| One of the roles which turned Anthony Hopkins into a household name, and, although eleven years old now, is still regarded as many as the definitive serial killer film. The story (if you dont know) follows Special Agent Clarice Starling, a rookie in the FBI, and her investigation into the deaths and subsequent skinning by a murderer known only as Buffalo Bill. Helping her solve the mystery, but only in exchange for secrets and truths about her own life, is Hannibal The Cannibal Lecter, a jailed former psychiatrist. Lecter provides obscure clues and insights into Buffalo Bill, while a race against the clock ensues before Bill kills his next victim, the daughter of a respected senator. This film turns in some impressive performances, not least from Hopkins, who only spends around 25% of the film on screen. However, his presence is powerful nonetheless. Foster also turns in a splendid performance as the inexperienced Starling, which of course set the stage for Julianne Moore in last years sequel Hannibal. Overall a mesmerising piece of film making that never bores or slows down, keeping the suspense levels high up until the final confrontation between Starling and Buffalo Bill. |
| EXTRA FEATURES For a film over a decade old, there is quite a lot of material here. Whether or not it constitutes a second disc is debatable, but rather than sacrifice picture quality from cramming everything onto one disc, this was probably for the best. There is an hour long documentary on the making of the film, including old and new interviews with the cast and crew, but curiously not with director Demme or actress Foster. In addition to this are over twenty deleted scenes of varying length, as well as a featurette from 1991. Also included are a short out takes reel, a superb answer phone message recorded by Anthony Hopkins (in character)! Stills galleries, TV spots and trailers make up the rest of this package, which does justice to the film it supports. |
