Ashbourne Cup Camogie Final

UCC 2-3 UCD 1-5

UCC recorded their 28th Ashbourne Cup success after they defeated UCD by the narrowest of margins, in the final at Dangan Sportsfield, Galway, on Sunday 20th February, 2000. The Cork based students had a great start with a goal from full forward Una ODonoghue and a point by Criona Harte.

UCD hit back with a Caoimhe Harrington point but a goal and a point by Siobhan Sexton stretched UCCs lead to 2 2 to 0 1. Harrington added a point midway through the half for UCD before a long range free from midfielder, Aine Codd, ended up in the net to reduce the gap to three points.

The last point of the first half played in truly wretched conditions came from Harrington once more to leave the interval score at UCC 2 2, UCD 1 3. UCD reduced the deficit after 42 minutes through Sile nic Coitir, but eight minutes later, Criona Harte had a critical point for UCC. UCD, the conquerors of holders, WIT in the semi final, had the games last point from Harrington, but it was not enough and the Cup went back Leeside after a two year interval.

UCC advance to second round of Ashbourne Cup

UCC 5 8 Athlone IT 0 8

UCC advanced to the next stage of the Ashbourne Cup with a big win over Athlone Institute of Technology at the Mardyke, Cork on Saturday 5th February 2000, but the scoreline does not do the losers justice. The losers got off to a good start with a point from Catriona Hennessy but then UCC got into their stride and after nine minutes led by 1 2 to 0 2, the goal coming from a close in free by Cliona Harte which she rifled to the back of the net. Another goal by Una ODonoghue in the 11th minute put the home side in the driving seat but it was still all to play for in the second half after UCC turned over leading by 2 4 to 0 6 at the break.

When Athlone started the second half in determined fashion and, had cut the deficit to two points, 2 4 to 0 8 in the 40th minute we looked set for a good finish. However, it was not to be as UCC upped their game to completely dominate the game for the remainder of the half. UCCs main strength was in attack where Una ODonoghue and Criona Harte were in brilliant form while Cork senior player Sinead OCallaghan and Galway star Therese Maher had some great battles with OCallaghan.

In defence Naoimi Treacy, at full back for UCC found Catriona Hennessy quite a handful, and although Hennessy was her sides top scorer she never gave her a chance to goal. Others to stand out in defence for the home side were Derval Quigney at right back, and Sinead Buckley at centreback. Tina Roche had an excellent game at midfield while in addition to those mentioned Ruth Cahalan had a good game at right half forward. For Athlone, Fiona Healy and Sinead Burke in the half back line played well while Aine Hillery and Michelle Glynn tried hard at midfield.

Scorers:
UCC:
U. ODonoghue 3-1, C. Harte 2-4 (1-2 frees), S. OCallaghan 0-2, E. Burke 0-1.
Athlone I.T. C. Hennessy 0-5 (0-1 free), T. Maher 0-2, F. Healy 0-1.
