nasty as well (like Tooru's aunt's family in Fruits Basket, they all need a good hard slap from Tooru's grandfather). But when one has a nice family like Kagome's, I get really peeved. I see it as being pretentious. And then there's her treatment of Kouga. Dear oh dear! Kagome knows how Kouga feels about her and she knows how she feels about Inuyasha but she is still so nice to Kouga, siding with him in his every argument with Inuyasha. It's almost as though she's leading him on, saving his affection for her just in case Inuyasha decides to choose Kikyou. Why couldn't she just tell Kouga that she likes Inuyasha so he can get over her already? The sooner the better because the pain wouldn't be so bad. Of course, I don't blame her about Hojo, he's just thick. By this time, along with the appearance of Sango, Kagome's popularity with me has dropped significantly. But I like her again now, especially in the anime, because, as someone in my ML has said, she is the biggest Mirosan fan out there. Being a Mirosan fan myself, I think I can forgive her for her although I do feel I will never like her as much as I did before again.
