Criticised at times for it's shocking murder scenes, this cult classic from Oliver Stone set out to prove what might happen if a pair of mass murdering serial killers were adored by the media who were hungry for ratings, and in turn became loved by the same public who they were killing! Mickey and Mallory Knox, lovers after killing Mallory's child abusing father and timid mother, go on the run, plundering and killing at will. On their tails is supercop Jack Scagnetti (those eagle eyed film fans may care to know that this character shares the surname of a character from Quentin Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs' - after all, Tarantino came up with the original story) who eventually gets what he wants and has them slammed up after a shootout at a drugs store.
One year later and the murderous duo are tired of prison life, and, as they are being interviewed by media mogul and ratings slave Wayne Gale for his show "American Maniacs", they seize their chance to escape.
Packed full of great performances, Harrelson especially as the humourous cold blooded killer and Robert Downey Jnr as the strange accented Wayne Gale (think Australian Cockney!). This film definately smacks of Tarantino, although the inventive use of stock footage, black and white, colour and animation means this is a real sensual overload, though never quite goes over the top. Although explicit with it's violence, it does seem rather samey when compared with increasingly lax viewer attitudes to violence. Some of the more harrowing moments though, the gunshot through Downey Jnr's hand and Tommy Lee Jones' head on a spike, have been removed. This is still a great cult film though, and one for Stone and Tarantino fans alike.
EXTRA FEATURES
Although the box set is now no longer available (except overpriced from some internet auction!) you still get a talkative commentary from Stone, a documentary on the making of the film, some good deleted scenes with Stone introductions (a particularly lengthy and good scene is that one in the courtroom), an alternative ending which, unlike many included on today's discs, actually adds quite a nice twist to the movie by including a lesser used character and finally some cool animated menus. A good package overall, keeping many of the extras from the USA region 1 release.
