Romeo and Juliet

The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is all about love. The characters in the book demonstrate many different kinds of love.  Three types of love that they show are parental love between a parent and their daughter or son, love between a man and a woman, and unrequited love when one person loves the other but the feeling is not mutual or will never be fulfilled.

The love between a parent and his or her child is a very strong kind of love with a bond that would be hard to break. Lord and Lady Capulet love their daughter Juliet more than anything in the world, but they sometimes don’t express it in such an obvious way. They only want the best for Juliet, and they want her to be happy, but sometimes they don’t act like it. This is expressed when Lord Capulet says to Paris, “And to soon marred are those so early made.  Earth hath swallowed all my hopes but she, she’s the hopeful lady of my earth.” They do things such as try and marry her to Paris, and move the wedding forward a day in order to make her happy. Everything they do is for their love of her, but sometimes it doesn’t turn out as they planned. Juliet’s nurse has a more maternal bond with her than her own mother does. The Nurse has taken care of Juliet and raised her from her birth, so they have a very strong bond. The Nurse and Juliet talk about things that Juliet and her mother could never talk about, and they understand each other very well, the bond between the Nurse and Juliet is eventually broken for true love between Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet are the prime expression of true love between a man and a woman. They deeply love each other, more than anyone can really imagine.  This love is expressed when Juliet says before killing her self because of Romeo’s death, “Then I’ll be brief. O, happy dagger, this is thy sheath.  There rust, and let me die.”  The bond between them is so tight that almost nothing can brake it, not even death. Their love is one of the most pure forms of love that there is.  No one forced them to love each other, they don’t love each other because they are related, and they almost flawlessly feel for each other. Their love is pure because they found it themselves and they went through many obstacles to keep their love and defied many rules to be with each other. The love also deeply changes them. They are so afflicted by love that they start to become more and more irrational in their decisions and more emotional in every aspect of life. The love between Romeo and Juliet was one of the most powerful and influential shades of love known to human kind.

There is one kind of love expressed in the play Romeo and Juliet that is a very empty form. The unrequited love that is felt by some of the characters such as Romeo to Rosaline, and Paris to Juliet, is a kind of love that can not be ignored but cannot be tucked away. It is a sad kind of love because it cannot be fulfilled for the person feeling it. They will never have that special bond between their love that others may have with their one and only. They will live a life of emptiness unless their feelings change, because they will never have that place inside of them filled by the person that they love.

The story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is one of love and passion between characters. The love expressed in the story comes in many forms that have their own effect in the play. Three shapes of love illustrated in the story are the love between a parent and their son or daughter, the love between a man and a woman, and the unrequited love that will never be fulfilled that is felt only by one person.
