In the year 2089, the country is ruled over by huge machines run by alien beings called Tripods. These machines have brainwashed mankind and made them docile and receptive to the Tripods bidding, by means of a capping process performed when a citizen reaches fourteen years of age. The country has returned to an almost Victorian way of life, with things going pleasantly serene day after day. Will Parker and his cousin however, are not content and do not want to life life as a capped, brainless zombie spouting off about how good the Tripods are. After an encounter with a Vagrant (an uncapped, shunned member of society) called Ozimandias, th two boys set off on a mission to find the mythical White Mountains somewhere in France where a resistance force is being mounted. Along the way they meet Beanpole, a tall bespectacled French boy and he tags along, whilst all the while the three boys attempt to evade The Black Soldiers who are in hot pursuit, as are the mechanical Tripods. This 2 disc set includes all 13 episodes from series one, and for those that remember it, it is a brilliant slice of nostalgia. Those not so familiar may feel its a bit cheap and old, but whatever your bias its still worth a look. Originally screened on Saturday teatimes in 1984, this serial features a cast of thousands, and some pretty special effects for the mid 1980s. The front cover does seem a bit over the top, seeing as there are not that many explosions, so don't expect a War Of The Worlds style scenario. In fact, using those Victorian sets and costumes probably saved the BBC wardrobe department some valuable cash!
EXTRA FEATURES
None at all, whatsoever, zilch. Still, it is relatively inexpensive and therefore worth a go.
