The final film in Smith's New Jersey trilogy that started in 1994 with "Clerks" and featured "Mallrats" (1995), "Chasing Amy" (1997), "Dogma" (1999) and finally this movie, which features Smith's dope pedelling scoundrels Jay and Silent Bob in main roles. The story is simple - Jay and Bob are owed money due to likeness rights from a comic based on them called "Bluntman and Chronic", which is to be made into a film. The only thing is, the loveable pair are angry at comments made on the internet about their good names, and so set off to stop the film being made. Along the way they get sidetracked by a gang of beautiful diamond thieves, who trick the pair into stealing a monkey as a diversionary tactic, which incurs the wrath of a Wildlife Officer who wants the monkey back. Layered with classic Smith dialogue and the love/hate relationship between Jay and Bob, this is a great road trip movie. While some of the jokes don't really work, fans of Smith's work are bound to love it. The humour tends to lie along the same kind of lines as films like "American Pie" or "Road Trip", though still retains a personal brand of humour. This one should appeal to all, and whilst not being the best in the Kevin Smith portfolio, is still a winner.
EXTRA FEATURES
Spread over two discs like the region one release of "Dogma", this carries a wealth of extra material. Probably of greatest interest is the audio commentary by Smith, Mewes and producer Scott Mosier, and the hour plus of deleted scenes - over an hour is probably misleading, due to the introductions by Smith and guests on why the scenes were cut. These bump up the viewing time but are entertaining all the same. You also get a gag reel featuring blunders and out takes, the 'secret stash' section with intros, which are basically spoof out takes taken from fooling around on set. TV spots, trailers, still galleries and storyboards are also included, as well as a made for TV documentary with interviews, two music videos, a behind the scenes feature and a guide to Morris Day and The Time, who make a cameo at the end of the movie. In terms of DVD-ROM content, there is an open mic commentary for you to record your own commentary to selected scenes, the complete screenplay (available to watch alongside the film) and a weblink - all in all, everything you need on two discs. It's just a shame this lot will probably not be transfered to the R2 release....
