Feline Immunodefienciency Virus: FIV attacks a cats' immune systems, producing a slow developing immunodeficiency disease that results in chronic secondary and opporunistic infections.  Various cancers may develop.  FIV infection is lifelong, but may cats can live a long and happy life even with FIV.  Most infected cats are intact tomcats or cats who fight frequently.  This disease has a more difficult time passing from cat to cat.
Parasitic Diseases:

Fleas:a common parasite.  adult fleas feed on warm blooded animals.  They cause irritation, possible allergic reaction, and may be able to transmit  disease to your cat.  The life cycle can be several months long, and immature stages can hide out in places like bedding, carpeting, and shaded areas.  In small kittens or ill cats a heavy flea load can cause severe anemia.

Other parasites: such as intestinal roundworms(hookworms and ascarids) can be avoided with proper sanitation and worming programs.
