| Shuby's story is a horrifying example of the darker side of human beings. I don't know all the details, but know the basics. Shuby was owned by a monster that walked around like a human being. For some unfathomable reason, either Shuby was too loud, or bit someone, or threw his food or toys on the floor (all typical parrot behavior) or maybe there was no reason at all except he was basically defenseless against a much larger creature, Shuby's owner tried to beat him to death. Thankfully, I suppose even monsters can have some feelings of remorse, or maybe it was a family member, but someone abandoned Shuby in a shoebox at a pet store. That is how he got his name. Then an angel of mercy took him to a veterinarian, who mended poor Shuby as best he could. Shuby recovered, but has some amount of brain damage and is crippled in one leg and one wing. The person who rescued him, could not handle him because for some reason , even though a man beat him, he doesn't seem to like women, or maybe the lady just didn't have enough experience with large parrots, but in any event, she relinquished Shuby to our bird club rescue. Because Shuby had been through so much already, our club president decided we would keep him as a mascot to eliminate any chance of him ever being mistreated again. He lives with a member of our club who has tons of bird experience and loves Shuby to pieces. In spite of Shuby's experience, he is a happy, funny bird who delights in nothing as much as showing off for a bunch of silly humans, as you can see in the photo on the right at our club picnic. He danced and talked for hours as long as he had an audience. It never ceases to amaze me that animals, who are supposed to be so much more lowly evolved than we humans, have such capacity for joy and love. |
