| As I have mentioned previously, taking your bird to an dog & cat vet, instead of an avian vet, could mean the difference in life & death in an emergency situation. I have read that vets don't get a lot of avian instruction in school. Veterinarians that have specialized in birds, usually do so because they are bird lovers. There are very few Avian Certified Vets in the country, but there are many vets who treat birds and stay current on avian veterinary medicine through the Association of Avian Veterinarians. The first link below is where you can find an avian vet in your area that is a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians. The second link is to an article that lists all the avian certified vets in the US and some abroad. Most likely, there will not be an avian certified vet in your area, but the AAV vets are just fine for treatment of your pet. I cannot imagine that you would need to seek out a certified avian vet unless your bird had some mystery illness that could not be diagnosed locally. Of course word of mouth, from other experienced bird owners is a good method of selecting an avian vet. One more reason for joining your local bird club. |
