First effective use of the Helicopter as a weapon goes to the Korean War, but the bulk of the task of making an effective weapon of the chopper took place during Viet-Nam war, where the complex texture of terrain demanded new solutions. The chopper developed then its capabilities in most different roles, succesful en every one of them. The helicopter carried troops to the battlefield, evacuated casualties during combat, supported friendly units with machine gun fire, attacked the enemy when possible, performed recon missions gathering intelligence which saved lives, and so on. The chopper really implemented a revolution in modern warfare. It allowed to deploy light units inside enemy territory at much less cost than a paratrooper drop or gliders' landings. Just its flying capabilities multiplied the light infatry's range, now they can appear behind enemy lines, hit, and dissapear like a ghost. Or keep the objective supplied by choppers. With the evolution of the choppers towards different lines, appeared heavy helicopters with huge cargo capability, strong enough to lift and deliver small armour, and fast, stealth, lethal choppers with a wide weapons range, capable of hitting any target or targets with demolishing power. Now the atack choppers have missiles for everyone in the battlefield, their favourite delicatessen being any armour the enemy could deploy. All this whitout even seeing any enemy targets. The objective's information can be supplied by ground units or satellites. The Chopper just have to be hidding by some hill, miles away, and release its firepower without exposing itself to enemy fire. All this in theory, of course.
This is not the right place and time to present a little history of tthe development of the chopper and how it evolved to be the most lethal weapon on the actual battlefield, nevertheless is our intention to make this as soon as possible, you know how this things are. Instead of this, we better present a short intro about how they operate and the tactics they use to do so.
