What Kind of Writer I Am

To me, writing is a true expression of what someone is really thinking.  I like to write because of this.  Writing is not like math or science where all of the facts are laid out and you either abide by the rules or you fail.  Even if you are not writing about a creative subject you can still be a creative writer.  A simple twist of words can make all the difference.  I have seen interesting writings about boring subjects, and visa versa.  Since writing is a pure expression of someone’s mind, it can really tell you alloy about that person.  Although I like writing, I do have my strengths and weaknesses just as anyone else does.

My teachers and others who read my work have usually said that I am a good writer.  My biggest strength in this area is that I actually like to do it.  If there weren’t more things to do in life, I have to admit that I would spend a lot of my free time writing.  Sometimes it feels like it comes pretty naturally, like I don’t have to think about it, it just flows out.  When I get assigned research papers or essays, I don’t mind because that is what I like to do anyway.  I don’t know why I like to write, but I think it is partially because it is one of the few things that I can stay focused on long enough to get into a groove.  Sometimes writing is like an escape from everything.  When I write, it isn’t a chore that needs to be done, so I can write freely which I feel is my biggest strength.

Even though I like to write, that doesn’t mean that I am even close to being a perfect writer.  One thing that I hear a lot from people who read my writing is that the ideas and structure are good, but I am a terrible speller and not too great at grammar either.  Unless I type my writing I have so many spelling errors it is ridiculous.  When I write freehand I misspell so many words, sometimes without even realizing it.  Since spelling isn’t as emphasized as it used to be in school, and we don’t practice it as much because we type everything, all my spelling skills have been wasted away.  Sometimes I even misspell words like person, which up until a few years ago; I used to put an e at the end, making it persone.  This is an area that I hope to improve on in this class, and luckily my weaknesses are easy to correct with practice.

I took expository writing because I like to write.  I also took this class because I hope to become a better writer for the future and be able to express myself more easily through writing.  With college essays, job applications, and other areas where writing is necessary, I know I will be thankful in the future.  Writing is the only subject that I am one-hundred percent sure that I will always use no matter what, so I better be good at it.  I hope to become a better writer by the end of this course.
