Hello uli, Miguel, ngayon lang ako nakaupo upang makapagsulat tungkol sa piyesang ito na noong nakaraang linggo ko lang natapos. Nagsusulat kasi ako ng screenplay, at yun ang dahilan kung bakit di ako makapaglaan ng mas mahabang panahon sa 'king mga art pieces.
Pero heto, ako'y nagpapatuloy sa aking mga eksperimento sa line photograph. Ang narito'y isang line photo ng iyong Mama noong early '90s sa harap ng bintana at tabi ng dalawang payong na nakasabit sa ledge ng bintana, at siya'y tila nakaharap sa dingding sa kanan. Ang ginawa ko rito'y take-off ko sa Ribbon na meron ding patterns sa papel. Nagustuhan ko ang mekanikal na imprint, subalit nag-isip ako ng isang paraang makapagbibigay ng laban sa nangyari nang pagka-mekanikal lamang. Tapos nakita ko itong litrato ng iyong Mama na nakasuot ng shirt na may I Ching hexagram sa harap, at inisip kong ito ang puno-ng-kontekstong stripes na hinahanap ko.
Tapos, dahil sa maaaring namasid mong mala-anghel na hitsura ng Mama mo sa litratong ito, naisip kong palambutin ang lahat hindi lang sa tone nito (magagawa na 'to ng graphite) kundi pati rin sa texture at kulay. Kaya walang ibang choice kundi pastels, at hindi nga ba't pastel paper itong pinag-printan ko ng line photo na ito?
Ang resulta? Isang mala-Picasso (di pa Cubist na Picasso) at mala-Chagall ding piyesa na may pasaring sa ating pagka-taga-Silangan. Lahat ng ito'y tila milagrong kinalabasan ng simple ko lamang layuning labanan ang "impersonal" na mga marka ng printer roller ng mga "personal" na haplos ng malambot na pastel chalks.Papa

Hello again, Miguel, I only just now got to sit down to write about this piece I finished last week. I am writing a screenplay, you see, the reason why I can't spend more time on my art pieces.
Anyway, this is a continuation of my experiments with the line photograph. This one, of your Mama in the early '90s in front of a window and beside two umbrellas hanging from the window's ledge and facing aslant a wall, is a take-off from Ribbon with the latter's paper stripes. I got enamored with the mechanical imprint but thought of a way by which I could provide a sort of counter against it. Then I saw this photograph of your Mama with a shirt bearing an I Ching hexagram and I thought this was the context-ridden stripes I was looking for.
Then, given the angelic look on your Mama's face in that photo, I thought I'd soften the whole thing not just tone-wise (graphite would do it) but also texture- and color-wise. So there was no better choice than pastels, as anyway this was pastel paper I printed the line photo on.
The result? A Picasso-esque (pre-Cubist Picasso) cum Chagallian piece with Oriental allusions. All a miraculous outcome of a simple objective of letting the "impersonal" printer roller's marks fight with the soft pastel chalks' "personal" caresses.Papa
