TEIGNMOUTH PHOTOGRAPHS
Here are some of the places in Teignmouth that have inspired me to write songs. There's a brief explanation of why next to each photo.
This is the sea wall in Teignmouth, with the yacht club building visible on the left. This was the inspiration for the song "Considering Suicide" - to the right of the pavement there is a large drop, down to the beach below. I doubt you'd be able to kill yourself jumping off it, but you'd certainly be in a lot of trouble if it was high tide and there was a rough sea. This photo was obviously taken on a nice day, although those dark clouds look none too inviting, I'm sure you'll agree.
This is the Community College astroturf pitch, that was mentioned in the song "Easterfields". Sorry it's a bit of a bleak one, it wasn't the sunniest of days when I took this photo, but you can at least make out the astroturf surface. All you have to do now is imagine lots of fit girls running round playing hockey in their short skirts, all hot and sweaty...ahem. Best not say that or my girlfriend will hit me.The house that the song was named after is just up to the left, but I didn't photograph it in case I incurred the owner's wrath by not asking their permission.
Here we have Teignmouth cemetery, deserted as per usual. This was kind of an influence on the song called Coffins, which was about being buried alive or something. It's quite a nice cemetery, although the grass is quite long. In the middle where that white mass of houses are, my house is somewhere in there.
This road is Exeter Road (AKA Exeter Hill). On the left is the high school, and on the right is...a lamp post. Hmm. Anyway, this is the influence for 'Constant Uphill', a song that is commonly misunderstood to be about Teignmouth because of the line 'trapped in this constant uphill town', which is about this hill. It's a real bitch to walk up from the town, mind you i would say that because I'm really unfit, but the town is nice. East is east, west is west but home is best I guess. Well shoot me down in flames, there's my finger up the top left! Damn!
The Hazeldown School playing fields. This is a place very reminiscent of my childhood - many a happy day in the summer was spent playing up here. This was taken on a rainy Sunday morning about 8am, and I got dew all over my feet plus there was this dodgy man stood over by a fence off to the left, and he kept looking at me - he really scared me he did. Still, I got my photo. I don't know what all that funny stuff is down the bottom of the photo, seems to have gone a bit Pete Tong. Influence for the song 'Six Years Between Friends'.
Now I can't actually remember what song this place influenced, but it was where I saw a girl I really liked walking along holding hands with this other guy I knew, and I realised I had no chance with her then. This is New Road in Teignmouth, and going upwards is Exeter Road which you saw earlier, and New Road runs off to the right. I think the song written about this place might have been 'Nothing Helps You'.
