Hemingway's La Mar (or; Port/Portal)

Mahal kong Cel. Sana'y may pera na ako ngayon at nang maipa-frame ko na itong isa ko pang pastel na gawa (isang maliit na trabaho) na natapos ko rin nung late May (o early June ba yun?). Sa una tinawag ko itong "Night Swimming", dahil portreyt 'to ng dalawang babae, ang isa sa kanila ina na may kargang bata at bag pang-bata, at naka-pose sila sa harap ng isang malaking portal o arko na may naiilawan ng buwan na baybayin sa likod nito. Ang portal o arko sa totoo'y galing sa Simbahan ng Barasoain sa Malolos, ngunit ginawa ko itong isang misteryoso o surreyalistang arko katabi ng isang baybayin. Ang nanay dito'y makikilala mo bilang ikaw (o ikaw ang modelo, dahil nga drinowing ko ito mula sa bahagi ng isang litrato, isang bahaging naroon ka, si Gabo karga ng iyong mga bisig, ang kapatid kong si Adette sa likod mo).
Naakit ako ng bahagi ng litratong iyon sa dalawang dahilan. Una, dahil sa pagkaitim ng buma-background sa ina sa litrato ay maaari na muli akong magsabi ng mga kailangan kong sabihin tungkol sa itim na buhok ng ating mga ina, isang pagkaitim na nag-be-blend doon sa itim sa likod ng archway. Ganun din sa buhok ng baby, ang itim na buhok ni Gabo.
Ang isa pang dahilan ay ito: dahil ito'y isang bahagi ng litrato, ang mag-zoom in ay magreresulta sa isang Impressionist na effect na gusto ko. Samakatuwid ito'y naging isang portreyt hindi ninyo ni Gabo at ni Adette sa harap ng isang portal ng isang dagat na nasa background nito. Hindi. Ito ngayo'y isa nang portreyt ng kahit na sinong gayunding tila-turistang trio.
Ah, isa pa. Parang nagustuhan ko rin ang mala-Birheng Mariya na effect na gawa ng arko sa inang nasa gitna nito, isang effect na nakabuo ng isang mala-grotto na komposisyon, na bahagyang sinira lamang ng presensya ng isa pang pigura (si Adette) palabas ng "kuweba" ng grotto. At isa pa, nakikita mo ba ang isang mala-Moses na effect na may pagpapaalala ng isang progression na nagmumula Nile patungong palasyo? Ngunit ang kulay ng baby bag na nakasabit sa ina, at ang kulay na ginamit ko para sa arko ay bumabagay sa bughaw ng ina, na nagbibigay-pugay marahil sa opisyal na assignation ng light cobalt o cerulean blue na kulay sa Birheng Mariya. Kaya, marahil ito'y mas magagamit bilang piyesang tumutukoy sa isang Katolikong konteksto.
Kaya maaari ko na bang tawagin ang peynting kong ito ng "Birhen"? Mmm, hindi. Huwag. Iyo'y masyadong ambisyoso, malabo ang larawan sa ganung direksyon. "Port / Portal" ay mas ayos, o di kaya "Hemingway's La Mar," na may pagtukoy sa simile ni Hemingway ng babae at ng dagat at ng buwan sa Ang Matandang Lalaki at ang Dagat. Sa ganitong pamagat, ang ating larawan ay magiging tungkol sa baybayin bilang simbolo ng isang uri ng pagdating, sa kadiliman ng kamatayan sa di-masukat na karagatan at gabi sa likod ng lahat, at sa kababaihan at mga sanggol sa hinaharap na buhay.Jojo

Dear Cel. I wish I had the money now to be able to frame this other pastel work (very small one) that I also finished late May (or was it early June?). Initially I called it "Night Swimming", because it's a portrait of a mother and another woman with a baby and a bag posing in front of a large portal or arch behind which is a moonlit bay. The portal or arch is actually that of Malolos' Barasoain Church, but I turned it into a mysterious or surrealist arch right beside a beach. The mother is you (or you're the model, I painted this from a fragment of a photo, that fragment showing you, Gabo in your arms, my sister Adette behind you).
I was attracted to the fragment for two reasons. Because of the blackness in the photo backgrounding the mother, I'd once again be able to say what I need to say about our mothers' black hair, a blackness that melds into the blackness beyond the archway. Same with the baby's hair, Gabo's black hair.
The other reason was this: because this was a photo fragment, zooming in resulted in an Impressionist effect that I liked. Therefore this became not a portrait of you and Gabo and Adette in front of a portal to a sea in the background. This is now just a portrait of any like tourist trio.
Oh, one other thing. I kind of liked the Virgin Mary effect the arch had on the mother in the center, creating a grotto-like composition, shattered only by another figure's presence (Adette's) coming out of that grotto "cave". Also, can you see a Moses-like effect with a recall of a Nile-to-the-palace progression? But the color of the baby bag hanging from the mother's shoulder, and the color that I used for the arch to complement the mother's blue, emulates the official assignation of the light cobalt or cerulean blue color on the Virgin Mary. Thus perhaps this is more useful as a piece referencing the Catholic context.
So now may I call this painting "Birhen"? Nah, that would be too ambitious, the picture being vague towards that. "Port / Portal" is more like it, or "Hemingway's La Mar," referencing Hemingway's simile involving woman and sea and moon in The Old Man and the Sea. With this final title, our piece now points to a kind of arrival, to the darkness of death and the limitless sea and night behind, and to women and babies at the front of future of life.Jojo
