The design took almost entirely the second half of the 50's, being ready to test the prototypes in 1960. Krauss-Maffei was the company to build the Leopard1 MBT, while MaK had to deal with the specialised units. The first ready-for-combat units were released as late as 1965.
The Leopard 1 is armed with a 105 mm L7 rifled tank gun. The following versions were equipped with the same gun and powerpack, being much improved with a new welded turret. The latest versions, leopard 1A5, fitted a computerised fire control system. Also, those are equipped with NBC, fire detection and supression system, day-night vision equipment, and deep fording kit.
