U16 NewcastleWest Tournament:

Newtownshandrum V Ballygran
14th July 1999 @ Newtown

Under pleasant weather conditions, Newtown U16 camogie team played Ballygran in an entertaining match. The game produced passages of lively and clean camogie, with Newtown leading all the way. Newtown opened their scoring beginning with a long clearance from Aine Kelleher gathered by Niamh Bowles who pointed. Good centrefield work by Helen Curtin and Trish O'Callaghan ensured a good supply of ball to the forwards who availed of their chances. From a throw in Niamh Bowles charged through the Ballygran defence and scored a point. Aine Kelleher again soloed through and a great pass to Niamh Bowles who finished it to the net for Newtown's first goal.

Good goalkeeping by Mary O'Mahoney denied Ballygran a goal. With twenty minutes gone Newtown were ahead 1-2 to no score. Hard work by Clara Clarson at half forward resulted in Trish O'Callaghan making a fluid movement from midfield to the forward line where Jennifer O'Brien set up Niamh Bowles who was denied by the crossbar for her second goal. The Newtown half back line of Norma O'Leary, Aine Kelleher and Sinead Herlihy performed well under pressure before the half time whistle. The half time score was 1-3 to no score.

On the resumption a good clearance by Sinead Herlihy who stole the ball from Ballygran's Alison White passed to Trish O'Callaghan who went on a penetrating solo run through Ballygran's defence opening up the front of the goal to admit Niamh Bowles for her second goal. Ballygran's persistance of a score was denied by the full back line of Grace Finn, Sheila O'Regan and Miriam Giltinane. Following a long puck out Aine Kelleher's clearance set up Niamh Bowles for her third goal to complete her hat trick. Helen Curtin quickly followed up and scored a point three minutes later.

Newtown had the better of the exchanges in the early stages of the second half due to the activities of Jennifer O'Brien and Carol O'Regan. Anna Curtin and Maria O'Meara came very much into the picture and gave Ballygran's defence many anxious moments. A determined Ballygran side saw Sinead McAuliffe score their first goal, and again Sinead followed up with a well taken point. Five minutes later and a successful solo run by Alison White set up Sinead McAuliffe for her second goal.

Gina O'Leary and Lorie Clarson were now introduced in the Newtown side and combined well. Jennifer O'Brien fouled on the 45 was duly pointed by the accurate Niamh Bowles. Trish O'Callaghan fouled in a dash across the goalmouth was once again pointed by Niamh Bowles to edge Newtown's lead. Aine Kelleher then following a searing run up the middle of the field scored a magnificent point. Ballygran were pressing strongly at this stage but could not score again due to the efforts of Mary O'Mahoney in goals.
