Mahal na Miguel. Noong Mayo nagdesisyon akong mag-drowing/peynting muli, gumawa na muli ng art. O iyon ba'y noong Abril? Subalit matapos akong gumawa ng mga konseptuwal na trabaho noong nagdaang mga taon na di man lang naghatid sa'kin sa unang hakbang paakyat ng mga galerya para sa merkado ng Maynila, nagdesisyon din akong ako'y nababagot na sa pagmasid sa -- at pagbasa ng -- mga bagay-bagay ng tila-ngayo'y pretensyoso na (sa akin) na modernismo at post-modernismo. Oo nga't gusto ko pa ring i-explore ang mga dating intelektuwal na usapin, subalit sa loob na ng masasabi ng marami na mga tradisyonal na modang mula pa sa ika-19 na siglo. Subalit gusto kong mag-concentrate sa isa sa mga tradisyonal na modang ito, viz., ang portraiture. Na-inspire ako ng mga portraits ni Juan Luna na natunghayan na muli ng aking mga mata sa isang Lopez Museum na katalogo na narito sa bahay.
Ano ang nakita ko sa modang portreyt, iyong itatanong. At isasagot ko sa iyo na nakita ko ang isang nasyonalistang potensyal, dahil siguradong di ko matatakasan ang mga Filipinong subjects na may itim na buhok. :-) Ang challenge ay nasa paghanap ng mga bagong values dito, oo nga't ito'y isang modernistang paghahanap.Ang iyong Papa
Mahal kong Gabo. Katatapos ko lang mag-drowing ng isang portreyt ng iyong Mama na may dekada-'80 na istilo ng buhok. Siya'y naka-smile, sa likod niya ang dagat. Ang bughaw na langit ay nalulunod ng kanyang itim na buhok, kaya di rin ako magdadalawang-isip pamagatan itong "Babaeng May Itim na Buhok (Lady with Black Hair)". Katabi ng itim na ito, ang madilim na kulay purple ng kanyang blouse ang bumubuo ng isang tila classical na effect, subalit mas naiisip ko si Giotto kaysa kay Raphael dahil sa maliwanag na bakgrawnd. Inisip kong ang coloration nito'y tila nagpapaalala sa akin ng ating Hispanic na nakaraan, ngunit set sa reyalidad ng ating tropikal na palibot.
Ang maganda sa pag-pe-paint mula sa isang potograpiya imbis na mula sa isang nakaupong modelo ay puwede mo ring ipinta hindi lang ang subject kundi pati ang camera lens effect kasama ang mga distortions nito. (Inisip ko ring pamagatan ito ng "Billboard"). Puwede mong gaya-gayahin ang laro ng lens sa subject. Ito pa lang ay may pag-komento na -- pabor man o hindi -- sa tinatawag na "portraiture services" na ino-offer sa mga corridor ng mga mall, mga serbisyong nakasalalay sa mga potograpiyang iniiwan ng mga kostumer nito.
Maaari mong sabihing ito ang aking hamak na Mona Lisang pastel, ngunit di ako magpapamagat sa gayung direksyon sa dahilang iiwasan ko ang masalimuot na mga layers ng konteksto.
Kaya ngayon, kung babalik tayo do'n sa classical European na dilim na dulot ng buhok at blouse na kombinasyong kulay na kumu-contrast sa naka-background na mga kulay ng seascape, sasabihin mo bang nakatamo ako ng Iberian colors sa kabuuan? At kung ang mga peynting ay mga gamit ng mga interior designers ngayong araw, masasabi ba nating sa drowing kong ito ako'y nag-ka-clamor ng mga bagay tulad ng pelusang kurtinang kulay purple sa ibabaw ng emerald green na mga dingding o ni-lacquer na wooden panels? Pero teka, na pinasya kong i-frame ito ng isang puting frame na may dirty-white na matting, iyo'y tumutukoy na ng mga dingding na mas Amerikano kaysa hindi. Naroon ang problema para sa isang interior designer, at yun ay dahil lamang sa gusto kong palaparin pa ang puti ng papel sa gilid ng drowing.Papa
Mahal kong Cecile. Alam kong di mo gusto ang iyong posture sa portreyt, ngunit kung wala iyon mawawalan na ng espasyo o puwang na matitira para sa dagat upang ito'y sapat na mapagmasdan sa komposisyong ito na masasabi ko pa ring appropriate sa kanyang pagiging vertical. :-) Dahil sa "posture" na iyon, ang nagmamasid ay magsisimulang mag-imagine kuing nasaan ang iyong mga kamay. Giniginaw ka kaya? Itong lahat ay maliban pa sa lens-distortion emulation na, sabi pa ng iyong reklamo, nagpaliit yata sa iyong katawan.

Dear Miguel. By May I already made a decision to draw/paint again, make art again. Was it actually April when I thought about it? But after making conceptual works through the years that didn't get me to the first step of getting a gallery booking for the Manila art market, I've decided too I've become bored with seeing and reading the now-seeming pretentiousness (to me now) of modernism and postmodernist products and only now wish to explore those same intellectual concerns within what may appear as 19th-century traditional modes. But I'd want to concentrate on one of these traditional modes, viz., portraiture. I was rather inspired by the portraits of Juan Luna that I happened on again in that Lopez Museum catalogue in the house here.
What do I see in the portrait mode, you ask. Well, I see a nationalist potential, for to be sure I'd have Filipino subjects with black hair. :-) The challenge would be to look for new values in it, which admittedly would be to be modernist.Your Papa
Dear Gabo. I just finished drawing a portrait of your Mama wearing a 1980s hair. She's smiling, smirking, the sea behind her. Against the blue sky her black hair looms large, and I wouldn't mind also titling this "Babaeng May Itim na Buhok (Lady with Black Hair)". With that black, the dark purple color of her blouse creates a somewhat classical effect, but I'm thinking Giotto more than Raphael because of the light background. I thought the coloration is reminiscent of our Hispanic past, but set in the reality of this our tropical outdoors.
The nice thing about painting from a photograph instead of from a sitting model is you can also paint not just the subject but also the camera lens effect with its distortions. (I actually considered also titling this "Billboard"). You can parody the lens' play on the subject, going beyond the photograph -- and this could even be inadvertent. This alone comments vastly -- favorably or otherwise -- on the so-called "portraiture services" offered in mall corridors, services that rely on photographs left by customers.
You could say this is my modest pastel Mona Lisa, but I won't title this in that direction to avoid complicated contextualities.
Now, going back to the classical European darkness evoked by the hair and the blouse color combine contrasting with the backgrounding seascape colors, would you say I've actually achieved Iberian colors on the whole? And if paintings are material for interior designers today, then would I have with this work again clamored for such things as velvety dark purple curtains over emerald green walls or lacquered wooden panels? But yet, that I decided to frame this with a white frame and dirty-white matting, that already points to walls more American than anything. There's a problem for an interior designer, and all because I wanted to extend the white of the paper at the drawing's edges.Papa
Dear Cecile. I know you don't like your posture in the portrait, but without it there would be no space left for the sea to be amply glimpsed in this appropriately vertical composition. :-) With it, the spectator will begin to imagine where your hands are. Are you cold? This is all apart from the lens-distortion emulation which, as you complained, made your body small.
